So I find these little buggers all the time down south and on the valley floor. However, despite a few random historical records (and countless hours of searching) I had been unable to turn up any actual live specimens in the foothills where I work. These guys are beyond cryptic - pitfall traps, transect surveys, random searches and I've still had zero success in the last 5 years. Well today.......

I give you The Longnose. Rhinocheilus lecontei. cute little bugger, too. :yessir:

Yup, I so wish I'd had the forethought to get into something like this when I was younger. It's like livin' a dream. Congrats on the find Kat

Cool find Kat! You're right- He is a cute lil bugger! When you find stuff like that, do you just take some pics and measurements and release it? Or is there more to it than that? Just curious....

Thanks for asking. In cases like this guy, where there is no real study being done (because there aren't enough of them to make it time or cost efficient), I generally take various measurements and use a temporary mark on them, just in case they are recaptured within a short time (usually under 2-3 months before the tag wears/sheds off). Other than that, I just report it to the local conservation database for historical records and that's it. :yessir:

Kat
