View Full Version : Need help finding tubs
bondo 03-20-2010, 05:11 PM I decided to build a rodent rack and went looking for tubs. I went to Walmart, Farm and Fleet, 2 dollar stores, and another local store and could not find cat litter pans that would work. It seems that the Van Ness pans were changed. They have a weird taper to them and have a spot that dips down on the end. I don't think they would be tight enough on top for mice. Anyone have any ideas where I might be able to find litter pans that are straight across on the top?
2kdime 03-20-2010, 05:19 PM If your set on litter pans, HOME DEPOT had some KILLER tubs last time I checked. They were in a tiny little cat and dog section they had.
Another good choice are the cement mixing tubs.
JOHNS6068 03-20-2010, 05:23 PM I had the same problem finding tubs....all I found was those slanted ones as well...I found some cat litter boxs that work well for mice at the dollar store for about $3 bucks each....for the rats I just went with the cement tubs from lowes and home depot...

I am not set on litter pans. I will use whatever I can find. The cement tubs would be too deep for mice I think. I think they would have a tough time getting the food, especially the little ones. The closest Home Depot to me is about 60 miles. If I have to make the trip though I guess I will.
2kdime 03-20-2010, 05:41 PM I apologize, it was LOWES

Lowes is 90 miles away. You are making life harder. :lmao:
2kdime 03-20-2010, 05:48 PM I was hoping it would help....haha
Seriously though, it was LOWES.
You can find em online.
Petco around you? You can also order them online I think

Tim Mead 03-23-2010, 10:07 PM Home depot carries the mortar tubs we build around..Sister picked me up some from lowes and they were too thin and flimsey..
bondo 03-25-2010, 07:39 PM Thanks for the help everyone. It looks like I found some. A lady on Ebay has some. 20 tubs for $52 shipped. Hopefully I will get them by next weekend.
Pheatured Kreatures 03-29-2010, 05:02 AM I used the cement tubs for the mice and they are too deep BUT!!! I put some "aquarium" decorations in for them to nest in and one is a little turtle ramp thing-- its ceramic and is made to sit in the corner of a tank. I put those in the cement tubs and the mice can get on top of that and reach food just fine...
Good luck-- i found the hunt for cat litter pans a pain in the rear... now everything is the same...

MagickalMorphs 03-29-2010, 05:56 AM I'd try online if you can't find what you want locally. There are a lot of online discount pet warehouses. Or maybe someone around here has what you want and can hook you up?
ATLBalls 07-14-2010, 07:17 AM Would the medium size tub here work for breeding mice?

smilin-buddha 07-14-2010, 12:15 PM Check some of the hardware stores. I dropped by a local one. They ordered those mortar tubs. Home depot changed their manufacturer. Think they were tuff tubs

GPR,Inc 07-14-2010, 06:30 PM For our breeder racks we use the mortar tubs for rats. We use Pet Mate large cat litter pans for rat birthing tubs and mouse breeder tubs. They are the same design as the old Van Ness cat litter pans. We also use some Doskocil cat litter pans which are about the same thing. We buy all of ours off of Amazon.com and have them shipped by the dozens here to the house. I cant remember the Amazon store that has the Doskocil pans but KV pet supply is who handles the Pet Mate brand. We usually buy them 30 at a time and it runs us a little over $100 shipped. Hope this helps you out.

Aglyphic Creatures 07-20-2010, 03:36 AM I know this original post is older, but since it's been recently revived I have to suggest something that works well and hasn't been brought up is bus boy trays or what they call Bus Boxes. You can get them in different sizes/depth(5" or 7"). They're heavy duty and they have straight edges and some have handles to make pulling out easier. Our local Sam's Club sells these in 7" depth, but these can be purchased pretty cheap on line if needed.
Mortar tubs work great, although check around our Home Depot sells heavier duty ones then what Lowes has. And if using cat liter pans, the only ones I have found that are close to being squared off are the Petco brand ones.
sdreptiles 08-26-2010, 01:18 AM These are what I use for my rat holder bins

If you have a tractor supply company in your area. You can get them from them, or have them order them.
Back40Reptiles 10-02-2010, 07:22 PM Have you tried Amazon.com? They have free shipping sometimes.
CinderellaBoy 10-03-2010, 08:25 PM I actually found cat pans that were almost the same dimensions as the original Van Ness pans, except for being 1" shallower. This actually doesn't cramp them to much since I only use them in my birthing racks and there is only one mom per tub so it's no problem. Actually, it helps a little because once the pups begin to eat solid food, it makes it a little easier for them reach the food. I get mine from Family Dollar and Dollar General, and they are $3 or $3.65 depending on which store you get them at, but they are the same brand and made in the USA strangely enough. I did however, skip to several stores to find all black tubs for my rack , because I'm anal like that LOL.
