Is that a normal, albino, whitesided and a leucy? I always heard that there was never really a true leucistic black rat and that they were bred with leucy texas rats and then bred back. Is that true, maybe you can shed some light.

The whitesided rats are my favorite. I have always wanted a pair.

Yep!
A lot of people claim both sides. I ahve heard people say they saw the original wild caught male leucy black rat and others say it was too close to the range of Texas Rats to be sure it was a black. All I know is I can tell a difference in head shape in Texas Leucy's and Black Rat Leucy's. And a slight difference in temperament.

I remember back in the day when lucies, what I believe were Texas rats, very often had "bug eyes". Which was considered a genetic defect at the time. They didnt all have bug eyes. I actually found a pair with normal eyes. But many had some degree of bug. Some not so bad, some outrageous.

Is this still around or has it been out-crossed out? Or is it still prevelant among lecu rats? Do you think its tied to the mutation kinda like carmels balls have a tendency to kink and some spiders spin? Or am I just crazy?

I think it's tied to inbreeding and the leucy gene. Yes it is still out there and I have seen some that weird me out. I dont do bug eyes..... Anyway, I have found breeding leucy to leucy causes more of the bug eyes but not always. As long as you outcross the bug eyes stay away.

Those are awesome, can't have them here but first wild snake I ever got a nasty bite from was a black rat around 9 or 10...mean as hell 5 footer but back then I swore it was 30 foot.

My understanding is that the original wild-caught male Leucistic Texas Rat that started the morph was bug-eyed. The gene is present throughout the bloodline. A breeding between two normal-eyed Leucistics will still produce some offspring with bug eyes. You will also occasionally see some ruby eyed Leucistics in the mix.

That's a nice looking collection of rat snakes there!!

Years ago I kept a pair of white sided obsoleta and loved them. They are awesome snakes. Recently I've seen some pics of 'lemon' black rat snakes. Those have really captured my interest.

The lemons and calicos are pretty awesome. A little too pricey for me right now but they are some stunning animals!
