View Full Version : Housing baby corns
skm0308 11-21-2009, 09:22 PM I won't be doing any breeding of corns until next year, but I'm curious how you all house the babies. I'm trying to figure out the best way to house them and have a few ideas, just want to be as space efficient as possible while giving the babies enough room to be comfortable. As of now I only have 3 females so I'm looking at 30-50 babies I'll need space for. Thanks.
norsmis 11-21-2009, 09:26 PM The best way is with a rack system. Corns dont need as much room as say ball pythons so you can use smaller tubs. I have also used the 6" delis for a few months with success. I have also used a 10 gallon tank for entire clutches with success (depending on clutch size).

Here's my initial idea, they're basically drawers with lids that slide into the cart and just adding a divider to each. No need to heat as my snake room is 78-80 year round. If I could find some totes smaller than 6 qt I'd consider building another rack for them.

Buckskin built him and I both a rack based on a Ziplock container. They are about 11 inches long x 7 inches wide x 3 inches tall. Perfect size for corns!

That sounds like something more manageable, got any pics?

Here you go!
JChandler 11-22-2009, 07:44 PM Those look good Ron, I always used ziplock sandwich containers for the first few months then moved them into shoeboxes as needed....
skm0308 11-22-2009, 07:45 PM Sweet, thanks Ron! What is that material the racks are made out of?

These are about twice the length of the sandwhich containers which allows you to keep them in em longer. Claude built him and I both one and it works great! Thanks buddy!

Thanks Jeff, that's kind of the route I think I'm going to take. I like being organized though and not sure how much stacked tupperware is going to bother me! :lmao:

Melamine shelving. I am sure Buckskin can give you the details on how he made it. I will get him to chime in for us!

The only plus is come cleaning time you can move them all straight to the kitchen and do it all by the sink....had to do that twice a week so it worked out well for us...Natures spirit used to make a rack that took the sandwich containers...have seen a few just not that many out there.

There was also a guy on cornsnake.com who made a 10 stack of them pretty cheap. I used the 6 inch delis the same way Jeff for years. Just grab a whole stack of em and get em done!!!
chrisr9240 11-24-2009, 05:36 AM i use the sterilite index card boxes and i can just stack them on a shelf and on top of racks but my whole room is heated
Southern Wolf 11-25-2009, 03:11 PM I use the Rubbermaid Take-a-long rectangular sandwich containers... and I just leave the lid on them and stack them. I currently have around 70 of them in use :)
