Tell us about your camera setup, Christine. What are you using for lighting? Your exposure is perfect.
I use a Canon 20d with several lenses but i tend to use my 17-85mm IS the most. It's a fairly sharp lens and has a good range. I can get wide angle top pattern shots and macro scale shots all with the same lens. For lighting i use an Alien Bees Flash head with a large soft box attached to it to soften and defuse the light. I have a small table with a couple yards of black velvet cloth pinned to the wall and draped over the table. I pin a large white piece of paper over the velvet for white shots. I have an 18% Grey card which i use to calibrate my white balance in the camera before shooting to keep the colors popping but accurate. I tell ya, using a flash that is off camera and shooting from various angles really makes a huge difference in your shots and makes for a much more dramatic photo. Here is a video that shows my photo setup.
