View Full Version : Two possible additions to the forums?
BryonsBoas 11-28-2008, 08:23 PM I haven't proposed this to Larry or BT yet. I wanted a little feedback before I tossed the idea in the ring.
After a little chat with Big V in a thread , it started me thinking. We have a lot of talent & knowledge here and I'd like to see it put to the best use a Bush League member could.
Option 1) A how to / Care sheet forum. This forum would be used to showcase threads concerning step by step how to's for caging , racks etc with a potential care sheet forum written by our members.
Option 2) Non reptile related classifieds. This section would be for those of us that have hobbies outside of reptiles. Whether it be sewing dolls , crocheting, building models or if your an E-bay seller wanting to offer up deals for the Bush League.
Depending on the feedback depends on how hard I propose the idea. Not like Larry & BT won't see the poll.
Sputnik 11-28-2008, 08:24 PM I think the first is a good idea.... I'm not sold on the selling anything idea though.
BryonsBoas 11-28-2008, 08:26 PM I think the first is a good idea.... I'm not sold on the selling anything idea though.
Its just an option. If it is wanted it could always have a trial run to see if its worth the trouble. I just thought it would be nice if the crafty type members had another place to showcase their wares.
Sputnik 11-28-2008, 08:32 PM Like Jas and his dolls? :nono: LOL
I guess so..... I don't know, I've seen that before on a forum and it degenerated into people selling junk that in some cases didn't even work...LOL
BryonsBoas 11-28-2008, 08:37 PM LOL , it could but if we take out the whole E-bay thing , it might work. Run the same rules as the reptile classifieds. You make it , you sell it. Or , it could be a flea market/ swap meet type thing. Just an idea I'm running with.
147BOAS 11-28-2008, 08:38 PM larry and my self talked about turtles and tortoises
JChandler 11-28-2008, 08:38 PM I oppose non reptile classifieds...
But if it does get votes would that be the section for the spammers?
jasballs 11-28-2008, 08:41 PM I voted Neither. There are way to many(not really too many) breeders on this site. To have a care sheet. Everyone does things different as it is. Then there will be bickering back and forth about who is right and who is wrong! And I agree with Scott. No need for people selling or trading Sports cards for snakes Or phoney racks for snakes lol! It would be nice.. But I really think it would give you Mods Much more work to do...
I like the idea of the care sheets but would prefer not to see ads for junk, and on other forums it would be as bad as garage sale junk.
I think the Off Topic area for posting Jas's Dolls, other hobbies and interests is fine. I really wouldn't want to muddy up the waters and have people straying too far from the topic at hand -- reptiles. People have other interests -- mine is quilting, but if I really want to post about quilting (and I don't) I could find a forum for that. Maybe someday I'll post the snake pattern quilt I've been working on...but until it's finished I'll wait.
Just my opinion but I hope it helps.
Sputnik 11-28-2008, 08:42 PM I oppose non reptile classifieds...
But if it does get votes would that be the section for the spammers?
I wouldn't want non-reptile people signing up to the bush league to sell their stupid crap.... you'd get spam as well. Just not Bush League to me.... but I like the care sheet deal....
BryonsBoas 11-28-2008, 08:42 PM I oppose non reptile classifieds...
But if it does get votes would that be the section for the spammers?
It would likely be the spot most spammers would go for. Since I proposed it , if it does pass muster I'll take the responsibility of keeping up with it.
Southern Wolf 11-28-2008, 08:59 PM I voted for the "How-to"... and here's why. Everyone has interesting ways of doing things.... thats why I love going thru the caging threads... to see photos of how someoene else has done things... and then see if it will work for me... and try to re-create it.
Yeah.. there may be 5 people that submit a how-to thread on building an incubator... but you may have someone that does a huge fridge type.. one that does a cooler type... one that completely builds their own. Its just a good way to get ideas for your own projects.
I think I was looking thru Trempers site... and it gave me an idea for a cart... since the one I am currently using isnt working well for me.
Just a thought.
EDIT.... as to the care sheets.... I dont write care sheets... I do term papers....My last care sheet was 9 pages long.... but its because I do the research.. then combine what I find into usefull materials.
Tosha 11-28-2008, 09:04 PM I vote for neither.
People have other interests -- mine is quilting, but if I really want to post about quilting (and I don't) I could find a forum for that. Maybe someday I'll post the snake pattern quilt I've been working on...but until it's finished I'll wait.
I never thought I'd live to see the day when I would run into someone else that loved snakes and quilting as well.:rockon:
One is fine with me and like Jas said everyone has their own opinion but I have learned a lot from looking at other peoples collections. Like it or not, no reason to bicker over it, just my opinion. No to #2, if you want ebay go to the site! Dont think this place needs to look like a flea market! Most of the shows have done a good job at that......
I vote for neither.
I never thought I'd live to see the day when I would run into someone else that loved snakes and quilting as well.:rockon:
Well when you want to talk quilts and quilting let me know PM me or shoot me an e-mail tamanicole@comcast.net. :)
earthpig23 11-28-2008, 09:10 PM insted of a care sheet forum. I say a tips and tricks section. that way people can put there ideas on how they take care of this and that kind of like we have done already just organized in one place. burning PVC or how to switch to f/t that kind of thing prevents as jas put it...myway or the highway issues with some care sheets

JChandler 11-28-2008, 09:21 PM Not to start some big ass battle here but I think we can fit most of that into stuff already here...a few sticky's here or there, that's my 2 cents...

Thats why I was considering the extra forums. One of the sites ( non-reptile ) I'm a member of has so many stickys in every category you almost have to go to page 2 before you get to the threads.
I had this set up for 14 days but the Non reptile related classifieds is looking to be out. No big , the feedback is why I posted the poll.
Thanks for the participation.
* On a side note. I do realize that there is a care sheet mob out in the net but care sheets should be looked at as guidelines rather than hard & fast rules. Even with a care sheet / Tips & tricks type forum , the other species forums are there if anyone needs further advice for tweaking their care / housing past what the care sheet outlines.
jasballs 11-28-2008, 09:49 PM Sorry! I'm revoting!!! I didnt see the (how to ) part.. Thats a cool Idea.. It's the caresheet I'm not thrilled with.. I know I cant revote....

Voter fraud! :nono:
FloridaHogs 11-28-2008, 09:58 PM I like the DIY and the tip, tricks, and trade secrets. Don't care for the other classified section for the same reason others have stated. On another forum it was worse than going to a trailer park garage sale (no offense to anybody) People trying to dump broken stuff or worn out clothing...just aweful!

Yeah I vote for the DYI forum since we all keep picking up little things here or there no matter how long anyone does this....

For just a sec I thought you said " Sorry! I'm revolting!!!" LOL , was going to agree with you.
OK , I don't see this needing to go past tonight on voting. I see enough responses to get the info I need. I'll write it out to toss to Larry & BT and let them chew it over.
How To forum is a thumbs up to put to the Hoss's.
I'll suggest a Tips & Tricks but if someone wants to do a care sheet on a non main stream species I'll still suggest they go there.
I understand most of the people in here already know how to take care of their critters but I still think caresheets is a good idea. If you could set it up in away that everybody had access to it then others could add to an existing one, hopefully improving on it. It would surely help those of us who don't keep such a varied collection, as many here seem to have, to better understand the care before we dive into expanding. OK, I'm rambling again. Hope some of this made sense.
Varanus99 11-29-2008, 08:28 AM I guess Im in the minority I wouldnt mind a non-reptile related classifieds. Yes I agree it shouldnt be a junk pile.
Here's an idea, just throwing it out there. Maybe make it only accessible to members at a certain level? If thats possible? That would prevent Johnny Garage Sale from coming on here with his peanut butter jar collection from 1963.
Only reason Im even saying that is if I wanted a ball python, Id buy one from a BLBC member. To help support them and to some degree the site. I just picked up a couple of RR t-shirts. If I wanted hognose Id talk to Jenea. In other words if I need something and a BLBC member has it Id buy from them. Whatever it was. Maybe some day Ill want a quilt with a snake on it and I know who to see about that!
Maybe its too much work, I dont know. Maybe it would turn into a mess. Not sure. Just throwing around ideas.
On to the DIY, How To, Carehseets, what have you. I like stuff like that. DIY stuff is always fun to read. As far as the caresheets I agree there are plenty of them out there. And I wouldnt want to see the forums clogged with 10 stickies in each one. I think a big part of the BLBC is the interaction between members. But I wouldnt mind a few caresheets of, as you said Bry, the less commonly kept species. I think we are as a group a little too advanced for "How to properly care for your anole". No offense to anole fans, jusy sayin'.
Maybe some day Ill want a quilt with a snake on it and I know who to see about that!
This made me smile this morning. Thanks I needed that.

Although truth be told Id ask for a lizard
Mrs. Sputnik 11-29-2008, 10:25 AM I went with the care sheet ideas and agree on the NON reptile related as too much junk there
If we want to talk about other interests such as quilting or cars etc can do in
PMS or as Tama mentioned find a forum for that or do a members interest section but NO selling there

Exactly. Other interests can be covered in the Off Topic section.:)
JOHNS6068 11-29-2008, 01:15 PM I'm for the care sheets but not sure about the other one and how well that would go?
Tosha 11-29-2008, 01:29 PM I don't really care for the caresheet idea but tips and tricks might be useful -- I'm wondering if its possible to create a subforum under the major forums for these ideas - instead of a stickying them at the top making you scroll through a bunch of stickied stuff to get to the latest posts.
BTW -- if anyone is interested I've got about 100 yards of this fabric:
http://jetpythons.com/Snakefatquarters.jpg
OK y'all knew I had to do it.
Larry 12-03-2008, 05:49 PM The idea of a "how to" forum I really like. Great place for rank plans, building light tents, incubators ect. Yea I really that idea.
Nonreptile related classifieds.. We ain't no damn pawn shop..lol
:yessir:
KordeksKritters 12-03-2008, 06:30 PM I think a caresheets sticky at the top of each species, or an entire subforum within each main forum (like one in the "general lizards" category and one in the BP section, etc) called "caresheets" would be a good idea.
I don't think we have that "my way or the highway" attitude here towards each other, and seeing the care sheets might be a good way to let each other know what works and what doesn't for each individual person. It's the same idea as a DIY section (which we should also have), but for the specific animals. Keep it so that ALL care sheets go into that one place (whether it be a sticky or sub-forum), and have a "no argument" rule there.
I also think we should have a "you have to WRITE it" rule on the care sheets. If you don't write it, you should post a LINK to where you find it, say "this is what I do that works for me" and that is that. A lot of websites rely on Google ratings, and copying their care sheet, even giving credit to that person/site, screws them up. A link helps them in that regard though. I know if someone asked me if they could copy my care sheet and give proper credit, I have said that I want them to link to it, not copy it over. This could work for our own stuff too - if it is posted on your website, link to it here, and people can go on their own and read it, plus you still get the Google rankings.
If we divide it out into a sub forum, it gives those of us who are not interested in a specific species the ability to NOT have to wade through everyone's care sheets on X species when all we want are care sheets on Y species (if all caresheets were put in the same section).
I hope this makes sense. Now I guess I should go vote.
