What is your favorite species you have ever worked with? Most manageable? Why? Pics would be great too if you have them!

Only had a few different species.... Niles, sav's, storri, ackies and lace monitors....

Loved the lacey's most, pretty easy to work with.... mine were all wild caught by myself, give them respect and food. They get used to you, tolerate you etc. My housing was 14ftX6X8ft outdoor bird cage basically.

Hard for me to pick a favorite. I had a 3 legged savanah that was phenominal, best tempered thing ever. He'd follow you around like a dog. But I love my blue trees just for the looks, and the fact that the size lets you give them a wall instead of a room. The green trees are also very pretty, and not as schitzy as the blues. There are pics of my blues as well as the green on here already. We also have a sulpher water monitor and a pair of black waters that all are good. The female black is a sweetheart. Her you can just pull right out and carry around like a baby, very nice animal.
I guess I really can't pick a favorite...

Does anyone know of any dwarf monitors that do as well in captivity and are as active and inquisitive as ackies?

I have a list of favorites that I'd love to keep eventually, they are all smaller monitors, and while most are not as "outgoing" as ackies and can be more skittish, in a display cage would still be exceptional captives:

Varanus pilbarensis
Varanus glauerti
Varanus tristis tristis
Varanus acanthurus acanthurus

And I definitely wouldn't mind some V. prasinus. :D

Any captive bred monitor can do incredible as a captive, and given time can learn to trust the keeper. All it requires is the correct setup, husbandry, and routine!

Yeah I agree. I liked the glauerti and pilbaras, but Robyn at PE said the glauerti never seemed to thrive in captivity for them and I've heard the pilbara are extremely pricy. I am starting to like the tristis though...

The thing is, glauerti might not have done well at Pro Exotics, but I know a few people in the US getting eggs on a regular basis.

It's all in how their kept, I personally don't think glauerti should be kept like ackies, and I'm fairly certain that's how they were keeping them at PE. Plus, the Kimmies from what I've read/been told prefer higher humidity levels than that of ackies.
