View Full Version : rainbow boa and setup
earthpig23 11-17-2008, 02:21 AM here is my BRB setup right after changing the cypress mulch out before I wet it again. its a tub used for christmas wrapping paper and etc. taped up most the holes and the humidity stays perfect for her.

Man, I gotta get a bigger house or kick out the ol' lady and the boys to make more room. She's gorgeous Mike. Nice and plump too. Doesn't miss a meal I'm bettin'.
Mrs. Sputnik 11-17-2008, 07:41 AM She is gorgeous.........just look at those vibrant colors
FloridaHogs 11-17-2008, 07:57 AM Stunning Mike! Do you ever have issues with mold and such on the mulch?
Varanus99 11-17-2008, 08:34 AM I have to chime in as well. Really nice colors on that one.
I used to keep rainbows many years ago. And the problem I had was finding animals with really outstanding colors. And then hoping they would hold or even improve those colors. I think I had 6 of them at one point and none of them looked that good. Thats a keeper right there.
Ever consider trying to find a sharp looking male for her?

earthpig23 11-17-2008, 09:18 AM Stunning Mike! Do you ever have issues with mold and such on the mulch?
nope thats why i use the cypress mulch it does not mold with the high humidity. I spot clean weekly and completly change it out every three weeks or so.just have to make sure you bake the mulch or use provent a mite to keep any mystery lil bugs from showing up. not mites or anything but there are these lil bugs that show up later nothing that hurts but I just didnt like it.

Thanks V! I know exactly what you mean I have been on the look out for a male nd even had one for awhile raising up but didnt turn out well as it aged. I'm pretty picky as to what to breed with her so looking for an adult with such high standards as well is tough.
I may be getting a really nice male from jeff clark soon.
norsmis 11-17-2008, 09:29 AM She is definitely a smoker Mike! This is one species I have never worked with but that little might change my mind!!!!
tokaysunlimited 11-17-2008, 09:37 AM Pretty killer lookin BRB there buddy!!!

I wouldn't mind one it's just there's a lot of other things I wouldn't mind having as well  She is a beauty and if I was looking for one she is where I would start. I see a lot that are really dull in color. But she is awesome looking!!! I hope you find a male just as nice. You should make some sweet babies then. Bets of luck =)

thanks. yeah i am dissapointed when i check out BRBs lately many are produceing junk just to breed them and it does take some tim to get the females to size. but some of them are getting so dull they are barely different than a columbian rainbow when it comes to color.
they are still pretty snakes just wish more wuld focus on selctive breeding so it wouldnt be s hard to find her a mat.
JOHNS6068 11-17-2008, 03:21 PM To be honest I never really given much thought about having one till I seen how nice the one you have is. Because of all the duller looking ones I see at shows. It is a shame how people have bred down the quality of these boas just to make a quick dollar. Really is sad =(

thanks again. yeah i got lucky with her I got her from a bush league breeder ( a female at that) who just had a small trio of really nice looking BRB and she just bred every other year just for the hobby of it and not money. now I cant find her again AAARRRRGH
yeah and its the same with the pastel BPs.
Mrs. Sputnik 11-17-2008, 03:30 PM of course you and my best mate are on the list sis.

nope just a little attentin to detail thats all. if you have the cage space...the cypress mulch wet for humidit and watch the temps your good.
I discussed with jeff clark the fact that when you temp the BRBs they are almost always a 78 degrees when you temp them that seems to be their perfect temp. so I just keep them in a temp controlled room set at 78 and they thrive!! they cannot handle the heat though if they see temps at mid 80's or above and they dont last long at all. they are nt as sensitive for RI but are sensitive to dehydration.
basically
temp gradient from 70 cold to 80 warm so they can find the sweet spot. large enough space. humidty at high 70's for babies adults can handle lower 70's cause they drink more but i still keep the humidty up. and thats it. they love to eat if happy.

yep and with these ist the best way. and they unlike BPs if they are not eating youve got something wrong and a simple setup is easy to adjust

sorry after rereading this there is a typo the babies need high 90's when it comes to humidity percentages.
