i don't believe it was from moisture absorption, i think that once the egg dies, the gasses build up inside it. then, if there's a slight rise in temp...blammo !
don't forget chan, these are hard shelled eggs.
there was shrapnel all over the tub, so i washed off the other three with h2o and a splash of peroxide, and put them in another container.
we'll see...

That was a case where the whole clutch went, but it was pretty questionable right from the get go, and didn't think that they were going to make it anyway. I wouldn't worry about the rest, as your male has sure been doing his job!! I also am not sure about there being a point where it stops, seems to just happen when there's a weak spot in the egg anyway. Have had eggs that were bad that didn't pop, and when they went over a month over where they should have hatched at the very latest I brought them out and very gently cracked them. then about lost my lunch, then showered for an hour, lol! But if they are still in a good time frame (which yours are) I would just let it ride and cross your fingers for the best!!:cheers:

I think your right the rotting produces gas and builds up pressure in the hard shell. I had a similar thing happen. A couple months ago I found a single mud turtle egg in on the bottom of the aquarium, figured it was drowned, so set it by the aquarium, then last weekend I had some company over and was showing them the egg and went to set it back down and as soon as it touched (hit) the table it exploded, luckily didn't splatter on anyone, but it still was a smelly mess to clean up.
Best of luck with the rest of the eggs, hopefully they will still be OK.

honestly, i'm thinkin' she may have needed to clean these "leftovers" out of her system before moving forward with this year's "good" stuff.
in reality i was surprised she laid so soon, not because i had any precedent to go by, but because the other female started showing pre-lay behavior before the one that laid.
we'll see how things unfold.
i'll keep you guys abreast.
