I guess it depends on your perspective. Name changes are a perk that I only offer to paid members. Lowest level is $25 per year.

Quite honestly, I get several of these kinds of requests just about every day. And frankly, I just got tired of doing it. So I simply put a price tag on my time. Otherwise, I would much rather spend my time doing something else that I would rather be doing.

Is there a way to change my user name to Rick247. I plan on trying to sell some stuff on the site this year and I would want to change it. Thanks

Rick

Yes it does. Do you expect the man to spend his time changing usernames for all the FREE memberships all day? Maybe he should have said it in a better way but what he was saying was I wont change a username unless you are at least at the $25 contributor level. The man runs numerous websites plus owns one of the largest corn snake breeding companies in the world.... cut him a little slack.

And yes I have been a contributor at that site, as well as a forum mod at one point, there for 5 years.

Yes I would. This is his job he makes his living doing this right. Does not seem like it would take a mod that long to change user name. I guess thats how they treat people coming up trying to start. I have said nothing rude to him either. I was just trying to find out if this was for everyone. I guess its only cash that matters.

Are you a contributor member there? Do you realize how many members are on that site? You said this is how he makes his living right? So if he is changing usernames all day for FREE members, how is he making any money?

norsmis

And to be honest, I dont think he was rude about it. He simply stated he would if you were a paid member....

No - he doesn't make his living running a forum.

Yes - I'm a contributing member there.

I'm also an Admin/Co-Owner of another forum. None of the four owners make any personal money from the site. Any money the site makes is put back into the maintenance of the site.

There is nothing wrong with charging, hell there's nothing wrong with making money....I have been a member there for awhile and until recently I was never a paying contributor. Seems only right when you figure the amount of time and money the site has possibly saved me on a few occasions in the past. If you want to keep your stats then pay to change your name....

I dont think $25 a year is an outrageous amount of money to ask for some personal service. I mean if you think about it if you sell even one low end animal off the site you should make your money back.

Im a contributing member there. And I dont post many ads. But I do use the site and the BOI, despite its flaws, has helped me out a great deal. It helped me find Animal Plastics, Reptile Basics and a whole bunch of top notch breeders/sellers.

So I dont mind giving back a little.

But hey, its your money. If you feel its not worth it than by all means take your business elsewhere.

Hi Rick,

Many people do not realize how expensive it is to run a website or forum. Especially one that gets a lot of traffic. On top of the expense, there is a lot of time that goes into maintaining the sites. If you're not technical, you have to pay someone to do it for you.

I just recently became a contributing member there. If I like a site, I will contribute as I do on a few sites. I will do the same here once I'm in a position to.

Larry and BT will start to understand this very soon, if they haven't already. It's a constant job maintaining the forum, but then you have security updates / patches, OS updates, banner ad maintenance, and feature releases. These are just a few tasks required when running a site like this or Fauna.

We may see it as "just" a name change. However, it's much bigger than that. I know how you feel and see where you are coming from, but put yourself in his place.

Take care, buddy!

When there are so many forums that let you join and post for free - I don't know why there has to be a charge for membership - added charges for benefits and nickel and dime you to death for everything else - if there really is a big demand for name changing then just allow the user to do it themselves.

It speaks volumes about a forum that allows scum that aren't even allowed on other forums to buy their way to "respectability" and as long as you got a couple $$$ you too can join the ranks with the likes of pRick and Ed. No thanks.

If I sound wound tight its because I am. I like being wound tight. Its the soldier in me....

I wasnt trying to be an ass though. I just think you kind of hit Rich below the belt and I defended him a little is all. I cant imagine how much money he spends keeping that site and the other 2 (that I know of) running.
And as stated before, the BOI has saved me a lot of money and time by rousting out the scumbags in this hobby/business. I gladly pay my $25 every year to help keep that going.

Why? So the scumbags in this industry can really put the screws to people by constantly changing usernames?

Just because pRick and Ed have red coins doesn't mean they get any respect. It just means they are high dollar scumbags and everyone there knows it.....

fauna does not charge you to post, sale or reply to ads because it is a free site. paying members just get little better benefits such as name changes and a few other small perks. i post odds and end stuff on there alot for sale and i am not a contributing member at the moment. its like any other market if you want something better then the next guy rather it be a reptile, car, house or any thing you pay that extra $ for it. say someone has a reptile that is low quality and near death, do you give him the $100.00 for it or do you go to someone like BT (just using him as a metaphore) and pay 200.00 for the same reptile but in much better health and a higher quality reptile? the point is if you want the extra perks you have to pay for them. and as stated above in other post it is costly to operate and keep forums up to date so i do not see anything wrong with making someone pay for the extra perks and i myself would not sit around all day and changes free users names either.

The scum bags change their names anyway -- set up new accounts, screw with their IP -- if you let people just change their names -- all their info good or bad will still be attached to the new name.

And pRick and Ed shouldn't be allowed on the forum let alone be allowed to be forum sponsors and such - that they are scum and scam artists just proves that Fauna doesn't care enough to clean house and is more concerned with raking in the money the scum bring. JMO.

Thats right they changed it a couple of months ago that anyone can post now -- I forgot -- and the next time he wants more money for something I'm sure it will go back to a paid membership.

As for better -- that's subjective I guess.

Anyway -- it's no big deal I'm glad Rick got the info/support he needed - we can move on.

In my experience people either love or hate fauna. no matter what you think of the practices over there the BOI is a pretty invaluable section albeit a bit long on arguments and such at times.

I havent even seen an ad by him in the classifieds... I know... I post corns for sale as well.

Even on the side banner.... his ad is almost all the way at the bottom. He doesnt need to use fauna to advertise.

Ive only been there a short time... put I can promise you this.... that site has helped me a bunch.... and as soon as I can... I will be a contributing member... I dont really care bout the name changes though.

With us we'd never charge anything to be a member. Not that anyone would pay but I'd rather take care of the members (after all they are the foundation).

When it comes to the cost of running the site, thats where advertising comes into play.

The Bush-League has perks as well but they must be earned not bought.

Since Fauna has the infamous BOI, and also members that have helped out a lot overall, I support them by having a paid membership, and I even have a Ad there(even though I have no website yet to sell off of!).
In my mind, it's right for him to charge whatever to whoever for whatever he likes, since it's his site. If you don't agree, then don't go to his site.
This site is free, but you have to have "standing" for perks(i.e. be a good member and you get perks! Yay!!). It's a great way to run a site, to encourage people to contribute in a positive way. It's just as right for this site to not charge, as it is for Fauna to charge.
Rich isn't exactly "raking in" money off the site, and with the headaches that come with it, I think I'd rather flip burgers than run a big website like that. Kudos to you guys who run forums.. I don't think my nerves would take it. I help moderate a site and a chat, and that's more than enough fuss for me.

Larry and BT, I completely respect what you guys have and are doing here. I really like this site and find myself spending as much time here as I do on forums I have been a member of for a long time. I will continue to support all the forums I belong to that I like. Every one of them has there own style and "feeling" to it. I would staunchly defend this site just like I do Rich and Fauna.
