Ive been breeding mice and rats for local people for a long time now, and think
i want to do it on larger scale. If you were to start would you go and buy racks like ARS ones? Or is that pointless?

I would build at first...you can always add others later.

Agree with Jeff. Building is cheaper, and you can modify it exactly the way you want it.

Id build. The ARS racks are just beautiful but very expensive. If I was just getting started I would like to keep my costs down. Id build some racks, see how things go and invest the initial profits into bigger and better equipment.

Build first. Just because the locals buy from you doesn't mean you are going to be an instant hit once you start advertising abroad.
I tried starting up my own gig and it was beyond a pain in the ass. I had everything in place and word of mouth was going on , I was contacting locals and got 2 whole customers. Even those that knew me on-line looked elsewhere when I could easily offer EXACTLY what they were looking for and started bitching when they couldn't find it.
Its rough and starting as low cost as possible will work out for you better in the long run.

For some reason I feel like I've read somewhere that to breed animals by certain standards (I don't remember whose) you must be breeding in a non porous environment so that equipment could be sanitized? In that case using metal racks is required and the wood racks are not sanitary. If anyone has any idea what I'm referring to please elaborate.

Ok it's USDA standards and I'm trying to find what the standards really are...

Are you breeding these rodents to be ate by humans or snakes?
