Dumb question

Can turtle egg offspring sex be determined by temps at the right stage like gator eggs?

HUGE congratulations ck!!! That is awesome! And, you have them set a titch different than the way I do, where I actually bury mine, but don't see any reason that being above wouldn't work! That is so exciting!!

CK, we incubated some boxie eggs just like out colubrids, and they all hatched. Don't know if that helps any, but thought I would throw it out there.

89 isnt to hot?????
I would think that 84-86 would be good.

Congrats ck...I don't know the proper temp but 89 like Jeremy says seems a bit high....I think 84/86 as well....but.....I......:dunno:

That temp sounds perfect for a higher girl/boy ratio..

here is a snip from tortoisetrust.org

WHAT INCUBATION TEMPERATURES DO YOU SUGGEST?

For most species, the best results are obtained if the incubation temperature is maintained between 86F and 88.7F. Also in this temperature range, a mixed sex brood is most likely to result. Tortoise eggs are subject to ESD or Environmental Sex Determination. In most cases, lower temperatures produce males, higher temperatures result in females.

What temp Jen....I'd think he'd get mostly females at 89....From the info you posted I'd use 87....

We incubate sulcatas at 84-86... (toss em right in the same bator as beardeds) and that should give a pretty equal ratio.:dunno:

That was my first guess....but from what she posted if it's accurate I'd use 87....but that is just from the info posted...if I had to guess I'd use the 84-86...regardless... I think they will hatch @89 ...but at 89 I'd ....if they are a TSD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temperature-dependent_sex_determination) species would think it would lean towards one sex...but it's all speculation since I don't know didly about hatching torts....lol

Wild, hope everything pops out ok. Nothing like getting some nice slow animals that want to keep you busy right out of the gate.

Don't most folks want a higher ratio of female torts? I would think 89 would be great if you want females.....

Dumb question
Can turtle egg offspring sex be determined by temps at the right stage like gator eggs?not dumb, yes. TDSD (temperature dependant sex determination)

Congrats! What sort of tortoise are those from?libyan greeks. genus and species, depending on who you believe, testudo flavominimaralis.

That temp sounds perfect for a higher girl/boy ratio..

jen,
we are shooting for girls with this clutch.
our other girl will hopefully lay soon, and i'm likely putting her clutch ( God willing there is a clutch !...) in the other incubator at 85. shooting for half-sib pairs...we'll see how that goes !

thanx for all the comments everyone !
this is a really cool thing for my wife ( not that i'm not totally pumped too, but hey, i'm a lifelong herp ! )
i hope we can hatch a healthy bunch for her.
they are rare, and being considered for CITES protection (not much value on the ground in libya...) last i checked, so it's important from that perspective too.
i'll keep you all informed,
ck
