I was wondering do any of you think it's bad to smoke around your snakes?? I'm a smoker and I don't smoke in the house but I was thinking about this tonight while out on the deck smoking.. LOL I have kids so I don't smoke in the house but I wondered if second hand smoke would harm reptiles ie.. snakes.. Anyway I wanted to get some BLBC insight on this..

While I don't smoke I would have to say no it isn't good to smoke around them just because of the simple facts about smoking in general. Good question though :)

I don't think it would be a good idea, I don't smoke, but if I did I wouldn't do it in the room where other animals have to inhale it.

Yeah I didn't think it would be good either.. But I had the same thought as EP about them not using as much O2..

I smoked like a chimney for fourt plus years, and I Have finally quit, and I'm sure it's affected my snakes to some point. But I don't see a difference. It CAN'T be good for them, but how smoke affects reptiles over time is anyones guess.

Seeing as how snakes only have one useable lung, I am sure it cant be good for them. I smoke too but not in the house. The wife would eviscerate me if I tried....

Probably not a good thing...wonder if we can get a BLBC grant to study the effects of smoking on reptiles.

I used to smoke and when I had a larger collection of mainly snakes I did smoke in the room. Not good, I know. But I was working full time, going to school and trying to take care of the animals and I didnt want to stop working, go downstairs, outside. puff a smoke and come back up. So I did the smoke in one hand snake in the other trick.

I didnt see any ill effects. But then again I dont know what was going on inside their bodies or what might have happened in the long run.

Now I dont smoke and I do not allow smoking in my herp rooms. I have lizards now and Id wager they are even more sensitive to toxins then snakes are as lizards are more of a pain in the tush in general :)

But I agree with everyone else. It cant be good obviously but exactly how bad it is who knows.

Well I would say it is a big no no. I am one of those "blessed" people with sensitive lungs. While I am not an asthmatic, I do have triggers that cause asthma symptoms. One giant trigger is second hand smoke. I know what it does to me, there is no way I would inflict that on my animals, regardless of what kind. For what it is worth, I react the same way to harsh chemical cleaners, and NO ONE would use those in a herp room.

I feel the same as alot here that smoking would be bad for them and I smoked for over 35 years and quit 9 years ago. Just NOT good in general for anyone or any creature

the fact that serptiles in general are low O2 consumers versus similar sized mammals may work for or against them.
they can apparently survive just fine on the higher CO2 levels (vs. oxygen in open air levels) that subterranean dwelling creatures seem to have adapted to. but replacing O2 with CO2, though eventually deleterious as the concentration of CO2 displaces the O2 to fatal levels, is not the same as replacing the O2 with a ****tail of air borne carcinogens, where long term damage is concerned.
they intake less breaths per minute to support their life systems than an equally sized mammal, increasing the time that the bad stuff can be absorbed, as the interval 'till exhale is longer, and we all know what happens when a semi-permiable membrane left exposed to high concentrations of stuff...
just my take, but i bet they'd run away to seek out better air if they could.

Not worth the risk...

If you choose to smoke inside though due to the freezing temperature outside... I would atleast cover the tops of their cages if you don't already have them in an enclosed rack setup.

I'm with CK on this one. I do smoke (trying to quit but the VA is being hard-asses now about giving out Chantix because ppl were committing suicide and they got a big lawsuit lol) but I never smoke around any of my animals. I did smoke a couple on the long ride back from Maine when we had our little pastel and big old normal in the car and one of the times I didn't even notice but my girl had taken out Mel, the normal girl, and she was sitting on her lap. Well, as soon as I lit up Mel started trying to get away as fast as she could (it could have been due to the window being open also but she was trying even before I opened it). So I would say based on that that it's definitely not enjoyable in any way for them and they would definitely rather avoid any areas where smoke is if they have the option.

BTW those "Censored"tails will get ya every time :ass:

Have you given the Commit lozenges a try yet? The VA will give you those. They taste like hell, you DO get used to it, but that's what worked for me. And I smoked for probably 43 years. Just a thought.

i think any respiratory system would suffer ill effects but just to be sure lets test it out on snake mites:machinegun:
