View Full Version : Dragon eggs
JOHNS6068 12-18-2009, 05:01 AM My one female Hypo dragon laid her first clutch ever tonight of what will probably be the start of many more to come ....First time for bearded dragon eggs for me as well....I never witnessed a copulation between her and the male...though they were fooling around a lot.....but I knew over the past few days she was getting close to laying as she always was digging at the side of her cage...made her an egg box and she finally dropped her eggs tonight....I got a total of 20....right now I'm leaning towards they probably aren't fertile being her first clutch.....Tried my best not to rotate them when I dug them out.....and stuck them in the incubator anyhow and will check them in a few days to see if I can see any veins...hard to any veins right now...some have a red dot and some don't....:dunno: Dang things are so small!!!....Either way still pretty cool seeing that many little eggs......She looks pretty darn good to after dropping that kind of load....:yessir:

crypticdragons 12-18-2009, 10:38 PM judging from the color and size of those eggs id say most of them are fertile.

Good luck. I agree, most of that clutch looks good.
JOHNS6068 12-19-2009, 01:24 PM Well I'm not seeing any veins in any of them when I candle them...one or two of them I do see a red dot sorta like a bulls eye in them...I will keep incubating them....At what point should I easily see veins in them for sure?????

Not sure on dragons, but I know its between 2-3 weeks for veins to show on my Marginata eggs. (and 180+ days of incubation!)

From what I read you don't always see them right away with dragon eggs...I read about you sometimes see a red dot in them...but I can't seem to find any info on when I should see veins for sure?....Incubation is around 6O-68 days I believe depending on what temp your using....
I'm sure Jeremy or Sara will be on and give you the numbers. Until then just follow the old saying " Keep them til they stink".

That's the plan
Yuppers, keep em til they stink is perfect, lol!!!
Okay, personally I don't bother looking for viens or dots or anything else. I look at the overall appearance of the egg from the outset and stick it into the incubator and that's all she wrote. Going back to the first pic I'd go with 6 or 7 that look like they may shit the bed, but aside from that the rest look good. The "wrinkly" looking ones are the ones that you want to keep an eye on, pull em if they don't fill out within a day or 2, or you could wait until they start molding. I have had eggs that looked like that that hatched, but the babies from them were weak and died within a couple of weeks. Now I don't bother, but that's just me.
Between 84-86 they should hatch at about 60-65 days, although I have had them go almost 75 at 86 degrees! (Of course, Bruce will tell you it's cuz I wouldn't leave the incubator door shut, kept checking on them, lol!) So aside from adding a little moisture if needed during incuabtion, you look you like you should be all set! Have fun watching them grow!

Thanks for the info...I'm bad to about staying out of the incubator...It's a wonder my first clutch of ball pythons eggs all hatch last year....My eggs get plenty of fresh air to say the least  But having dealt with that BP clutch last year I'm not so nervous now as I was then with these eggs  Just like to see some veins when I candle them....Cause I'm still curious as weather they are good as I never saw a visual lock between the two...now I know that doesn't mean it couldn't have happened....Just if I saw some veins I'd know for sure weather it did or not before they all start going stinky or hatch even...

the bulls eye is a good sign you might not see veins
tokaysunlimited 12-19-2009, 05:14 PM Seperate the deflated ones and incubate them in a seperate container.
Dont worry about veins and all that crap with em.Beardie eggs are pretty indistructable.
Also Sara is right on the temps and period.
Sputnik 12-19-2009, 05:36 PM Looks like a small Omelette in the making, good luck!
Larry 12-19-2009, 06:05 PM Awesome John. Thats going to be a lot of hypo babies, congrats.

I am HORRIBLE about staying out of the incubator! And we have converted ones that Bruce made from old glass door freezers, so you can see right into them! And I use clear plastic tubs, so really I have NO excuse, lol! But, as it gets closer to hatch date I have a bad habit of talking to them. Seriously. Picture me standing there with a tub of eggs saying "Hi little guys! Time to come out and play! Aren't you feeling squished up in there yet? Come on out!" I get laughed at alot. And yelled at one time for actually (lightly) knocking on the sulcatta eggs... :lmao:
Af for if they are good, if they were not good they wouldn't look like that at all. Well, mabey the wrinkly ones, but other than that they are small and yellow and hard when there hasn't been any hanky panky going on.
JChandler 12-19-2009, 10:56 PM Just if I saw some veins I'd know for sure weather it did or not before they all start going stinky or hatch even...
just give it a few weeks, you'll be able to see...you're not looking for veins look for the red glow....old pic but you get the idea...the yellow ones are the bad ones.

JOHNS6068 12-24-2009, 12:47 AM Well I just candled the eggs again tonight......and I see in several of them now single red spots in quite a few of them I hadn't seen before....and two of them I could actually see the tiniest bit of movement...sorta looked like the heart beating I thought....Pretty cool to see  So I'm sure now at least a few of them are fertile

I know you and everyone else said they looked good....but being my first dragon eggs......I just wanted some sure sign they were..something I could recognize and when I saw that movement tonight and red dots that weren't there last week.....that's just what I needed to feel real good about them being good myself....Now I'm going to be as bad as I was with the BP eggs......I'll try and leave them alone as much as possible really I will....V isn't here to hollar at me either to stay out of the incubator

LOL! Hey John... STAY OUT OF THE INCUBATOR!!!:nono:
amreptiles 01-06-2010, 06:05 PM Cool they look great.
Best of luck with them.
Just another reminder John... Stay Out Of The Incubator! LOL!
Oops, I just remember that it's been a while since your last reminder soooo...
Hey John!!! Stay Out Of The Incubator!!!
(And how are they looking by the way? Are you getting antsy yet?)
JOHNS6068 01-23-2010, 04:05 PM I'm down to about half a dozen last I checked...:o I started out with 20 some..but half them weren't fertile and molded and shrunk real soon after she laid them......a few others have taken the slower road to decay..some of them about (6) still look really good....I have been leaving them alone.....and the way the females look more eggs aren't far away....or they are just fat one of the two...So I'm not shedding a tear for any lost eggs just yet

Sure she's ready to drop a bunch more for ya!!! Good job on still having some left! Won't say how long ago, but my first clutch I killed by keeping way too dry, second I overcorrected that and drown them. So you are already way up on me!!
John I hope the others make it . Good luck.
