View Full Version : Baby ackies have started hunting

Saw the coolest thing this morning.

I have some cork bark pieces in with the hatchling ackies. Some of them have little holes in them. So today I walk by and I see half an ackie hanging out of the hole, LOL! Now I know these guys love tight spaces so I figured he was just trying to wiggle in there. But its obvious to me he cant fit in that tiny hole. Hes workin' hard on it though, legs pushing like mad tail flopping around.

Then he backs out and he's got a cricket in his mouth!! Hot damn! He was hunting and must have either chased the cricket in there and went to get him or was exploring holes for food. This is the fist time I have actually SEEN this group of hatchling eat. I KNOW they are eating by how they look, presence of poop and the food is disappearing. But I havent caught them yet. Whoooo!

So he takes his cricket to the top of the Retes Stack (All Hail) and procedes to teach it a lesson. The killing station. They have started using a killing station. Awwwww! Baby's first killing station! Reminds me of my alligators first death roll!

Couldnt get to my camera in time. But just had to tell the story. I got at least one BMF in the bunch :wamma:

Thats why I always stress setting them up right. When the cage is correct you get to see all this cool stuff. When they're not set up right you may as well have an anole cuz they really arent going to do much.

That's awesome. It's always nice to actually get that confirmation that they are eating and doing the stuff we assume they are doing.

Please, when they start that conga line, you MUST get pics.

Congrats man!

You have a gator? Gotta see that!

Not any more. I did many years ago.

Without a doubt a baby gator is about the coolest thing on the planet. But I had to give him up as I could not house even a half grown gator. I was young and impetuous at the time. An opportunity arose to get a baby gator and even though I knew I shouldnt and it was kinda sorta illegal I did any way. Not proud of myself and I wouldnt do it again unless I had the permits (if possible) and could properly house a full size gator. Shame shame on me.

But....OH MAN WAS IT COOL WATCHING IT DEATH ROLL!!!!!

I have some pics of it. Not on the comp. Regular pics. I should have them scanned. I think you'd get a hoot out of them. Baby gator in the bathtub scrub-a-dub-dub!

I'd love to get me a gator. It's so hard to resist the urge every time I go to a show with the hundreds of them for so cheap. They are so cute. Must not get gator until I have proper space and money for food and stuff! They have like 10 of them in a 40 breeder at this shop I go to sometimes.. it's sad to see them all cooped up like that, but it is fun to watch them eat crickets and stuff. If I ever get the space, I'd love to get a dwarf caiman. Oh, oops, this was about ackies, wasn't it.

Them ackies are so cute. If you can bear to part with 1, it'll have a good home at my house.

I'll take a pair. I figured you wouldn't have enough for a pair for me after the other 2, and keeping a few. You won't be keeping any? Why so? Is it the flavi/argus you got coming? Or did they arrive already?

Its a combination of things. I have 2 trios of yellow ackies. 2.4. I was going to try to set up a third group. But I have too many other things I wanna do and my space is limited. 6 adult yellow ackies, I think, is plenty for now. Plus I can always make more :)

Yes the flavi/argus have arrived so I will need space for them.

AND I got two leads on a trio of red ackies which I have been meaning to get forever and just never got around to it. Well, thats partly true. I have seen some for sale but they havent thrilled me. Ive seen some really RED reds and those are what Im waiting for.

Plus I want to build a larger cage for the Kimberlys. Their cage is good but I want to give them more height.

And if that wasnt enough I have 10 baby leopard geckos I cant get rid of for the life of me.

So with a bit of a heavy heart Im gonna let all these guys go. So thats 4 spoken for, one still up for grabs. That is, of course, if they all do well and have no problems. If they arent perfect they dont leave my side. So far so good though.

Oh, did I mention every pair of yellow ackies comes with a free normal leopard gecko? LOL!!

Not as a rule, no. Im old school metal, punk, thrash and some hard rock. However some of the rap songs I find amusing. Thats one of them.

If you wanna know the background I was a huge fan of Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). A tag team called the Gangsta's used to come out to that song and bust the place up. And it kinda stuck with me.

But no as a rule I am not a rap/hip hop fan at all.

LOL. Really desperate to get rid of those leos arentcha? I don't blame you. I'm thankful I don't have to do crickets for my geckos anymore, except for a treat. The Green Tree won't eat them anymore either.

Sorry you've gotta sell them all, though. It would be nice to be able to keep atleast a couple of the first you produced.

Oh Ive produced them before. These were the first this particular season. All the other clutches went downhill.

I had a horrible season this year. I lost a ton of eggs. Just bad bad bad. This small clutch from a young, small female was all I had left. If these didnt hatch I would have a big fat ZERO monitors produced this season.

But they came through like troopers and I got a little attached to them. I think we're all guilty of that at one time or another. But after more consideration its for the best if I let them go. Im good with the 6 yellows for now. I would like to get up to 6 reds as well. Then if all goes well who knows I might add another trio of red or yellows.

And stop trying to talk me out of it!! Dont get me all emotional or NOBODY is getting any lizards! Ya hear???

Thought Id give a little update on these guys.

They are really coming around and getting their "monitor balls" so to speak. When they hatch they spend the first few days or even a week pretty much hiding 100%. Occaisonaly you may catch a glimpse at one but as soon as he sees you he's gone. Then little by little they start to get bolder. At least thats how ackies go. Adult ackies could care less. You can bang pots and pans over their heads and they'll just look at you.

The babies are eating crickets now in front of me. Im pitching crickets in there and they are grabbing them as soon as they hit the floor. Even had a tug of war going on until the cricket got ripped in half! Good sign.

Of course they still hide in their burrows a lot but thats the nature of the beast.

I got one guy in there who I have my eye on. Little bit of bully. Not so bad yet but hes on probation. Id bet my last dollar he's a male but you really cant know for sure for quite some time. Hes the best eater so far. I dont know where's putting it but hes pounding those little crickets.

Oh and in other news the Kimberlys managed to unscrew one of their light bulbs again. How do they do that????

Another update. Just cant help it. Lovin' these guys.

When they hatched on Nov 17 four of them weighed 3 grams and one weighted 2 grams.

Today I decided to dig them up, give them a soak and check on them. I dont see them that often they are buried a lot. Put them on the scale and I have four at 6 grams and one at 5 grams. Must be the little guy.

All but one have doubled in weight in 23 days or so. And the little guy actually had the fattest belly of them all.

All is going according to plan do far. They are a little freaked out and I HATE to disturb them but I really wanted to give them a soak and just do a general health check. Make sure nobody was getting beat up or missing toes. All is well on the western front.

They should double again in the next 2-3 weeks.

WOW what an ordeal that was. Its hard doing that by yourself.

I weighed two of them. They both came in at 10 grams. Nice. Up 4 grams from the last weigh in. Progressing nicely. I think I got the two biggest so the other guys I would guess are in the 8-10 gram range. Not bad. No question they are feeding and feeding well.

Yeah overdo.

I suck at pics, got a bad camera thus I dont take many. Beyond that I truly HATE to disturb them. They are totally buried most of the time. Which is great. I caught a few of them in and under the stack so I figured a good time to terrorize them.

Im very happy with the weight gain. They've more than tripled since Nov 17. They are eating insects as fast as I can stuff them in there.

Just for giggles, yesterday i decided to count. I never do this but what the hell Im a silly nancy pants. I counted out 30 crickets. Today I tore the cage apart. I found uno. Cool :D

Oh, plus a plate of turkey down the hatch. I always have the turkey just in case the tough guys get all the good crickets the not so tough guys still have something to eat. Although based on their appearance I dont think I have a dominance problem in there. Everybody looks good.
