Okay, obviously everyone here breeds their meals, but I have some questions:

Has anyone ever done the following:

1) Refrozen a frozen rat if the snake won't eat it?

2) Kept frozen rats in the freezer next to the pizza?

Informally:

How many snakes justify starting a rat breeding program? My corn is getting old and I'm switching to F/T, but my dad used to breed rats for his one BC and seemed like more of a hassle than anything.

1...Nope - I give em to the Borneo's...
2...Yep - Pisses the ol' wife off to no end...

I started breeding my rodents after about 20...

Thanks, BT, but we're not all fortunate enough to have backups who'll eat anything!!

Yes & Yes. We have about 60 boas , a dozen BPs and 40 or so Leos. Buying enough to feed my collection is a definite no no. I'd say once you hit 10 you can justify firing up a few rodent tubs.

1. No (I have bulls, pines, and womas. No need to refreeze!)
2. I would say after 10.

Yes they are a pain in the arse but the convenience and money saved is nice....

1. No. Back when I kept snakes I always had a few garbage cans.I had a couple burms and pines that would usually chow down on anything and if that didnt work the water monitor never refused a meal. Not ever.

When my collection trimmed a couple times I did wind up with a rodent that was too big or otherwise not appropriate for whatever I had around to dispose of it. So in that case I threw it away.

Today I have lizards and sometimes have an extra fuzzy when they are just plain full. So I pitch it. To me its not worth re-freezing to save a few pennies.

2. Yes I have until very recently. I now have a freezer dedicated to my frozen rodents at the request of the gf who was not a fan of going for some ice cream and being stared at by a dozen frozen dead rat eyes. Whats her problem anyway? Meat is meat.

Id say 10 would be a good number to start and 20 for sure. I breed mice and I have a small collection of lizards. I only have one rat eater and I buy those bulk frozen. My mouse breeding colony is small so I supplement with frozen. But the colony has been kicking butt lately so I havent had to buy any frozen pinks/fuzzies for a while. Plus as a bonus the lizards seem to really dig the fresh food. Snakes dont seem to care. If they are willing to take frozen at all then they dont care. The lizards go nuts for live rodents.

All you had to say was "pine" and that would justify never having to refreeze anything.

1) No. I'm paranoid and don't want to swap spit.

2) Yes. You have your choice of rats, mice, rabbit, chicken, pork, beef or frozen veggies. :)
