I always here that ASF's and mice do better with 1/4", as opposed to 1/2" with rats. I have several rat setups, all made with 1/2". Next time I go to an expo I want to pick up a trio of ASF's. However, I don't want to change out my mesh. Any suggestions?

Young hopper sized ASF can crawl out the 1/2" mesh and they're hard to catch. LOL!!! I don't know, maybe you can just lay some 1/4" over the top and wire it down.

Peter, I've heard the same. 1/4" Hardware cloth for mice and ASF, 1/2" for Rats...
I don't think the problem is with the adult ASF escaping but the weans-hoppers...
You might have to change it out.

I've had rats and asfs chew holes in the 1/4" cloth.
But, yeah, baby asfs can get out of the 1/2" and they aren't fun to chase down - maybe they make a stronger 1/4" than what I got (?) I dunno I'm not Home Depot savvy.
But if it were me I'd stick with the 1/2" for strength but put some 1/4 over it to keep the little buggers in.
Yep 1/2" is bad. Jeff just caught a lil ASF the other day running around the house. We only have one cage left with the 1/2" and just haven't replaced it with the 1/4" yet.

I do, you get the odd one crawl out. Doesn't happen often and this time of year that is a death sentence.... but the terrier has the green light on anything running loose in the garage....

I use plastic tubs with Hardware cloth tops.
