I just love questioning some of these so called "breeders" about their animals only to get a single sentence response with no information. In one inquiry i made on KS i asked a guy (that i never herd of BTW) about a weight and a price on a lemon blast. Here is the reply sent back IN IT'S ENTIRETY: "don't have a weight.". What the piss is that!!!!! DON"T HAVE A WEIGHT??????? Garbage absolute garbage!!!!!

They can afford to produce morphs like a lemon blast (or buy them), but can't afford a digital scale? What are those now, twenty bucks?

That's a pet peeve of mine, the no scale thing. A scale is a very important part of any keeper's toolbox.

befor i started breeding different types of reptiles, i did see how some of the market was big on weights and others weren't....I get tons of emails about crested gecko weights???? most of the rhac gecko emails are about weights now that i think about it....

I see its a big deal in balls too...why, when buying any other breed of python, they dont talk about weights???? womas, carpets, GTP, ring pythons, burms ect.... never hear about people caring what the weight is has long as its healthy, eatting and all that....so why such a big deal with balls???

People want a weight, so as to know how big it is.... how far away it could be from breeding or just to get idea on how big it is based on it's age.... is it small for it's age for example.....

I guess im only seeing alot of this in ball pythons only and not in the other python....so why is it not a big deal in the other pythons then???....just trying to understand this more...

I dont think the weight was a big deal. The way the person was treated is more the issue and I completely understand why. Customer service. Plain and simple.

Weight is a great indicator of how well an animal is progressing (in general) and of course can give you an idea on how soon or long it will be in order to breed them. If your buying a female for example and want to have the best potential to breed as soon as possible, would you go with a 07' female that is 900g or the 08' at 1200g?

People like that don't last long. He definitly needs to learn a thing or two about customer service. And postal scales are cheap on Ebay, that's where I got mine.

You would be surprised. There are some big breeders out there that do this crap too.

I would say 90 percent of the time you can look at any other python or boa and tell from the age and picture approximately the size, or even the question what is it eating....a ball python not so much at least to me, I have adults and 600 gram babies eating small rats....just easier to ask but I agree that the seller should at least make an effort...they listed it for sale it isn't like someone is twisting their arm to sell it.

Just my two cents, but as long as they are both eating, I would actually go with the older, smaller female, because I believe that with her age, she is less prone to going off feed, and potentially making it to breeding size. I have seen alot of 2 year olds stop at that 1200 gram mark, and not go. However that is a tricky question.

In regards to your original thread, in light of all of the conversations in this thread, I do believe that it is all about customer service. He doesn't need a scale to tell you politely that he doesn't, but still offer some type of comparison to give you an idea, or at least offer some feeding history.

Bill,
I actually never weigh anything for shipping, as I have very rarely ever gone over the dimensional weight requirement for a box. Therefore my small boxes are always estimated at 4 lbs, and my medium boxes are always at 9 lbs. That's just what I do, but to each his own.

For larger animals I have taken pictures with an item like a pop can for size reference, everyone out there has access to them and generally they are all the same dimensions so it makes it easy for someone to grasp the size of larger animals....telling someone that the snake is 10 pounds will help but seeing it next to something you recognize is always a plus for me
