I just realized something I dont think Ive seen anyone in BLBC mention that they have a green iguana. I understand that most of the folks here are breeders and iggies arent exactly known for their captive breeding abilities. Just wondering if anyone still keeps these guys.

That is not to say I think they are good "pets". As a matter of fact I consider them an intermediate to advanced species that are often picked up by well meaning but novice keepers who are soon over their heads. A huge lizard that needs and enormous enclosure, a well planned diet, funky lighting etc.

I had one many years ago. Most lizard fans go through their iguana phase. An adult male in prime shape is really a magnicifent creature. So I had my little baby, who quickly became a big baby, and then a VERY big baby. Eventually I couldnt house him any more. I gave him the run of my reptile room. Set up some branches and basking shelves for him. Stuff to climb on. What a terror he was. I know some iguanas are docile. Well, adult males can be a little pissy. Soon as I came in right with the head bobbing. And this one would bite ya if you gave him the chance. Not a nice fella. He was fun but a bit of a handful.

He ate EVERYTHING! Yeah yeah I know the caresheets say dont feed them meat or dont feed them this/that. Mine ate everything in sight includeing mice, rodent blocks he would steal from the top of the bins, all manner of fruits/veggies. Just anything.

I finally gave him to a friend when my snake collection got too big and his antics and destruction got to be too much. He still has the lizard. That thing has to be over 10 years old by now.

I still like iggies but doubt very much I would have one again. Unless I had unlimited space/money and could REALLY set them up right.

I use to have one, raised it since a hatcling. Turned 2 years of age and found out it was male and it became aggressive like most male igs.. I ended up having to get rid of it when I moved because I didnt have the room anymore..

I didn't but my brother did in the mid-late 90s. It jumped off a high shelf one day and broke all of its legs, we put it down.

Had one a few years back a guy we knew came to us with this half dead iguana he found on a neighbors roof in the middle of July. So I nursed it back to health with baby food and pedilite per my vets suggestion. Then mixed in veggies that I pureed for the guy. After several months of rehab he quickly came around. Didn't really want to keep him due to space issues so we found him a good home with a guy who had several other iguanas.

Thing was mean as hell even after bringing him back from the walking dead....

I don't have any but if I ever moved to a warmer year round climate I'd love to get a few diff species. Not too big into the greens, but I love some of the others.

I dont see to many actual herers with these much anymore. Of course i know there are still plenty of keepers out there with them that have no clue what tey are doing but it seems these green beauties have been replaced with other species

I had one back in 1990 but they are cool but just not for me. This is one of millions running around eatting everything in the Keys.

You know what's sad, I was in SuperPetz the other day. They had what was advertised as an iguana, and it was a CWD. I tried to tell the staff, but they were clueless.

But I'm starting to see CWD's everywhere, and I'm wondering if they're becoming the next "iguana" for novice reptile owners.

I had one years ago that was a rescue. He was a large adult and very tame. We had him for a few months before finding a home for him(I was still in the army). When we had him, he had a his own bedroom. I wouldn't mind having another one, I would definitely need to have more room to setup a good enclosure for them. I see way too many kept in severely cramped enclosures.

Yes, so many have been rescues. Ive rescued a few a kept them for a short period of time before I found good homes for them.

The options are either build a gigantic enclosure, no easy task. Or iguana proof a room and let him go nuts. Also with its problems.

I consider them a rather advanced species often sold as a good beginners pet.
