View Full Version : Couple of Bullsnake questions
anendeloflorien 02-15-2010, 11:09 AM Hey so I'm thinking of getting into the bullsnakes a bit more and I'm looking for a little bit of info from you guys who have more experience with them (I know you're out there lol).
First a couple of morph questions. Are the majority of bull morph recessives? Is there any dominant/co-dominant morphs out there? Also I'm kind of wondering if the "white-side" that I picked up is actually a white-side after seeing a couple pictures on KS of snows......
http://market.kingsnake.com/detail.php?cat=6&de=719634
Is that a mis-marked white-side or could my white-side be a mismarked snow?
Also what do you find is an ideal temp/humidity for them? I've been keeping mine at pretty typical colubrid temps around 80 for a hot spot and 70-75 for ambient temps.
Appreciate any help and I'm sure I'll have more for ya later!
JOHNS6068 02-15-2010, 11:23 AM I keep mine at the same temps as my kings, rats, corns 80-85 warm side to mid to lower 70's cool side...Humidity is what ever the room is as I don't even monitor it for them at all....only time it's higher is when the humidity in the room goes higher or I add new cypress in their tubs....or they do what they love to do and dump the dang water bowls or pile cypress in the water bowl....I swear I have never seen a snake that can pack a water bowl full of cypress like they can...But I never have had any issues with them and all their sheds are always complete sheds and they eat every time....
Do you have a better pic of the bull in question?? The lighting in that last picture makes it kinda hard for me to tell for sure.....
norsmis 02-15-2010, 12:17 PM Those pics are not of a "true" snow. It is an albino whiteside. There are true snows out there, anxanthic x albino, but those arent it. If yours has dark eyes, its a whiteside. If it has albino eyes, its an albino whiteside.

Ahhh ok that makes more sense lol. Here's a picture of mine, he does have normal eyes.

I really like the patternless and the hypo bulls so I'm thinking of picking up a couple of females, definitely a patternless and probably a stillwater hypo or multi-het female to breed to him eventually and make some het for ridiculously hot snakes :D

Cool, yeah that's what I thought. I've never had a problem with any of the colubrids shedding or anything whether they are at 10% humidity or 80% humidity lol. Normal AH in the room is about 40% and it's pretty close to that in their tubs.
and they eat every time....
HELL YEAH! My guy is still only about 50g and he is always ready to eat! I've never seen a snake his size with the food drive he's got lol.

No, that's just one that I came across on KS I'm gonna be keeping my eyes out at the shows this season I know there's a few guys that come to the Manchester show with some really nice bulls so I'll hopefully be able to pick up a female or two to pair up with mine in the future.
SNSnakes 02-15-2010, 04:12 PM As far as I know, all the bullsnake morphs are recessive. That said, there are a lot of 4 and 5 gene het bullsnakes out there! I've seen where 2 or 3 of the genes have expressed themselves...albino whiteside, snow, albino patternless hypo, etc.
I keep my guys at 78 on the hot spot with a night drop down to 70. I found that they tend to like the cooler temps unless they just ate.
Do you notice that your bull will "kill" it's rat by pressing it up against the wall of it's enclosure instead of wrapping and constricting? Mine do that and it's a pain to push the tubs back in the rack because half the snake is hanging out trying to get a "foothold" on something solid to press against...lol!

All of mine kill this way...my albino female is the fastest....once she's got her body out of the tub getting it closed isn't happening....

They do like it a little cooler but thats how I keep all my colubrids anyway. the ambient is about 70 with a hot spot of about 78 - 80. Mine have always done perfect with these temps.
anendeloflorien 02-15-2010, 09:01 PM Cool thanks for all the tips guys! I keep my snake room at around 75-78 degrees so I may not have to heat the tubs themselves much if at all.

Thanks a bunch Scott! I always know I can count on you when it comes to the colubrids :D I'm thinking I may try to get a nice patternless female and then maybe a pair of multi hets so I can try for one of them cool rainbow clutches someday. But :dunno: it all depends on what space and money allow for lol.
So far my bull is the only one of my colubrids to actually wrap and constrict the hell out of his prey. My big king will do the whole push it up against the side of the tub but when my little bull (still about 50g) gets food he makes this little honeycombed ball of squirminess for a good 5 minutes til he "kills" the f/t fuzzy lol.
FRoberts 02-16-2010, 11:59 AM Nice bull...the smash and grab....pushing up against all surfaces occurs with all my bigger pines...they constrict more as babies and juvies...my black pines use a misture of both...but I have seen them grab stuff and bang it agaist the enclosure wall....lol

My adult bulls would jsut swallow them live...

I have a few rat snakes that do that...hehe
SNSnakes 02-16-2010, 02:34 PM My adult bulls would jsut swallow them live...
I used to have a Western Hognose that would only eat live. Since they don't constrict at all, it was interesting to watch it eat...especially when it ate fuzzy mice backward! Squealing all the way down!

Had some of those that did it too.... especially the blacks....

:lmao: Yeah my youngest daughter was traumatized by a mouse squealing as the bull ate it....

You're welcome! Yep, the multi-het to multi-het breedings are fun! Just like Christmas, you never know what will pop out of those eggs!
norsmis 02-16-2010, 02:45 PM Check out Jim from Home Grown Herps. He has some awesome bulls. Been eyeing a pair of multi het patternless from him for a while!

Will do man. Gonna have to wait til I get a couple other things paid off first before I pick any new snakes up but I'm definitely getting a few more bulls here soon!

Also Jason Nelson from Envy Reptiles. He's working with Pituophis almost exclusively and has some wild stuff!

Oh yeah! Had a pair of Mexican pines from him for a few years. Good guy also!
anendeloflorien 02-21-2010, 06:54 PM Awesome thanks guys! Definitely a lot to check out on both those guys sites lol. I may just wait til the spring show up here and see whats around then (wouldn't really be able to have anything shipped before then anyways). Hopefully theres some nice stuff still available.

LOL - Jim, Scott's bulls are show offs - they always have to strut their stuff! They even make sure to poop at the front of the cage - and try hard to do it when I happen to be in the room!:lmao:

Ever hear them going? I used to hear my black pine female occasionally.... Now that was NASTY!

lol That big female gopher i got from Scott all those years ago, she used to strut her stuff to.. lol but she was also a side pusher as well.
Don't get me wrong, my guys do the same as well but I have this Albino male bull that just lunges out of the cage like a hungry boa after the rat and its gone in about 2 minutes. lol not a problem feeder at all.

oh yeah........the long, squirty sound that makes me cringe.......:yessir: Scott has pines, gophers and bulls - its like a sympathy at times.....:eek::eek:

No problem feeders here either. It's just that when they grab the rat, they don't coil around it. They tend to squish it against the tub wall while the back half of their body is trying to to find something else to push against!

you guys got pines?? damn I will need to talk to you folks. I need a nothern female. ;)
Actually I have you to thank for this Pituophis love I have. After getting those snakes after the Mankoto show all those years ago.. my collection has grown.
Heck, so has my MBK collection. I bought 3 from you that year, and now I am up to 7 and from what I have gathered, only 2 are not of your stock.

Cool! Thanks! I have Southern pines and Black pines, but no Northern pines. I'm going to try breeding one pair of the blacks and one pair of the normal Southerns this year. If I'm lucky, I may get a total of 6 eggs. Pines don't lay many eggs unless they're HUGE females! Mine aren't that big yet.
tricksterpup 02-28-2010, 12:10 AM lol Scott put me on the list for a Black this year.. :) I need another poor man's Indigo.

Ok, you're there. I don't know what she'll do. She laid 3 eggs last year that all went bad (male didn't do his job?) and I'm having trouble getting her back up to weight. The next month will tell.
