I have been using photoshop for a few years now to just cut/resize pics and recently started learning some of the basic features on it....like adding a name to the photos. So I was messing around today with some of the pics in the lightbox, normally I just take 50 pictures and get one or two that are not fuzzy out of focus messes but I started playing with adjusting the lighting and contrast feature. Just because I noticed unless the snake is in exactly the right spot to catch the light just right they look dark.
Now here is the same picture....would you all view it as an ethical thing to adjust the brightness of the picture if you are not adjusting colors? I just wondered what the standard is for this since I am just learning some of the features....

I don't want to adjust any of the colors since I think they are represented well with the correct lighting.
Okay any thoughts from anyone?

I don't think there is anything wrong with adjusting things to try and portray the animal/s as accurately as you can. Problem with that is you can be looking at a photo that you think looks right, but may look like you are falsely adjusting it on someone else's screen.... things can look different from one screen to the next.
I'd rather just see an unaltered pic myself. Having said that, I like the 2nd pic of that spider better....

Yeah Jeff, as long as you're trying to ACCURATELY represent the animal and what it looks like, I see nothing wrong with fiddling with brightness and contrast.
If you're doing it to fool people...then that's a definite no-no... I've seen quite a few what I deem "Solar Flare Pastels" for sale... If the animal looks like it's on fire...it's been messed with too much.
I don't see an issue correcting the brightness in that photo, I'm betting it's a fair representation of it! And it's HOT!

I think that's a good question Jeff. But even without PS I think you can change the looks of a snakes color I think. I think as long as your using it to make the snake look as it is and not what it is not. I see no issues myself using it :) Minor things here and there aren't a bad thing as I think they keep things real. Just my opinion :)

I think there is a difference between adjusting the quality of a photo (such as sharpening the image) vs adjusting the subject of the photo.

I think it's ok to adjust it for accuracy, but it can be overdone. I have seen some pics with way too much light added and I make a note of who the breeder is and I'm leery of doing biz with them. I loose trust in them whether they tried to misrepresent the animal or not. It's just hard to know.

That is my main worry over all. I would like to represent the animals as I see them but with each computer monitor being different you never know how you are representing them. I may just worry about my crappy pics to much.

As long as your are accurately representing the animals... then you should be ok. Lets say you have a very mellow albino... and you jack up the colors to make it a bright albino... then ya got probs... but if you take a dark image... and shed some light on it... then I dont see a problem... we cant get the exposure perfect everytime :)
I don't see any issue with adjusting the lighting as long as it is not changing the color of the snake from what it is and as long as you are not using it to sell the animal it does not matter anyway......
