Ok, I need to get a hook that I can use to actually pull a tic to the front of the cage or lift it up if need be. The only hook I have is a small one I use for my arboreals and I use it to tap the tics and just grab them by hand. I don't really have a problem with this method, as it's worked for me for quite some time, but my wife sometimes needs to work with a couple of them and she needs to be able to pull them or lift them with a hook. It may even make it easier to work with them when I mess with them. Anyways, what kind and size hooks do you guys use for big tics?

i would agree that may be the best to use theres some potential disasters coming with it when picking up a not so tamed tic lmao

I have a couple from midwest tongs and one from Damon but I use my old ghetto one more than any of them. Old hammer handle and a bent piece of some metal that I made years ago...

I don't have retics but I like to let the bloods and the diamond know before I grab them at a distance...

A big fishing gaft with the end of the hook filed down would handle the weight of a tic....something I always thought about at least.

I understand that. Always nice to let them know what you're up to.. I'd hate to startle any of my species besides the balls.. Especially the carpets and the tics.. No telling what they may do if they're not prepared to be grabbed.

I was thinking about getting the Midwest Python hook, but it's so damn expensive, and I don't really think I need something that long. It would mostly be for pulling them to the front of a cage. I prefer to pick them up with my hands anyways, and I don't think my wife would really be up to lifting them with the hook. Really just need something that I can use to work with them in the cage, that has maybe a 36" or so handle so I can tap them and not necessarily get the business end attached to my hand or arm.

I may look into the fishing gaft. I don't know if it will be easy to find one around here that I can really look at or feel before I were to buy it. There's not a whole lot of need for them around here. It's too bad I don't still live in S. FL, but if I did, I probably wouldn't have as many retics... Such is life.

i made a sweet hook some years ago with a metal hook and a long square edged mahogany scrap i had left over from a cabinet job. still looks and works great.
go to depot or lowes and get a bike hanger hook or the like.
you'll have to bend it outwards a little to change the open radius end.
get a fat broom stick type pole.
drill out one end.
insert the bike hook ...et voila !
once you know it fits good, epoxy that bad boy in and you're all set.
some of those hook things have that dipped in rubber finish, probably a little easier on the critters too.

Now that is a great ides CK. You could use dowels too couldn't you? Or are they not long enough?

closet pole comes in every length, and two different thicknesses...

I dont have any Retics... but I did build some hooks for handling larger 'hots'.... I got 3/8 inch solid steel rod... and heated it and bent a hook.... your not gonna bend it.... trust me.... Ive tried.

I also use it as my field herping hook / stump ripper... I have lifted some very heavy items...just using the hook end... and it never bent.... and should I someday get ahold of something that does bend it.

Back to the cutting torch to heat it back up and reshape.

here's mine gate,
hope this helps, the tip was a regular hanging hook that i straightened and ground down, of course, for bigger critters, you don't have to grind down the end. just drill out stick and epoxy in place.

I use a hook a friend of mine made out of a graphite golf club shaft with a titanium hook I mostly use it just to let them know I am not food.

I ended up getting a midwest one that a shop I go to sometimes happened to have in stock. It's got a fairly wide hook end and works pretty well to tap them or pull them to the front of the cage. Thanks for the suggestions, though. If I hadn't run into this one just sitting there, I probably would have ended up making one that'd probably work a bit better. The one I got looks like it's a golf club handle with a titanium looking hook end. It works, and was cheap enough for me to not mind buying it. Good enough, I guess.
