Excuse me for a second...

:wamma::wamma::wamma::wamma::wamma:

Im so happy I could just kiss a croc monitor right on the lips. As a matter of fact, I just might do that!

Here's hoping they are healthy when they finally emerge. Ive had their baby cage set up and waiting since September! LOL!

I wanna respond to everybody Im so giddy!

Kare: Thank you! Yes I love once they emerge, kinda get comfy in their new surroundings and go nuts!

Tosha: Thank you!

Luccidream: I was close but luckily they hatched before my maternal instincts took over! I have not decided yet if Im keeping any. I have enough yellow adults and would like to get some reds. BUT this is a special clutch to me so I may just hang on to a few. At most I would keep 3 so if all 5 hatch 2 would be up for grabs. I have a few people who have said they want some but nothing is set in stone. If someone from the BLBC is interested in a couple I would do my best to accomodate them. But I have to keep them with me for at least 2 months to make sure everything is ok before I even think about sending them on their way.

JHknudson: Thank you!

JChandler: Thank you! Almost as good as a new pair of aglets!

Tama, very little.

Got another head out. 3 to go!

Im really nervous about these guys. But when they all hatch together or very close to each other its a good sign that the incubation went right. So one pipped last night, new guy pipped either very late last night or early this morning and I see a slit in a third egg but no head yet. So far so good.

Wish I knew.

I put this trio together from 3 different sources. One female came from a show in NY. The male came from a buddy of mine. The other female was a rescue. She had some problems and I nursed her back to health. She is still a little gimpy but doing much better. As a matter of fact these are her eggs.

She went from near death to producing fertile eggs. I did EVERYTHING for her. She was a mess when I got her. I practically breast fed her, LOL! Makes me happy that shes doing well now and makin' babies. Thats what monitors do dontcha know

Yea, some of the guys know there stuff, but like you said, no where better to learn, Have you been over here yet? Some read good reading if your into journals and such....

http://varanidae.org/home

you know at 120 days and more for the Prasinus complex that's a lot of stress watching those cook... One thing i noted, at least for some of the more tropical species, towards the end, less humidity. Once i started doing this the eggs stayed healthy longer and then some hatched.

But, do what your doing you cleared a nice hurdle...

Varanus99
11-17-2008, 09:51 PM
Yes Im familar with that site. Good reading.

I did have some moisture/humidity problems on some other clutches.

I adjusted my mix from the usual 1:1 ratio verm/water to 10 parts verm 8 parts water. And when I mix it I leave the slop in the old container so its probably a little less than that.

And I also open the tubs and let them breathe quite a but towards the end so I would guess that would also release some humidity. But i dont change the substrate to a dryer mix is that what you do?

Ok you got the Chuck Norris smiley beat.:yourock:

Two on the ground

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg239/Varanus99/001-2.jpg

Thats all for now I dont want to freak them out too much.

It looks like this small clutch will be 100% hatch. I got 2 out, 2 noses poking out and one more egg that hasnt done anything yet but looks promising. I love it when they all hatch within a few days of each other.

These two look perfect. Big, fat bellies. Running around the egg box. I moved them to a different box away from the other eggs. They will spend one more day in the inucbator on some moist paper towels with a little hide and then its into their nursery cage. Which is really just a smaller version of an adult cage. Same stuff.

Then maybe another day and I offer them food. And then it begins. Their 1 year mission. To seek out insects and anything remotely meaty. To explore every inch of the cage for something to eat. To boldy consume more food per gram of bodyweight than any species of lizard known to man! These are the voyages of the Starship Varanid.

Ooooooooooooo Ooooooooooo Ooooooo Oooooooooo Ooooooo Oooooooooo...

V that is awesome! I can't wait to see them all running around and all the holes they are going to put in your hands in the search for food...

Varanus99
11-18-2008, 08:11 AM
Hehehe.

Ackies are pretty good about biting the hand that feeds them. Of course when they go into a frenzy its every man for himself. But usually they are good about determining what is food and what is hand. Usually.

There are exceptions. When they do manage to grab ya they bulldog ya. Its no bite and release at least not in my experience. They are small so it really doesnt hurt but they hang on like grim death. I once had a female about half grown tag me and latch on to the side of my hand when I was moving around some food and got sloppy. So I figure ok just stay still and she'll let go. Ok maybe a little tap on the head and she'll let go. Ok maybe if I show her a pinkie and wiggle it around she'll let go. She's not letting go. Now of course I cant yank her off as Im afraid Ill damage her jaw. Arent we something? Herpers are always more concerned about their animals than our own skin. And all the while she is bearing down harder, shaking her head trying to rip a chunk of goodness off.

So now Im just kinda hanging out with my hand in the cage and a lizard attached to it thinking "Well this is just a fine how do you do. Grown man with a small lizard trying to eat him. Just great". Then I spied my misting bottle and gave her a couple squirts right in the kisser. She didnt like that and let go. Now we just kinda give each other the stink eye whenever Im in the room.

JChandler

Arent we something? Herpers are always more concerned about their animals than our own skin.

I had an adult male bearded dragon literally skin my thumb once when I was moving him, stupid move on my part not tucking my thumb in when trying to keep him calm but he hit it and then just kept spinning on it almost like the gator death rolls. He finally did let go but I never knew a bearded dragon could be that insane...taught me to not just carry them in after letting them sun outside.

Ive always heard that natural sunlight can turn an otherwise docile lizard into a killing machine. They revert back to their roots. I live up north so I dont make it a habit of bringing lizards outside. Ive never tested the theory.

Maybe there is some truth to it?

Ok off topic a bit but I cant resist.

My parents had a GIGANTIC stereo cabinet thing with speakers on each end covered in red velvet and wood trim. Hideous. Yup we had the record player with the 8-track. The thing had 572 knobs on it and I think maybe 3 actually did anything. That is to say until the power button broke off and we went in with the needle nose pliers. It weighed about half a ton. On a good day maybe you could hear it in the next room.

My whole childhood is a blur of "I Got You Babe" and "Stayin' Alive".

Remember when the records used to get scratched? How about when you dropped the needle on a record and your parents threw a fit? Or an 8-track got stuck? LOL!

These kids today dont know how good they have it. When I was a boy I had maybe a dozen 45 records and a few LPs. Now kids are running around with 10,000 songs on an Ipod thingamajiger. I didnt even know that many songs existed.

we used to sing "i've got kool-aid" in our best sonny 'n chere voices...
i remember the 8-track in my car was worth more than my car...
and my kids both have most of my cd collection(which relaced all of my record collection and then some to the tenth power) on their apple slice pod things...at least i'm listening to the same stuff i tortured my parents with !
gotta love that ! onion's got zepplin, van headache, boston, kiss, rainbow, queensryche, clapton, etc. on that little thing, probably enough music to drive to BT's and back without playin' the same song twice !

You all are old -- but sadly so am -- as I remember the 8 track fondly. We had the ginormous stereo system as well with the record player that had the little pop up middle to fit 45s except we kids played with it so much and it broke  but talk about big - the thing had more buttons and sliders than the freakin space shuttle -- oh and we had reel to reel as well - looked like a friggin movie projector.

I like my Ipod very much - I've actually got two one for regular listening and one that I use for running -- I've found Nickleback to be excellent running music.

Congrats on the clutch and on the medal :rockon::rockon:

well tosh, wasn't looking to date myself (besides, the old lady won't let me date anyone but her, stingy she is) but i guess all 'a these rack users will never be as old as us old stainless steel metal frame fish tank users (the ones with the slate bottoms...remember ? ), until we all die, and they can then catch up.
but i degress, how much a runner are 'ya ?
i gotta 10k i'm doin' this weekend, you ever enter races ?

Jesus, bunch of geezers here... I've never seen an 8track... hell I almost missed the cassette tape craze...

just imagine the kind of toaster that can toast a 1/2 bagle...only one slot, and horizontal.

The last guy is out of the egg.

Ive been calling them the Four Horsemen but now its the Four Horsemen +1. Or the Five Horsemen but that has no biblical significance.

More pics to come! Im on the case. They are all hiding in their new cage and I dont want to disturb them. Id like to get a meal into them before I start the posing. But if one comes out to play Id snap a pic of him.

CK: Oh dear me I remember the slate bottom steel framed tanks. I kept my first herps in those. I used to have them on shelves and when it was time to clean them I would drag them down, carry them outside and hose them out. Then lug them back upstairs. Brutal. Much different from slide out plastic tub, rinse, repeat.

We were hardcore back then. I used to heat my snake cages with coal. Yeah, thats right coal. And we didnt have crickets. We used to have to catch spiders and disguise them. And calcium? We fought the neighborhood dogs for bones and grinded them up with our teeth. Yeah. All that stuff.

It's no duck walk lemme tell ya.

By day 100 you start getting nuts. Checking the incubator every 5 seconds. Staring at the eggs hoping you develop X-ray vision. Wacko crazy stuff.
