View Full Version : Flavi/Argus in the house
Varanus99 12-05-2008, 08:57 PM Well they arrived today. All around good job by Repti-Racks. I know this isnt the BOI so Ill just briefly say they did a fine job. Good communication, shipped on time, nice packaging, all that good stuff.
As usual here are some bad pictures of nice lizards:

Thing #1 and Thing #2 are just fabulous. I love'em. Such patterns. They for the flavi pattern and a little argus dude. They already started eating! Normally I wait 24 hours before I offer food but these guys looked so prime I said what the heck cant hurt to try. They each pounded crickets about 10 minutes after they arrived. Gotta love that.
Shorty is gonna take a little TLC. He has not fed yet. No surprise. I have him a seperate cage so he doesnt get bullied by his larger, stronger siblings. He looks ok. He's a little weak I can tell. But he doesnt look beyond saving. His eyes are clear and bright. He moves ok. Hopefully he will come around. If I get him up to size I will attempt to put them all together and raise them as a trio.
Of course my thermostat in my second lizard room when kapoot today. VERY NICE! So I had to run to Home Depot, get the new t-stat, crawl through the attic and rewire it. But all is good I got a much better stat now. I can do night drops if I want Wheee!
So their they are. Finally got lizards that tripod. Cant WAIT to see them do it.
norsmis 12-05-2008, 09:00 PM V those are so freaking cool!!!!! And I am digging the names! Thing 1, Thing 2, and Thing 3!!!! Awesome!!!!!
CONGRATS BRO!!!
They are awesome! Love the pics...I'm sure we will be graced with more right? LOL Shorty is adorable and I am really hoping the lil one makes it with your TLC.
Congrats again on their safe arrival. Has the GF seen them yet?

Thank you. They are really cool. Im blown away by them. Ive always wanted flavis but to be honest I really cant afford them right now. 2k for one lizard is a bit higher than I am willing to go.
So I got the next best thing. Sure they have some argus blood in them but not much. According to the breeder they were produced from a flavi x flavi/argus and I believe that. I would SWEAR they were pure flavis if I didnt know better.
JChandler 12-05-2008, 09:05 PM Congrats V and Shorty looks alert in the pics, I hope all goes well with him!

Thank you. No she hasnt. She will be here tomorrow to meet the new kids. These have a little attitude so I dont know if they will go over as well as the leos, LOL! But they are pretty she will like that.
I got my fingers crossed for Shorty. Hes got his own cage and I covered 3 sides with cardboard so he cant see much and get scared. Hopefully they will make him more secure. I gave him some water by hand and he did drink some. Hasnt eaten anything yet but Ive got my ground turkey under a hide trick going so we'll see. Best thing I can do for him right now is leave him alone.
Varanus99 12-05-2008, 09:08 PM Congrats V and Shorty looks alert in the pics, I hope all goes well with him!
He is alert. He picks up his head and tries to get away when you hold him. Good sign. Hes just not as fiesty or aggressive as the other two. Hes weak. If you held him you could tell. But Im gonna be all over him. Ill feed him with a spoon if I have to.

Got to give him a chance and sounds like his is in extremely capable hands so if anyone can do it you can....bet if he comes around he will be beating the other two silly in a matter of months.
norsmis 12-05-2008, 09:16 PM God luck with him V and like Jeff said, he is in the best hands possible! Keep us updated (like I need to tell you that! I am sure we will being seeing lots of pics of these guys!)

Thats usually what happens with runts or otherwise imperfect animals.
I have a female ackie who has some problems. She doesnt shed well, she walks a little funny. Not as nimble as the others. But she eats, digs, does everything she is supposed to do. She was one step away from the freezer before I grabbed her and said let me try to work with her. I babied her for months. Hand fed her ground turkey twice a day, did horrible things to crickets so she could catch them, sliced up frozen pinkies with a razor blade. You name it I did it.
Long story shorter the only yellow ackie clutch that hatched for me this year was hers. Go figure.
JOHNS6068 12-05-2008, 09:22 PM Love the pictures!! Thanks for sharing them :yourock:

I played with the settings a little. Took some with the lights off. Tried a couple with no flash. I still suck but my suckiness has improved thanks to the fine folks of the Bush-League! Diehard! :yessir:

Thanks CK. How's your little crestie doin?
jknudson 12-05-2008, 10:00 PM Congrats V! Those little guys look awesome!
Are you going to try and see if the little one will eat on his own, or are you going to assist him by syringe feeding with a slurry of pedialite and ground turkey, baby food, or something of the like? I've had to do that for rescue leopard geckos that were emaciated and on deaths door, and it worked quite well.
Best of luck from them!
Varanus99 12-05-2008, 10:15 PM JK, that would the absolute last resort.
I really do not like assist/force feeding. I would much rather use some coaxing to get the animal to eat on its own. I havent had much luck with assist feeding monitors in the past. Ive had a couple that came around but most just continued to go downhill and I lost them.
I used to work in the pet trade. Lots of monitors came in looking like walking death. And I would try to rehab them. If I could get them to take even a little food on their own they would usually come around. Slowly, but they came back. Whenever I used a tube or otherwise forced them to eat it rarely went well. Got lucky once with a blackroughneck, cant remember that many others.
Plus this guy is not emaciated. What happened was his yolk sac was twisted up in the egg so he didnt get to absorb all his goodies. He was born undersized and weak. But hes 6 weeks old now and the breeder has told me hes been eating small crickets and very small pinks. Which makes sense. If he wasnt eating he's be long gone by now. Of course shipping and a new home is a stress that hopefully he can overcome.
I offered him some water in a bowl and he no likie. So I lightly sprayed his mouth and he drank. Not just lapped up a few drops, he drank. He was thirsty just not bright enough to drink from a bowl :).
My next move was to offer him some crickets. Zero interest so I took them out. I dont like to leave live insects in with baby monitors especially special needs ones since they crawl all over them and harass them. So then I put some ground turkey in a shallow dish under a hide. Thats my little trick and it works a lot. That way he can eat without being out in the open. No vitamins or calcium either. That will come later. For now I dont want anything messing with the smell of his food.
If he still doesnt eat Ill physically place him in front of the food and rub a little on his lips. Sometimes they lick their lips and get the taste and that kicks them in. Then he may take a bite and walk away. So Ill bring him back and try again. Ive done this with lizards and got them to eat a decent meal just be dragging their sorry butts back to the food dish.
Ill try everything in my power before Ill force feed. Just not a fan of it. Yeah, I know sometimes its necessary. But based on my own experiences its tricky business. Especially with lizards. Right now I just want to make sure hes hydrated and warm. If so he should start eating on his own
jknudson 12-05-2008, 10:38 PM Best of luck with it! With all your knowledge and experience he's in great hands!
I know in the cases I had, it was either they got some liquids and nutrition ASAP or they were for sure goners. They were so lethargic and slow that they didn't have the strength to walk about their cages. I'm glad to hear that's not the case with this little one. Keep us updated!
luciddream 12-05-2008, 10:52 PM Glad they arrived safely. But, come on, no tripod pics? What the hell?
J/K. They look great. Good luck with the little one. You're gonna have to post some pics of lizardtropolis one of these days. I'd love to see how you have all them set up.

I hear ya JK. Sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Its either try to get some fluids/food in them or watch them die. Totally got that. Im just hoping we dont have to go there.
Heh. Thanks for the compliment but a lot of this depends on him. I can give him the right heat, humidity, good hides, food, blah blah blah but if he doesnt want to live its outa my hands. Dont go towards the light, Shorty! Dont you quit on me!!!!
Alright enough of this nonsense. Way too early for nonsense. Its never too early for nonsense.

Ok, UPDATE. Shorty ate some ground turkey out of the dish I put under a hide. YEAH BABY thats what Im talkin' about. He struggles just a little to get his food down. You know how a healthy monitor just gulp gulp gone? It takes him longer. Lots of dragging his head against stuff to work the food into the proper place. Thats ok, he's learning. But he's eating on his own. Kewl.
norsmis 12-06-2008, 07:35 AM Congrats on the baby step V!!!! Weare all pulling for shorty!!!!
Varanus99 12-06-2008, 07:40 AM As we all know Nor getting them to eat on their own, any type of herp, is the big step. He's not out of the woods yet but it looks promising.
Thanks for the support!
JChandler 12-06-2008, 08:02 AM That's awesome....

Ah Ha! Thats a good score, man. I was BEGGING for a trio and I grabbed a runt. Hes doing ok though. Hes eating.
Supposedly they come from a pure flavi and a flavi/argus cross. I honestly dont know but I really have no reason to doubt that. They dont look much like argus to me at all.
Varanette 12-23-2008, 02:31 PM Thats awesome, Dave. Thanks! At least in this one I dont call myself an idiot!
HA HA! You didn't?
I think that Shorty is going to pull through. We had a issue with lil momma, and she is the one who had the clutch f ackies...and is doing GREAT! V has a Knack for the nurturing! He's AWESOME! :D
