Awesome...How old is that guy...?
anendeloflorien 11-24-2008, 12:30 PM Wow, great lookin tort! I keep hearing what a terror the sulcatas can be. Is that true? How long have you had him/her for? They are definitely a beautiful animal but I don't know if I could be shackled to something with the type of environmental requirements that a sulcata has along with the tendency to destruction...... Still go you for being able to take care of them! And obviously quite well at that! :master:
I love those guys. He looks really good.

Varanus99 11-24-2008, 06:31 PM Good lookin tort. Those sulcattas get pretty darn big, dont they?
If hes 100lbs now how much bigger you figure he'll get? Ive seen some that look like tanks.
I asked a guy at a show once what is it like having a bunch of full grown torts in the house (he kept his indoors). He told me go get a furniture dolly, put 6 cinder blocks on it and ram it into every part of your house. :)
JOHNS6068 11-24-2008, 06:43 PM Nice looking tortoise. I have had a few box turtles, snappers and pond turtles but nothing right now. Turtles are always cool to have though i think =)

Bwah ha ha. I'm stealing that.
That's a gorgeous tortoise! What do you use to wall him in?
Desert 11-25-2008, 01:47 AM along with the tendency to destruction......
Destruction? Of what?
Matt_J 11-25-2008, 05:32 AM Desert... they tend to destroy EVERYTHING they come in contact with! My adults have pretty much done it all and eaten it all... I love 'em! But, they are a major responsibility. I had one female that used to push a cinder block around. Why? She was just ANGRY all the time! No kidding, they are a joy most of the time and a complete terror some of the time.

Larry 11-25-2008, 07:30 PM Thats one heck of a tort, a true HOSS. I'd love to be able to keep one of those in the backyard. I thought about getting a sulcata just don't have the space. Maybe I'll get a redfoot or something a little smaller..

the old furniture dolly piled with cinder block analogy of ancient lore. i've heard that one, but with eight blocks...

Desert 11-25-2008, 11:13 PM I think the point should be made that G sulcata make absolutely great pets, if housed properly. Inadequate housing of any species often generates mischaracterisations. The term 'destructive' is a mischaracterisation that places an unreasonable and illogical onus of behaviour on the animal.
For example, I don't see people lamenting about hamsters as destructive. However, if one were to house his/her hamster in a cardboard box along with the family's loaf of bread, the hamster would eventually 'destroy everything'. This phenomenon has application from hamsters to the big tortoises. House those hamsters and tortoises correctly, and enjoy their non-destructiveness.
Matt_J 11-26-2008, 04:53 AM Good point Desert... I've been keeping adult Sulcata since 1994 and this one particular female pretty much goes on a mission to 'destroy' the fence (seen in pic) after she lays eggs. Of course, this is purely instinctual behavior to 'leave' the area where her eggs were deposited. But, it's pretty darn 'destructive' when she does this! My adults (1.2) are housed on 1/3rd of an acre and that's far too small in my opinion for her in particular. Below is a pic of her. I have not accurately measured her in years, but she's likely close to the 100 pound mark now.

Where in Florida are you? I'm in Tampa and have four sulcata's. The temps have been getting pretty cold so I have been bringing them in. It's such a pain. I worry about them getting a respiratory infection though.
I've never been able to find information on how cold is too cold. I worry when it gets below 60... It can hit 30's for a few hours at night sometimes.

i have heard of people using heated horse blankets fro when it gets cld
Matt_J 11-28-2008, 09:56 PM I use Stanfield solid core fiberglass heat panels. My adults have a 4' W x 8' L x 2' H house to sleep in. I use a 3' x 4' heat panel from the opposite end of the door entrance and only plug it in when the night temps will be below roughly 45. In the 14 years I've been keeping Sulcata, I've never had a resp. infection or temp related problems. They are extremely cold hardy in my opinion. We once had frost on the shell of a female that failed to make it inside the house and she was just fine the next day. Thanks for the compliments on the gal I posted. Larry: I'm just outside Tampa.
Matt
Here's a pic of one of the first I ever hatched. 'Junior' turned out to be a girl and a honker just like her mom (Old Yeller who was a 100+ pound high yellow beast of a Sulcata. Another BAD attitude!)
