Sputnik 11-26-2008, 08:42 PM Those are some top class shots.... very nice job! :yessir:
norsmis 11-26-2008, 08:45 PM Great shots! I guess I didnt realize how far forward they really are.....
FloridaHogs 11-26-2008, 08:46 PM Thanks Scott. I know I have a western one around somewhere, but can't seem to find it. :(
Has anyone had a reaction to a bite from a hog? I know mine had bit me a few times and never had any trouble......
FloridaHogs 11-26-2008, 08:58 PM There are varying reports ranging from no reaction to mild itching to localized swelling. I believe people have varying degrees of sensitivity to the "venom", much like people have various reactions to bee stings. This is just my opinion mind you.
Varanus99 11-26-2008, 09:08 PM Ive always heard the legends of the rear fanged hogs. Yet I always saw people free handle them and they seemed so docile I never gave it much thought. Ive actually never seen the fang with my own eyes.
Thanks for sharing those pics. Its cool to finally SEE it.
Kinda like Loch Ness. I know its there Ive just never seen it
FloridaHogs 11-26-2008, 09:26 PM Thanks V. I actually find it funny that one little bitty tooth like that is called a fang when you compare it to the giant fangs of the Gaboon Viper. They are really not in the same class, but carry the same terminology.
Varanus99 11-26-2008, 09:41 PM The first snake I ever held in my life was a hognose. Many moons ago. Whem TVs only had 6 channels and Space Invaders was high tech.
Do they use the venom to stun their prey? Is it potent enough to say kill a small rodent or frog? They dont constrict do they? I dont know much about hognose but I dont recall ever seeing one constrict anything. Is the prey still alive when they swallow it? Inquiring minds wanna know.
FloridaHogs 11-26-2008, 10:09 PM They swallow their prey alive. I do not believe the north american hoggie kill or stunn with their venom. Here is why...the female eastern in the above pic was a WC rescue. She was found at my Brother in laws house, and he is quite fearfull of snakes. He did catch her for me despite his fear, and called me. When I go there, he was standing in the middle of his yard holding her by her neck/head as far away from his body as possible (it was a very funny picture!) When I took her from him, she promptly regurged a toad she had obviously just eaten. When I say obviously, it was because the toad up and hopped away. She had COMPLETELY swallowed the taod and it was in her belly, and still hopped away when she regurged!! It was pretty amazing! I didn't release her due to a injury she received during capture. She recovered very nicely as you can see by the pics. All that to say, I do not think the Heterodons use their venom to stun or kill prey. Not sure about the Lystrophis (tricolors) though.
JChandler 11-26-2008, 10:13 PM I never realized how close to the slight possibility of danger I have been in
Really though great shots!
earthpig23 11-26-2008, 10:32 PM Wow excellent photography there Jenea. you can definitly see the fangs no doubt about that.:yourock:
FloridaHogs 11-26-2008, 10:38 PM Thanks Jeff and Mike....yeah I was a bit surprised that I caught the fangs when I looked at the photos.
BryonsBoas 11-26-2008, 11:43 PM Neat pics Jenea.
My Westerns grab the pink . fuzzy mice and hold them for awhile before eating. Not sure if they are waiting on the venom to work or not tho. When they strike , they hiss then ram their nose into my finger. To date they have never struck open mouthed or tried to really bite.
FloridaHogs 11-27-2008, 12:12 AM Only bites I have ever heard of were feeding error bites.
Awesome pics Jenea. Thanks for sharing them and giving us a great education.:yourock:

Steven_Kelley 11-28-2008, 01:27 PM Awesome pics Jenea Thanks for sharing!
anendeloflorien 11-28-2008, 03:01 PM Great pictures Jenea! They're so tiny, hard to believe that they're really considered "fangs", as you said before, compared to the fangs you see on puff adders, rattlers etc.... Someone posted a picture of a hoggies skull in the hognose section over at bp.net and you could just barely make out the little fangs in it. Thanks for the shots and the info hoggie goddess :yourock:
grunt_11b2007 12-01-2008, 10:29 PM Those pics are great.. Thanks for sharing and edumacatin me.. LOL Hoggies are cool..

Buckskin 12-19-2008, 09:05 PM That is something, I never new they had fangs that far forward. Thanks for sharing.
Rapture 12-19-2008, 10:48 PM Awesome pics.... are those the only teeth they have?
Jenea, I've read that the fangs are just a pair of elongated teeth used to puncture and deflate toads, as they will blow up with air to increase their size to become more difficult to eat. I'll look around and see if I can find that.
