View Full Version : Bird of Prey ID anyone?
JChandler 01-29-2010, 10:46 PM Followed this quick bird around for 2 days now, think I located it's nest but it is never there...without getting into details and the amount of traffic laws I had to break to even get this photo let me just say it wasn't fun...why can't they just sit nice and let me take a picture....lol
Anyway who can tell me what it is, wasn't what I thought it was and haven't looked it up just yet...
My guess would be a male Coopers Hawk Jeff. Great shot.
JOHNS6068 01-29-2010, 10:51 PM Looks like a coopers hawk...We have the same ones inside the barn here...Nice shot..

edit....Damn, too slow!
JChandler 01-29-2010, 10:58 PM That's it, very cool thanks guys....never actually documented seeing one that I have been aware of, I am impressed at it's speed and agility...when I first saw it taking after prey I thought for sure I was going to see a peregrine falcon until I got closer and could judge the size and see it through the lens...found something cool to stalk for awhile until the weather breaks...
Mrs. Sputnik 01-29-2010, 11:00 PM Cool pic jeff

Young red-shouldered I found in a sheriff's yard. As you can see, he hated me. lol

Very nice shot!! The light it hitting it just right...
We usually try to make a trip a little north up the Mississippi to see the wintering bald eagles. Tomorrow may be a good day for it....

FloridaHogs 01-31-2010, 02:29 PM Nice shot Jeff!
ChrisK 02-15-2010, 10:15 PM It’s either a male cooper’s hawk or a male sharp shinned hawk. About the only difference is that the cooper’s are a little bit bigger. (If you took the picture this time of year, it’s a sharp shinned as the cooper’s have migrated much further south for the winter)............is my guess
Tim Mead 02-16-2010, 10:18 AM Nice photo,beautiful bird and a little edjamacation..
dempserg 02-16-2010, 10:41 AM Its almost impossible to tell from the shot whether its a coopers or sharp shinned hawk. I can positively ID it if you have any other angles. Best characteristics to look for when IDing them is size (if you have something to compare them to, hard to do when they are isolated) tail shape and color (color not always reliable), legs and flight pattern.
dempserg 02-16-2010, 10:42 AM Nice photo, BTW. Post more if you can :)
JChandler 02-16-2010, 07:14 PM Wish I could, my area I've been working was moved so it will have to wait until I get back over there by it...it was in the same spot for a week straight when I finally got that picture so I hope it is still around when I am able to get back there again.
