I am disgusted by the bold faced lies of the HSUS representative. Not surprised, but still disgusted.

I also love the last guy who says "these things are everywhere! We see them all the time!" and in the next breath says "no one ever sees them." Well, which is it?

Since the committee members gave no response, it is difficult to judge the position it may take. Considering the ridiculous, yet effective, tactic of the HSUS representative in bringing up the little girl who died recently and the four (OH MY GOD!!) deaths in the last two years, I'd say there's a chance it will not go in our favor.

Thanks for the link to the video! :yessir:

Here are my ratings and thoughts on the speeches;

Dan Ashe: B-
Comfortable in front of Washington types. Did not address who will enforce a ban and pay for that enforcement. A Mitt Romney wannabe.

Andrew Wyatt: B+
He made many good points and stated the facts, but could have emphasized on some of them. No doubt he felt constricted by the time limit and concerned to finish within it. Clean shaven and very presentable in a power suit! :wyatt: <-sans 'stach

Elliott R. Jacobson, DVM: C
Too much 'Friendly Professor' and not enough science when he had a chance to dispute the rumors with scientific facts. Spent too much time setting up his background. He was James Stocksdale to Andrew's Ross Perot.

Nancy Perry: B+
A slick tool for the HSUS. Was able to make false statements and assumptions sound as if they were facts. Scary harlot!!!

George Horne: B-
His goal is to do whatever it takes to stop the problem in his state, Florida. Even if that mean taking the whole of the USA along with him. Still didn't offer any solutions to fixing his problem, ever. Probably grows weed in his organic garden.

No doubt the 3-2 odds were against us. It didn't make me happy to watch. Someone needs to clobber Congress in the heads while screaming "Aren't their MORE important issues that you SHOULD be dealing with right now?!!!" Hint: 10% unemployment, 2 wars, health care, housing crisis, etc. (I don't have enough time tonight to write them all down)

And when is anyone going to make the obvious point that if it gets warm enough for constrictors to head north out of Florida, those extra temps are going find Florida (and a good portion of the country) underwater? Won't we have bigger problems than snakes to worry about?

Can't wait to hear what Andrew thinks about the hearing.

In case anyone missed it, here are the 2 links to the video of the HR2811 hearings (.wmv format):

I got to tell you, if you just watched the other vid that only showed the witness testimony, then you don't know just how bad that hearing went. I'm only 20 minutes in, just hearing the Congressmen's testimony, and I feel that the large 9 are going to be gone, kaput. Even Congressman Gohmert (R-TX) said that he wanted to 'take another look at all sides and make a educated ruling', but in the same breath he said "I didn't realize so many of these snakes are in the country" and "it's a bigger problem than I ever imagined".

Guys, it's BAD. :(

It saddens the hell out of me and I'm not sure I can watch the whole thing (I will...painfully, but not tonight). I see a country were you cannot keep large snakes and it's not the kind of place I want to live in. I had 2 boas as a young kid, and they've always had a special meaning to me, and I cannot fathom that they may be illegal and I'll only get to see them in zoos. :(

But what can be done? And as a ball python only breeder do I scramble at this point to concentrate my efforts so they don't go after BPs next? I don't want to throw the large snakes under the bus, but let's be realistic, what are the chances for them when even the republicans are caught up in the hype?

Would love to hear other opinions about the full hearing if you've watched it. Maybe you see the light at the end of the tunnel that I don't? :dunno:

I did watch both parts (about 1 1/2 hours worth). It does get better...the congressmen (and woman) asking more questions. I can't recall his name, but one congressman (from TX, I think) kept asking why this needed to be a FEDERAL bill and not a STATE bill (very keen on his part, I thought). He got the same BS from the HSUS lady about "nipping the problem in the bud before it spreads everywhere". I think he was on our side...thinking it should up to individual states to deal with. I thought the Chairman (Rep. Scott) was very fair and open minded. The lady Rep. from TX was a complete ass (Ms Jackson Lee)! She wants NO one to have ANYTHING that even REMOTELY might be harmful to ANYBODY. Well, just put us all in padded rooms and have the government spoon feed us, because we will have NO choices of any kind deemed to be dangerous by this power freak! Rep. Meek is one slick character...smooth, charismatic, and can lie with a smile on his face...a very dangerous person.

Yes, I do think we have a good chance of having this bill tossed out. Towards the end, you could see the witnesses (against us) answering questions about the seriousness of the problem and the possible spread of the Burmese problem, and all they could do was spout the same US geological data crap over and over. It was obvious that knew nothing about the problem.

Did anyone catch the stat about deaths by python? 12 deaths by pythons in almost 27 (or 29) YEARS! They went back to 1980 (or was it 1982, I forgot now) for their stats...12...in 27 (or 29) years! Then someone raised the stat of death by dogs....20 IN THIS YEAR ALONE! Yep, them big bad Burms are going to eat your kids!! Give me a freakin break!
