I dont know.....i was hoping it wasnt the same "power loss" like when they lost all those bloods. Power loss could mean alot of different things????

i heard from a friend of mine that lives in white plains new york tell last nite that they have been without power for 7 days it may have effected the hole east coast there was a bad storm there last week he said they got like 8 inches of rain and winds from 60 to 80 miles an hour they had power companys from all surrounding areas come to help i would imagine this storm could have taken there power out also this happened to them 2 years ago with a winter storm and they lost power for longer than a week

They lost a lot of animals last year too during the ice storm. I was talking to Kevin then and he said they didn't have the right generators and the ones that they would have needed cost around half a million dollars. I haven't been there since the wind storm a few weeks ago but I imagine that if they didn't have a sufficient generator set up yet they may have lost a few.

That issue was laid to rest.

Power loss means a friggin power loss Lance, we all lost power up here. I'm lucky enough that I still have a smallish collection so I was able to bring them to my parents place and keep them warm. NERD has thousands of animals.

chill out bro....just a joke.....lol,

wow...that does suck tho, i was hoping it wasnt true....they might have lost a large number of tokay morphs from what i hear.....

To build that kind facility and have that kind of investment into the number of animals they have there....and not plan ahead for proper power back up when it was built......:dunno:

You can get a Kohler whole house generator that is fully automatic and will power your WHOLE house for like $20-$25 grand. How big is this place? Half a MILLION for a generator backup sounds a bit far fetched! $50,000 sounds about right.

Sorry, Kara and Kevin were big time influences on me when I was just getting into the hobby, they've been friends and mentors so I just hate to see people trying to spread mis-information about them.
Yeah Kevin lost a big portion of his tokays a couple years ago, don't know about this storm though.

:dunno: IDK man, I guess they needed a pretty specialized setup, they've got a huge facility. I'm just going off of what Kevin told me after the ice storm in 08.

I agree :yessir:

We have a 200kw kohler for the farm and surrounding homes on the farm here and even with the very expensive transfer switch...I think everything was under $150,000....I'm sure they wouldn't need one that big though...:dunno:

This is our beast...it has a Detroit housing...Kohler Engine parts on the engine...But the actual engine is a 220 hp John Deere engine....500 gallon fuel tank will run the unit full power for 4-5 days depending on the load and all...

Don't really know the guys from NERD, but, I can say that it sounds like somebody is making excuses for why he doesn't have protection for his business investment. Forget about the fact that his business investment....He has living animals that are in his care and he does not have a way to care for them at time of power outage??? Sounds kinda shady to me.:dunno:

Not trying to make an excuse for anything, I don't control how they run their business or what they choose to spend their money on. Heck, I heartily disagree with them on a lot of the way they've chosen to do business I was only responding to the personal attacks made against them.

I wasn't talking about your comments. I was talking about the whole $500,000 generator thing that Kevin said. Here's a link to a nice 1.5 meg that is probably overkill and it's a portion of the cost...

So, it sounds like they HAVE (a) generator/s

Yeah boy! I do Audio Engineering and we run some huge sound systems on 150kws, I could only imagine 10x that power. I think we all(yes, including Kevin from NERD for those of you who are star struck) stretch the truth to make ourselves look better when something happens that is the result of our bad judgement. Just saying...

Not to get too far off topic but...

I have see half million generators and I doubt you would need one to power NERD, let alone a walmart sized box store. We ran a fire at our county landfill in a 40 x 30 metal building that houses 4 CAT Generators totalling over $ 2 million dollars. Can you belive a $ 2 million invesstment was protected by a metal building and not sprinklered? Make it ever better the CAT guys were there doing preventative maintenance when they cut a fuel line on accident.

It was actually a joke directed at NERD. I definately man up if I'm wrong. Personally if I was in his situation I would be laughing at myself and calling myself all kinds of names for not protecting my animals.

FWIW I dont even THINK Kara is there anymore, nor are her animals.

So if anything DID happen, I would suspect it's any animals that Kevin and the rest of the crew up there is working with.

Has anyone talked to them?

Not sure if this is talking about the one black out back in 08 or not, but this is taken of kingsnake, do with it as you will:
EXACTLY!!!!

Last year we lost power for 4 days in January's Ice Storm..... It was the WORST NIGHTMARE EVER!!!

I had 2 generators that could not handle my needs. WAY undersized.... it went down to 45F in my snake rooms ( it was 16F outside). I used every possible thing I could to heat the rooms ( I have 14 reptile rooms and a pet store ) until you could not get propane and then it really got cold. The state of NH was BLACK for the most part. I have never seen anything like that. You don't prepare yourself for such curve balls... "oh that won't or can't happen"... WRONG!

It did, I got my butt handed to me in sooo many ways. Amazing what it did.

Word to the wise... cold snakes with food in their guts = DEATH
Snakes get cold = Sterile snakes.
Snakes gravid while cold = sterile clutches
Incubator big fluctuations = BAD NEWS.

I got a much bigger generator now and can limp my way along whenever we lose power.

INVEST in a back up plan! As the weather seems to get crazier we are losing power more often. Expect the worst, I did not and I experienced a NIGHTMARE!!!

Better safe than sorry!

They lost power in January 08

So he must just be giving advice about that outage

thanks, i hope it was just 08. Would suck to have that happen twice....good find. Im thinking im going to get one of those honda quite generators. If the power goes out and i can it my oil heater running, i will be good to go if i can keep the room temps up until the power comes back on and would also be able to keep the incubator going also. thank god all my reptiles are in one room
