View Full Version : How to find a local rodent breeder?

Although I have a small collection (11), I have a few ball pythons that simply won't eat F/T rodents and I need to get them up to size. And although the local pet shop sells rats for $5/each, I would burn through $$ if I constantly buy from them. Breeding my own is simply not possible at this time.

So I'm looking for a local breeder that can sell me a few live feeders a few times a month or weekly. But HOW do I go about finding someone? It can't be too difficult finding someone local to the North-western suburbs of Chicago, can it? Can anyone offer me some advice? I'm clueless... :dunno:

Check out the shows...normally some if not all the rat breeders are really local to the shows and don't mind the extra cash in between shows.

Check craigslist, or post an ad up that you are looking for a rodent breeder on craigslist.

I got lucky on how I found mine.

Criagslist would be a good start.
If your clever enough try to go to your local Pet shop or reptile store, and trace down where they might be getting their live feeders;)

Thanks everyone!
I checked Craigslist and sure enough I found someone not-too-far that's breeding and selling all sizes of rats. As a plus there's no minimum to buy, so I can call them and pop on over every few weeks and finally start getting my dang Het Pieds up to weight! Had I known pieds were problem eaters...

And if for some unforeseen reason this rat source doesn't pan out I'll just post my own wanted listing on CL. I've been buying and selling on CL a lot lately, so I can't believe that I didn't think of them sooner. :o

Yeah CL is how I found my local dealer. It's awesome when you have a good local feeder dealer. I hate feeding frozen.

I don't remember the header but I searched for stuff like "feeder rodent" "feeder rat" etc. It is probably under pets or hobbies.
