I cracked them over from paper towels (which they hate) to my modified monitor mix.

First babies in the bath. Its important to keep them hydrated. They dont always know enough to drink. Boneheads

More water ballet

Bush-League baby cage. 20 gallon long with home made top. You can see one of the little buggers on the right diggin'

The top. Very simple. Its a screen top with a light mounted on the inside and covered in plexi with a few vent holes on the cool side.

I weighed a couple of 'em. 4 grams each. Tiny little things.

I found some poop! At least a couple are eating! Herpers! We get excited about poop! They still wont let me see them eat yet!

I love that setup. Pure Bush-League which is what it takes brother. You've got all there needs covered to a T. I'm sure they'll be growing like weeds..

Its coco fiber and screened topsoil with just a touch of sand. I have found that pure dirt is a little heavy for the little guys to dig in. And doesnt hold moisture as well. So for the little guys I go with coco fiber, some dirt and a little sand. Its very light and easy to dig in. When they become big boys they get the dirt/sand/verm mix. No way Im filling a 6' trough with coco fiber! LOL!

True. They dig for the first month or so. I DID see a couple of them basking on top one day which was very exciting. And they are just starting to enter some of the other levels, but not much. Today when I went to get them for the bath all five were UNDER the stack, LOL! So yeah they wont be really using it that much for a little while but its their if they want it.

Yes, those are your two. I tattooed TKUL on their abdomen. Otherwise I cant tell them apart and your full name wouldnt fit.

Im still not 100% what Im doing with these guys. If I do let any go they are going to Bush-Leaguer damn skippy. Plus I betcha you have some tasty treats over there I just might be interested in. Just might.

Thats the whole ballgame, Boss. Does the cage do it's job?

My cage is not pretty. Not at all. Its an old fish tank with some old leftover plexi on it. And a $1.79 light fixture with an extension cord attached. Compliments of home depot. The cage cost me exactly zero dollars to put together since I had everything laying around. LOL!

But it does its job. It holds heat and humidity great. It allows a deep substrate so they can dig. Only thing I might do is cover the sides so they feel a little more secure. Besides that it works.

Ive seen gorgeous set ups that look pretty to the eye but dont do anything for the monitor. I have nothing against pretty cages but first should be the blood and guts. Does it work? If it works and you can make it pretty as well thats a bonus. Me? I just want it to work. Got no patience for pretty.

Love the pics. They seem to enjoy bath time and then playing in the dirt afterwards. :yourock:

So awesome!! They are so darling, how could you give them up!
I agree, the cage needs to meet the animals' needs first, then maybe look good. I think the cage looks great! It has those teeny babys in it!

After keeping black throats and savys. I could not provide the right set ups and care for them Like I wanted to.(Was young and dumb) . I did have a 4x4x8 cage filled with dirt in my basement. That's alot work carrying in and out HAHA .So I sold them, With the idea too someday have ackies.

Does the red are yellow ackies get bigger, or does it matter? Them are red one right? Thanks for sharing man looks like we have someone here in the BLBC for some good monitor advice. Great job with them. Them guys can be a lot of work.

The reds get a little bigger.

Generally speaking the yellows hang around the 16-24" range. With the males at the top of that range. Anything over 20" is a good sized yellow.

The reds can go 24"-30" and are more heavy bodied. Ive heard tales of a wild caught red at 36" but can not confirm that. Possible I suppose.

I hear ya about the big boys. I love all varanids but it is difficult to provide the proper environment for the biguns. And since Im into breeding I stick with dwarves and medium sized species. With the exception of the croc but hes a lone wolf and I really have no plans of getting him a female.

The largest monitor I would consider working with would have an adult size of around 3' or less. Maybe a tad larger. But I just dont have the space to keep trios of giants.
