Okay bro how many times have you been checking them with a flashlight to see if they are moving around in there?

Ok you may find this hard to believe but I havent touched them. Double pinkie swear.

Monitor eggs can be very delicate. At least thats my experience. One time I had an egg that didnt look right so I picked it up to check it out. It burst on me and the fluid drained out. Inside I found a still alive partially developed baby monitor which of course died in a matter of minutes. Since then I have been loathe to even TOUCH the eggs once they are set in their egg box.

I open the top like every other day for air exchange when it gets close to the hatching date. I stare at them like Superman trying to see through lead but I dont touch them or shine a flashlight on them. I dont even move the box I just lift the lid carefully. Yes Im paranoid but I had a really bad year and this is my last clutch of the season. With monitor eggs Ive learned "Leave'em alone". If they're gonna hatch, they will. If they dont, they dont. Anything Ive ever tried to do to assist the process has met with failure.

With snakes Ive read plenty of accounts of a baby ball or whatever that is having trouble getting out of the egg. So the keeper will slice the egg and assist to keep the snake from drowning. And it works. I also tried this once with a monitor. He died. No more touchie for me.

That would be enough of a reason for me...I know in the past with beardie eggs (which are like cornsnakes you can damn near hatch them on a shelf) I would use a pen light just to see if anything is happening in there but with that kind of past I wouldn't even look at them cross eyed!

I wasnt aware that beardie eggs were that easy. Thats good information.

Yeah I dont look at them cross eyed, LOL! I also try to smile when I open the fridge. Kinda like a friendly "Hey guys how ya doin'?" smile. Without showing teeth that could be threatening.

Yeah, bad year. You dont even wanna know. I dont know what I did wrong as Im using the same techniques Ive always used. But Ive had a ton of eggs go down. Its been just unreal. Im hatching leos like they're going out of style but the monitors have just been a nightmare. The adults are good, the eggs look good, Im no newbie when it comes to reptile eggs but still...just a really bad year.

The only thing I can think of is one of my clutches became turgid or "tense". Eggs usually start out egg shaped or even oblong and then kinda get rounder as time goes on. But these were like golfballs. And one by one they went down. With fully formed dead babies inside. Horrible. I did some research and while there really isnt all that much information out there about hatching monitor eggs I discovered that my predicament could be due to the hatching medium being too wet. I had been using the standard 1:1 water-perlite by weight which has always been fine in the past. Now Im using a 10 parts perlite to 8 parts water ratio and my latest clutch didnt go turgid on me. Tweakin, tweakin, tweakin.

The leo eggs dont care if I carry them around in my pocket. Wanna hear a story? I have one female who is a machine. She drops eggs like pez dispensers. One day I noticed her tearing the nestbox up so I figured ok more eggs. When she was done I went in there to get the eggs. Sure enough two beauts were in there AND I found two more that I missed! Since leos drop eggs every 2-3 weeks those babies must have been sitting in the nestbox for a while being stepped on and what have you. They looked awful. Well, I figured what the heck I'll put them in a seperate box and incubate them anyway cant hurt. They hatched :)

I hatched a clutch of bearded eggs one year sitting on the shelf next to the cage...I wasn't going to set up another incubator and I was curious. Mind you the room was mid 70's with some night drop but nothing drastic. If I remember correctly it took them 82 days to finally hatch but they came out looking fine and healthy...maybe the colors were a little drab but not to bad IMO.

Good luck again and I think by now you know we will be bugging you day and night....
