Last year Kevin, Bryce, Claude, Tyler, Tama, me and a few other people met up for a trip to snake road....was a really good time and we got to see a bunch of cool animals....

Kevin's Pictures (http://www.reptileradio.net/reptileradio/showthread.php?t=6831)

Some of mine (http://www.reptileradio.net/reptileradio/showthread.php?t=6790)

Last Year's Thread about it (http://www.reptileradio.net/reptileradio/showthread.php?t=4226)

Well Kevin and I were talking about when we (he mainly since he has to put in the vacation time now for next year) and we came up with the last week of April thru the first weekend of May 4/24-5/2 being the time we would be heading down...we aren't going to spend the entire week there but a good 5 days this time since the long weekend last time didn't even give us enough time to get way up in the bluffs....

DNR site (http://www.dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/PARKS/R5/GC.HTM) with most of the information about the camp site and what not...we stayed in one of the cabins last year but given that we will be spending more time down there we are definitely going to break out the tent this year...

Cool trip and all are invited 2nd annual BLBC trip...all the info is there and Kevin is really the go to guy with the questions about it all since this will be our 2nd trip and last time I talked to Bryce neither of us think we could find the road again if we tried :lmao:

We have to make sure some of us are there on a Saturday night so we can call in and give a herping update unless we can convince Larry and BT to do the show from the road....

Snake boots are suggested but at least knee high water proof boots after seeing how far the swamp was flooded last year and it looks like it is going to be a wet winter...if we time it all right like last year we were tripping over cotton mouths on the road and I plan on bringing lens cleaner since the venom didn't do anything for my lens last time...

Very southern tip of Illinois (about 6 hours from my neck of the woods), giant state park down there and this one little road where all the migrating takes place...seriously cool stuff.

Lots of time to plan....all kinds of reptiles down there so you can hunt day and night to see them all...we didn't have enough time last year to get very far up the bluffs but this year I want to find a timber out in the open and not tucked away still sleeping...

I can't sleep on the ground anymore. So last year I bought a self inflating mattress.
I slept like a baby.
The bathrooms are clean and near by.
The bluffs are right next to the road with the swamp on the other side of the road.
You can climb bluffs if that's your thing.
Or walk with me on the road and wait for the youngsters to make the finds.
It's a great trip and if you love herps you should see it at least once in your life.

Sorry Im a bit late on this.

If ya have any specific questions... feel free to ask.

I have been approved for my time off.... and I will probably be there Thurs - Sunday. There is several trails at camp and you can blow all day at the road if you like. A couple years ago we walked the road that morning then grilled out on the road during the hotest part of the day and then herped till after dark.

Yeah that's a short summary on it...

It might be still to cold but you never know...I think it was mid april last year and the timbers still weren't out yet...

Southern Wolf
11-22-2009, 12:55 AM
yep.... I doubt you will find many snake out in March.

Hitting the migration dead on is always a crap shoot... especially when you plan this far out since it all depends on the weather... but NORMALLY middle of April to first part of May is when they really start moving. Question is... are you gonna nail the migration... or catch one end or the other..... to early to tell. I can say this... we will have fun.

Larry..... you and BT come on up.... hell.... do the show from camp..... how cool would that be. IF needed... I will supply the laptop with wireless connection.

I can understand that. But this is an in inexpensive little trip.
Little 4 man tent. Sleeping bags. $5.00 a night for the campsite.
Some hotdogs over an open fire. Stay 2 days or as long as you want.
The only real expense is the memories that you won't have if you don't go.
It's a great time and we would love to share the trip with you.

I should be at camp around noonish on the 29th. After I get camp set up (unless Im expecting someone to show up shortly) I am going to go check out some of the trails at camp (there are ALOT of them)

I plan on doing alot of hiking and herping on the 5 days I am there. My goal is to find enough stuff so I come home with over 4000 images to process. For anyone that is going... I am more than willing to help you out on improving your photography skilz if you so desire.

I may be cutting my trip one day short and coming back on the 3rd instead of the 4th. Im trying to get one of my members from HF to join us, but she has to be back home on the 4th... and I will be her ride.

Will let you know for sure if I have to leave a day earlier than I originally planned.

Last year I took Ty out of school for one day. His teachers and the principal thought it was a great educational opportunity.
His science teacher even gave him an assignment to write down all the reptiles he saw. He got extra credit for the great pics. We drove down on Friday. Came home on Sunday.
It is unbelievable to walk down a road and see Cottonmouths sitting there with there mouths open.

Yep.... if your gonna show up... I dont have any problem giving you my cell so you can locate me.

You will definitly have a blast if you decide to join in the fun. Me and Josh (other admin from HF) are planning another cookout on the road again this year.

What we did last time was get to the road about 10am.... walk it up and back.. which put us back at the parking area around 1pm..... then everyone that wanted to participate thru some food on the grill (I'll be supplying this) and we kicked back and relaxed for a while and ate some lunch. We then took off again hiking and herping into the night.

It was a blast.

How can anyone get worn out when we stop to take pictures every 10 feet I think...lol

I am bringing my hiking stool with me when we go this year...I got this collapsible tripod stool that packs in nicely and is a blessing when you are in areas where you can't sit down, like a place full of leaf litter and venomous reptiles

Well I think a bunch of us from the Chicago Herp Society are going to be down there at the same time with our speaker from that months meeting Jeff Lemm. It is a great time down there for sure and well worth the trip. There are some things worth pointing out to first time visitors (and some veterans who seem to forget or feel special)

-No snake hooks or tongs allowed
-No collecting of anything on the road
-Technically no touching (No "harassing")
-Every object (log, rock, ect..) should be put back in the exact same place as before you touched it, or in the place it was before the jerk before you rolled it 5 feet away
-Ticks are all over and lyme disease is present (got it 3 years back) so be very careful and aware of the tiny ticks
-Tons and tons of poison ivy
-venomous snakes are all over so be very careful of hand placement and don't try to go Steve Irwin with tailing everything

The video linked showed a bunch of people handling animals and a couple forestry guys with hooks moving hots even though they do not allow that and the rangers can ticket you for it. I love getting down there but I am too big to camp. I need a hot shower and somewhere to do a tick search. A crappy bed is still better for me than a air mattress, my back can't take those. I think I am going to have to search out the campsite this year for the camp fire BSing. I know a large group from FieldHerpForum.com goes down every year as well. They might be going the same weekend which will make for some crazy fire side times.

Just thought I would share, I stopped by Gander Mountain today just to see if they carry Snake Boots in Stock and they do for those of you that do not like to order online or don't have a Bass Pro Shop close. They only had three different types two were priced at $129.99 and the other was $79.99.

Once I get my expense check I am going to pick up a pair and have already asked for a few days off work. Can't wait to come and check it out.

Going to give them a buzz here, our cabelas and bass pro both don't stock snake boots this far north....I think we were lucky enough to find the shin ones last year locally...might be worth checking out if they have them, save a few dollars on shipping that way and I can try them on which is always a fear buying online...
