I decided to get a small mouse colony. I want some live pinkies for the spring for the stubborn corn babies. The rest of the year I will raise them to whatever size I need and then freeze them to supplement what I will buy. So my question is this. I bought 1.4 and threw them in a 10 gallon tank. I have been reading in different areas that the pregnant female should be moved into a separate tank. I have also read just to leave them all in the same tank and just separate the babies when they are weaned. Which way is the best way? If a female is taking out for a month or two can you throw her back in with the rest, or will there be fighting?

When I did a lot of mice I kept them in groups of 1.4 or 1.5 and left them together. Never had any problem with them that way. They seem to take care of the babies as a group unlike rats who will fight over them and try to be separate from each other.

Did you have them in a tank or tub that was similar in size?

Same here. I keep 1.3 in 10 gallon tanks, and pull the babies when they wean. Moms will communally take care of the babies, keeping them in one big pile, and dad doesn't bother them a bit.
Removing mice then re-introducing them causes unnecessary bickering, IMO. Just leave 'em together.

Yep. Leave em all together. a 10 gallon is perfect size for 1.4. Did this for years and had oodles of pinks!

Same here I even have about 1.10 or more in groups right now and keep them all together....each tub always has a nice big pile of pinks in it and all the momma mice just seem to find a spot on the pile....

Thanks for the replies guys. We picked out the females that might already be pregnant and the male is chasing the females as I type. So hopefully I will get some pinkies in the not so distant future.

Wow I can't believe how quick they go from having a little bulge in the midsection to having babies. One of them gave birth and two others look like they are ready to explode. They must really grow in the last seven days.
