JOHNS6068 11-09-2008, 10:03 AM Some very cool looking snakes in those pic's
JChandler 11-09-2008, 10:10 AM I have always liked the pine snakes....
CornerstoneReps 11-09-2008, 10:45 AM Nice lookin' Pits! We picked up a Red Bull a few months ago and I really like him. Cool snakes. Good luck with them.
Varanus99 11-09-2008, 10:46 AM I got really into pituophis when I kept snakes. I had some northern pines, black pines, patternless pines, gophers, albino gophers and a couple bulls.
I still think the albino gophers are one of the prettiest albinos out there.
Pines are neat in a lot of ways. You wanna talk feeding response? Oh yeah we got that. Plus they do that cool pin the mouse against the wall trick. And they have that super loud hiss which always used to scare people. Heh. And they get pretty big with nice, big, fat juicy babies. Unlike the noodles of some of the other colubrids.

How's the temperament on the red? I know its a bull but I have heard the reds have an even worse attitude than a typical bull....
My 6 1/2' black pine female can hiss louder than a tire going flat if you piss her off. And she isnt all bark either! That heffer latched on to my leg a few months back through my pants. She bit so hard she left a blood blister!

Yeah.....Our Bull does that. After keeping Balls for a few years, it's strange seeing a snake kill a rodent like that.

I must have gotten a unusual Bull because he has never hissed and he's real laid back........except for when you put a mouse in his tub. Man it's great to see a feeding response like that after foolin' with some of these finicky Balls.

When I got into pines/gophers/bulls I really didnt know too much about them. I just thought they were cool looking snakes and they got to be a good size for a colubrid.
Once they settled in I got a taste of what they were all about like. Like when the bullsnake would launch itself at my face or my biggest northern pines would lose his mind when I brought food into the room. It was nearly impossible to get the food in there without getting tagged. I didnt use tongs back them I used the old 1..2..3...GO! Open the cage, throw the mouse in, slam the door try not to get the snakes head caught in it. He got me a couple times though, lol.
The meanest of the bunch was the female bull. She was just impossible. I gave her good hides, I covered 3 sides of her cage with paper to try to calm her down, I put her up high so my movements wouldnt bother her as much. Nothing. She wanted to kill everybody and anything. Soon as I opened the door of the snake room she would start the hiss. And wouldnt stop until I was gone.

I hear ya! My black pine knows when food is thawing and I have to throw a towel over the front of her cage until they are thawed or she will knock herself out banging it on the side of the cage every time I walk by. Crazy ass snake!
She has locked onto me once when I opened her cage and I think she intended on eating my hand as she started moving around like they do when they are looking for the head. I decided it was time to get her off then.....
