View Full Version : Flavi x argus crosses
Varanus99 11-07-2008, 09:49 PM Im not a huge fan of crosses but I was checking out these little fellas and they look pretty nice:

I love argus but Im not really prepared for something that big at the moment. Plus I would only get a trio and three adult argus would need a massive cage. Flavis are awesome but pretty rare and very $$$. So we have these guys. They stay pretty small and they tripod!
Very tempting...
What??? No pics?
I've heard they have a decent temprament

Varanus99 11-07-2008, 10:01 PM The ad has pics!
Yeah I heard the same. Argus are good monitors but they are maniacs. Not really mean but extremely food aggressive and just plain crazy. The flavi blood seems to take a little of that edge off without losing all of the 'tude that makes them cool.
JChandler 11-07-2008, 10:13 PM Got to sign in to view the pics...cool looking little ones.
Varanus99 11-07-2008, 10:24 PM Ooops didnt realize.
Credit goes to Repti-racks for producing the animals. Hope they dont mind me showing the pic:

Steven_Kelley 11-12-2008, 01:04 PM Sweet lookin animal!
Thanks for sharing!
Varanus99 11-12-2008, 06:34 PM They are sweet.
I really, really want them.
I promised myself no more animals for a little while. Plus Im on Double Secret Snake Probabtion from the girlfriend.
But I really want them. I really, really, really do.
I mean really. :wamma:
jknudson 11-12-2008, 06:37 PM You gotta love a monitor that tripods! I love argus, but they get too damn big!
But...they're smaller you say?
Varanus99 11-12-2008, 07:03 PM Pure flavis are smaller than argus. So when you cross them you usually get an animal somewhere in the middle. Depending on how much flavi you got in there.
If I read correctly these guys are the result of a pure flavi breeding with a flavi/argus. So you only got 25% argus in there. Which should result in a smaller animal, not quite as insane as a pure argus but maybe still a little 'tude in there.
And yeah they tripod! Gotta love it. Although the argus are the kings of the tripod.
Varanus99 11-30-2008, 08:55 AM Arrghhhhh I couldnt stand it.
I swore no new additions until after the holidays. I have a blown up boiler that has to be replaced, havent done a lick of Xmas shopping yet, I redid my kitchen recently and still have to put the new floor in...
My lizard rooms are a little crowded, I have a bunch of leopard geckos I need to find homes for, I wanted to build something more space efficient for the skinks but still give them plenty of room...
BUT I COULDNT TAKE NOT HAVING THSE GUYS!!!
Just sent Repti-racks and email. They only have 2 left. Shucks. I like to buy groups of 3 I never buy pairs. Much better chance of a male/female when you buy three. But they only have 2 and I am trying to snag them.
Screw it. Ill eat Ramen noodles and make a fire for heat.
LMAO. Hope you get those two. Ramen isn't so bad...
Ya broke yer Double Secret Snake Probabtion!!?!??? Whoooooo boy are YOU in trouble!! Hope the probation officer is a kind one.:lmao:
All that being said, good luck getting a male and a female.
Quig
I almost forgot, eatin' raman noodles git old quick and so does haulin' fire wood. :lmao::lmao:

Just melt some lead and get one of those old fashion gloves and seal the crack...worry about the boiler later...
Ramen noodles are horrible, eat rats instead!
Good luck on getting them V.

LOL, good point Kare. I stand corrected.
Varanus99 11-30-2008, 11:35 AM Kare is right. I'm not technically breaking probation. Good catch there Kare glad to see you're paying attention :yourock:
Im still in deep poo though. Im gonna have to sneak them in and pretend they were always here.
"Those guys? Ive always had them. Those are Varanus ipsofacto ramalamadingdong. Yeah, its an Australian species. You just didnt notice them, thats all. Why are they standing up? Ummm...I trained them to do that. Watch...UP BOYS! See? Good lizards"
Im hoping for a male and female, too. Cross your fingers. Ive been lucky so far. Havent bought a trio yet only to discover I have a mens locker room or a beauty salon.
JC, the boiler is already full of stop leak. Im on the case. Just hoping she holds a little while longer, LOL!
bassett524 11-30-2008, 11:52 AM very cool looking monitor. I think I've had this conversation with Jeremy before but I forget the answer. Is the flavi just a reclassification of V gouldii or are they a separate species?
Varanus99 11-30-2008, 12:05 PM Ok, this is a little tricky lemme see if I can do this.
Varanus gouldii was first ued to describe a whole bunch of monitors. The desert race of this group known commonly as the sand monitor or sand goanna was later classified as a seperate species V.gouldii flavirufus.
Then everything gets a little messy as the scientists butt heads. They began to look for minor differences in scalation, spots and tail tips. Also, the three guys doing most of this naming (Grey, Mertens and Storr) didnt always agree or discover the animals at the same time. They sometimes tripped over each other.
Anyway, the desert species was later described as V. flavirufus flavirufus. But in some of the old literature you may find it as V.gouldii flavirufus.
So yes they are a reclassification of the gouldii complex. But not the only one.
Oh BTW whatever they are I got'em and they are coming at the end of the week. Whoooo!

I HAD to! You threatened me! Try to steal my lizards out from under me, will ya? Who you think you're playing with over here some RUBE??
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
Thank you for needed push. :yessir:
Varanus99 11-30-2008, 12:57 PM This just in. Got a trio!
I BEGGED for a trio and they had another guy who came out a little smaller than the rest. A runt if you will. They were holding him back since he wasnt perfect. Very honest folks over there. They didnt even have him listed for sale. That scores big points with me. BUT..since I groveled so nicely they told me about him and offered him to me at a discounted price since he needs some special care.
I have experience with runts and bringing lizards back from the brink. Ive had monitors hatch out small and weak before. They just need some TLC usually. The female ackie that laid the last clutch started out a mess. She couldnt even climb the Retes Stack (All hail). Now she's a trooper and dropped 3 clutches this year. She is still smaller than the other adult females and doesnt shed well. She needs frequent baths. So she may not be 100% but I dont mind giving her a little extra attention. She's a solid animal.
So I got my trio. Thing #1, Thing #2 and Shorty.
tokaysunlimited 11-30-2008, 01:20 PM hahaha No kidding huh?
Awsome man!!!Now you need to get rid of 2 ackies to make room!

I really wanted to keep most or all of these guys but Im gonna have to let some go. I got the flavi/argus coming and Im waiting on some red ackies. And I got a Kimberly hopefully laying eggs as we speak.
Dont worry TK if I let any go you're top of the list. Got one other BLBCer who's inerested in a couple and you. Everybody else can go scratch.
Plus with BLBCers I know they're going to good homes. As Ive said before Im not a business. I dont have 100s of animals. So I do consider where they are going. Unless of course they get eaten by your scorpions or assasin bugs!
Gotta take care of the Bush League first. Diehard.
Glad you are getting that trio after all. Look forward to seeing some arrival pics of Thing #1, Thing #2, and Shorty.

Thank you! I havent done any Xmas shopping except for myself! Greedy little stinker aint I?
bassett524 12-01-2008, 12:55 AM congrats on the purchase. I've wanted those guys ever since I saw how much they actually tripod. Just one of the coolest behaviors I've ever seen in monitors.
luciddream 12-01-2008, 02:25 PM Congrats. You'll have to post some pics the moment they come in.
Don't worry about breaking the snake probation. I do it all the time. In fact, since last year, I wasn't supposed to buy another snake till I got a new house. Several snakes and a monitor later, still no new house, and I've got an amel tiger retic coming as soon as weather permits. They'll forgive ya, eventually.
