Hey there. Big V here with a book review for your consideration. Walla walla bing bang.
There are pitiful few GOOD books about monitors out there. One of the best, if not THE best, is The Savannah Monitor Lizard by Daniel Bennet and Ravi Thakoordyal. Say that last name five times fast I dare ya.
The book gives some history and biology of varanus exanthematicus. Talks bout where they come from, how they survive, whay they eat, what eats them and all that. Interesting stuff for sure.
But what I really like is the second half of the book where they talk about captive husbandry and actually deliver good, solid information that you can apply and use. They go into proper heating, substrates, caging, feeding and discuss breeding as well. Really good stuff.
The great thing is good monitor husbandry is very similar across the board. So you dont necessarily have to own a sav to get something from this book. A LOT of what is provided here will work very well for many species of monitors with some minor tweaks. It just gives you a good overview of caring for varanids in general. Then you go from there.
A great book for a newbie but I believe it will also be enjoyed be the more experienced keeper. Even if you dont own a varanid and dont plan to I still think this book would be a welcome addition to any herp enthusiasts library.
Lots of pretty pictures, too! And the price is a steal. I got mine from ProExotics. And you should too. Robyn is the cool.
So take a look! Its in a book! A reading rainbow!
