View Full Version : New Snake Room
ssshane 10-19-2009, 03:31 PM Here are a few photos from this weekend. We have started working on the snake room. As some of my close friends already know, we are looking to adopt our first child. We have been told the snakes will have to be out of the house. So the adoption is sort of on stand still until this project is completed. Its a 12 x 16 room that will be temp controlled. I cannot wait until this is complete. And believe it or not, the wife is READY to have the snakes out of the house.

norsmis 10-19-2009, 03:33 PM Sweet pics bro! Looks like a nice room you got going. Cant wait to see finished pics. And I hope all works out with the adoption!!!!
FloridaHogs 10-19-2009, 03:41 PM Keep the pics coming as you go! Can't wait to see the finished project!
Looks like your doing a great job so far. I hope the adoption goes as planned!
Larry 10-19-2009, 04:49 PM Awesome project, one I wish I was workin on.. Good luck
Jeanette Marie 10-19-2009, 05:36 PM That is so awesome that you want to adopt:) I have often thought about adopting, it is such a wonderful and precious gift. I did wonder if snakes/pets would be an issue. Was the adoption agency polite about it?
Looks like it's moving right along! How fun and exciting.. can't wait for more pics!
ssshane 10-19-2009, 08:23 PM Was the adoption agency polite about it?
No, not really. One in particular was down right ugly about it. They even said that since my mini weenie dogs also had to go since they may nip at the people coming for the home study. Luckily there are lots and lots of adoption agencies out there.
Thanks everyone for the kind words.
Mrs. Norsmis 10-19-2009, 08:25 PM You're hired!!! Looks great and good luck with the adoption!
They told you that you had to get rid of your DOGS?!?!?!?? Yeah, for sure I'd be going thru a different agency! Wow!
Sputnik 10-19-2009, 08:36 PM Looks liek a nice size yard....
Mrs. Norsmis 10-19-2009, 08:38 PM They told you that you had to get rid of your DOGS?!?!?!?? Yeah, for sure I'd be going thru a different agency! Wow!
Yeah....that's a little extreme!
Looking good so far. And I too look forward to progression pics of the project. Also best of luck with the adoption.
Mrs. Sputnik 10-19-2009, 09:25 PM Looking good and best of luck with the adoption
zombieon3rd 10-23-2009, 02:45 AM Best of Luck to you. Can not wait for the Grand Tour.
Jeanette Marie 10-24-2009, 09:00 PM Telling you that you had to get rid of your dachshunds!:mad:Ridiculous I guess there is no way that they would let us adopt, we have two dobermans and a rotti mix.:dunno: Adoption agencies have gotten so crazy with their rules it is insane. Expensive too. I don't understand it. There are tons of children in foster care needing good homes and they want to grip about pets.
Pheatured Kreatures 10-24-2009, 09:10 PM We recently tried to become foster parents and when DHS did their home inspection, they didn't mind the reptiles, or the yard full of fostered German Shepherds--- they lady was scared of our cats. Kept asking if they were ok with the kids, if they bit or scratched often, things like that...
We were applying to foster teenagers and she was saying that the cats were dangerous-- NOT the snakes or big dogs- the CATS!
One of our cats came into the living room during the sit down interview stuff and she jumped up and went out the front door and we finished the interview on the porch.
Needless to say, she denied our application b/c of the cats, and we are fighting the decision.
Can't wait to see more pics- esp when the room is finished! Looks great so far and lots and lots of luck with the adoption!!

Sorry to hijack the thread. I always thought this was so weird. The kids are in a bad current family situation and they make it hard to adopt in the states. My buddy was adopting a child from a family. And he had to jump through so many hoops and they kept trying to give the child back to the unfit parents. It took him two years to finally get the paperwrok through. I wish you luck
ssshane 11-01-2009, 06:44 PM We got a lot accomplished today, even though it was raining. Only to make matters worse, I injured myself at Lowes yesterday. I was helping an employee load a stand up freezer into the back of a customers truck and cut 3 fingers open. I wasn't sure how bad they were until I got in the bathroom and cleaned it off. I am still not sure what was under the bottom that freezer that made a filet out of my pointer finger. Anyway, here are some photos. Notice the glove on my right hand.

Are you gonna use heat tape to heat it ? :D
But seriously .. I assume you're gonna run electric to it somehow ?
ssshane 12-09-2009, 01:46 PM I will have the electrician come out next week and let me know what all I need to have done as ar as the next step. But to answer the question, yes, there will be power in the Man Cave.
Looking good Shane! Your almost there.

I suggest alarming it as well for security and peace of mind...
ssshane 12-09-2009, 02:21 PM I will surely be putting some type of CCTV and alarm system on the building.

Jaymz 12-12-2009, 04:52 AM Now that is a cool project! The only problem is when you run out of room for more snakes!!!
Any plans for plumbing? A nice deep sink basin would be worth its weight in gold.

Sputnik 12-12-2009, 01:52 PM Great job, look forward to seeing the finished result!
Mrs. Norsmis 12-13-2009, 12:14 PM WOW!!! Looking Awesome! Thanks for sharing the updates.
ssshane 12-20-2009, 06:09 PM Day 7
Today we cut off the over hangs, except in one spot. In the back corner I am going to make a place for a couple large trash cans to sit. I left an overhang there and put a roof over it today.
http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h127/SSuperiorSSerpents/SSnake%20SShack/Day7trashcanarea.jpg
On the inside I have decided to put a shelf around the tops of the walls, and put my reptile books there. I was given a nice corner shelf system today. I will surely put it to use.
Its time for the eaves now. Once they are in place I will have it inspected. I did not list the building as having power, so they will not be looking for the wiring yet. That will buy me some time to do the wiring myself (not the hookups, just the main lines through the walls themselves. Then we can start insulating the walls. Its finally coming together, looking foward to Spring time!

Since I didn't meet my first deadline, I am now in no rush. I really hope to have everything done and ready to move in sometime in Feb. That will include the wiring, heating and cooling systems installed, everything. It may not take that long, but its OK if it does.

Excellent, good luck with meeting the Feb deadline. I'm sorry if I missed it earlier in the thread, but do you plan on plumbing it? If not, what do you plan on doing for water? I can't wait until I can start a project like this.
Rob
ssshane 12-21-2009, 03:15 PM I know I will probably wish I had added water, but I am not. I will have to pull the hose over. It will be a hastle, but not too much of one. I have to take the bins outside now to wash them as I don't have a sink large enough to wash the 41qt bins in. I will have the electrician stop by next week to explain what I need to do next as far as prep work for all the outlets.

Twistedtails 08-21-2010, 02:25 AM Looks awesome brother. You fellas have done a great job. Question; why are you running 12/3 instead of 12/2?
My guess is 2 circuits in one wire??? Or maybe he means 12/2 but he is also including the ground.
J-N. Turcotte 08-22-2010, 03:41 PM Where is the inside pictures ? :)
ssshane 02-16-2011, 08:39 PM After another break (AKA DEER SEASON) as well as I had to take some time to myself to make sure I was going to stick with the hobby I love, I am back focusing on The Shack. I am hoping with 1 or 2 more days work I can move the snakes in.

Wish me luck!
Bigtattoo 02-17-2011, 05:52 AM Looking good Shane can't wait to see the finished and filled picks.
12/3 romex is code in most areas. Black hot wire, white common and bare ground wire. You could also use 12/2 armored BX cable with metal boxes and be in code as the metal armor and boxes will act as your ground. If you look at a 3 prong receptacle it will have a brass, silver and green connectors. Black to brass, white to silver and green is your bare wire ground.
ssshane 02-26-2011, 06:53 PM I finished the walls today. I am hoping to put the vinyl floor down tomorrow. I found a very nice remnant today, already cut to size. If I get the floor down tomorrow, the snakes may be going in tomorrow night!

We have had the snakes in the house for over 8 years. I wasn't sure I was going to like it as much. Now I wish I would have done this from the beginning.

I use 41 qt for them.
