I'm thinking about getting one just wondering what everybodies thoughts are? Are they really worth it? What type should I look for?

I'm sure their nice to have but I ain't paying a couple grand for one...I'll keep doing what I've been doing and use the ol hand - Bush-league style...I'd take that couple of grand you'd spend on the ultra sound and buy another snake - But that's just me...

I've seriously considered one myself just to keep from wasting time on boas I think may be gravid.

With balls I think it just depends on what level of the game you choose to play in. If I dropped 25k plus on a banana male I would sure be caughing up the extra cheese for that glimpse inside...:D

watchin' behavior is alot cheaper. and although not as precise, is reasonably indicative of the female's state.

back in college i would wait until the females were in a state of intoxication, then by simply watching their behavior, i could guage their degree of "receptiveness", i found this method to be quite accurate.

I let my fingers do the walking and if you know your animals you can tell what you need to by that! Ultrasound and Bush League dont sound good together unless the ultrasound you speak of is a 3 million candle power spotlight held up to the snake in a dark room....... :)

For egg layers maybe. I know a couple guys that lost boas last season from retained ova that rotted inside. I have a couple girls now ( boas ) that an ultrasound would answer a question or two on.

Even if you know your animals , the info you could get from a quick ultrasound could prove to be valuable.

Unless you know how to read them correctly, I think it is a waste of time and just a best guess at what you are seeing.

Dr.Seward did an ultra sound a few years ago on a friend's bps, said they weren't gravid based on the ultra sound.... well within a short period of time he ended up with 4 - 6 clutches.

the units are probably reliable...those interpreting the data are the ones that probably aren't. once it becomes more of an art than a science, why spend all that money on the science aspect ? spend your time observing the beasties and develop that art instead, works even when the power's out !

interpreting those things is part art, but once you got that down, i'm sure it can be a useful tool. not something that any of us will likely need. it would have to increase your output quite significantly to justify it's cost. besides, the whole idea really doesn't resonate "bush league" !

Absolutely, I average 3 lockups per female. 6 females per male. Thats 18 locks per male. If I could cut that down to two lockups per male. That would give me 3 more females bred with that one male.
2 locks per female, 9 females bred, still only 18 locks total.
3 females 6 eggs average each. thats 18 more eggs from that same one male.
If you have 4 males thats 72 more eggs. No extra work for your males.
Dam If thats not Bush League it should be. I think I've talked myself into getting one :lol:

Squeezing them sure would be quicker at this point. I'm spending 10mins on a single girl but it's getting better the more I play with it.

All this time, I thought you could just run the probe in the area where the follicles are and a nice big image would pop on the screen, showing a nice crisp image of the developing follicles.

Well I'm here to tell you, thats not the case. You really have to know what the heck you're looking for.

Ok well the first tip we can give you is having two people helps a LOT!
2. Dont make the screen to light because you wont be able to see the follicles on the screen, we like ours darker.
3. Dont focus it in too much we keep ours focused all the way out.
4. If you have an animal setting dont set it on a small animal set it on 'dog' if you can.
5. move the probe up and down on the side of the snake until you see the follicles if they are there.

Thats about all you need to know. But the biggest thing is having two people, one that holds the snake and one that ultrasounds!!

I'm working on getting one myself mostly just for the time it saves breeding my males. I can move the male sooner knowing the female is done to a different female. It cuts down on breeding time which keeps the males healthier and able to breed more girls. Plus it just takes the guessing out of it...especially when you have as little time as I do to focus on everything the girls are doing...just pull them out along with the ultrasound and see where things are at.

Hey Larry are you using the gel to ultrasound the snakes or are you puting them in water? We fill a 28 qt tub about a third full of water and hold the area we're ultrasounding under water. It's a lot quicker and cleaner than the gel.

Play with it (the ultrasound) and you will figure out which buttons to push when you fire it up and be able to do a snake in about 20 or 30 seconds. We ultrasounded 83 girls last Saturday, it didn't take long at all.

Before I read everyone's replies and my opinion is skewed, I'll say they're useful...and if you had a big collection, it would make a lot of sense.

I had access to one in 2007 when a vet buddy of mine was the on-call guy for a clinic that offered services for horse breeders. He's a herp vet, straight up, so he brought it over a few times and just having it there a few times was enough for me to figure out where everyone was. Had a great season...knew which females to get bred, which to wait and keep watching.

The educational aspect, what I learned from it, was probably the biggest benefit. Once you KNOW for sure where a female is, you almost automatically start looking at their behavior and taking note. Then, even when the ultrasound is gone, you still know what that coiling around the bowl means, etc.

The only drawback for us was it was a poo hazard...big time. They're in the water, you're rubbing something around on the belly, you hold them still - they struggle. They go. Not a big deal, just know it will happen sooner or later. :)

I fed my stuff through that season and Mike (my buddy) didn't usually have any trouble seeing what we needed to. If that was ever a concern, it was usually just more a concern of upsetting their stomachs and making them regurge.
