Does this drive anyone else nuts?

I get email. I get a lot of email. I get email from people asking about tons of stuff. Animals, cages, other Boa breeders, genetics… it just goes on and on. What never ceases to amaze me is the number of people who send an email, sometimes a lengthy email that would require a lot of my time to completely answer. Emails with questions. Questions such as:

- Questions about health issues they are having with animals they bought from someone else.
- Questions about genetics regarding animals they bought from someone else.
- Questions about husbandry regarding animals they bought from someone else.
- Questions about breeding animals they bought from someone else.

It’s proper to call your supplier for questions about products you bought from them. You bought a Ford from the Ford dealer? Do you ask the Doge guy to fix your Ford or answer you Ford questions? Of course not, but herpers buy whatever from wherever and then expect to get answers from somebody they didn’t take their business too. But! That isn’t what drives me crazier than anything else….

They email me. People do not have the slightest idea how to write a letter. None. A letter starts out with some sort of greeting. Sometimes that greeting is as simple as just the person’s name that you are sending the email to. Simple enough right? Apparently not. Then you have the letter itself. Everyone seems to be able to do that, even if sometimes there is a complete lack of any punctuation. Then there are those that have decided it’s better to capitalize everything rather than have the agony of a capital letter here or there. It’s really a bother to many folks. But! Is that what drives me crazier than anything else? No. I’m not going to complain about grammar because anyone that ever reads my dribble knows that I have more than enough trouble with my own grammar. I didn’t mention speeling either. Were it not for spell check, I’d reveal myself to be the imbecile I really am.

The one thing that drives me crazier than anything else is this; Where is your signature? Or for those who have no idea what that word means; Who are you, letter writer?

Why is that so complicated? I have never ever in my life ever written anything to anyone where I did not include my name on it. OK, I text my daughter without signing it “Daddy” each time. But she knows a text from me is from me. Her phone has my name on each of my messages.

I don’t know who everyone in the planet is based on their email address. I get emails from people. Sometimes people who I know, that don’t sign their email. They think I know who they are based on the email address. I do if the email address has their name in it, but it seems that most people have decided not to include this tiny detail. But it seems that the majority of people do not include their name in email. I don’t get that. I’ll never get that. There just is absolutely no reason not to complete an email with your name at the end. None. Zero nadda.

For the life of me, I’ll never understand how someone will send an email who is trying to negotiate some transaction that involves their hard earned money. Sometimes a great deal of money, and yet, they do not include their name! No wonder my hair all fell out!

And one last thing. Your name, unless you are named Uriah, and I only know one Uriah, your correspondence should not be signed, “Tom”. It should be “Tom Jones” or “Jeff Ronne”, or “Mortimer Snerd” for Pete’s sake. (No Pete in particular by they way.)

It’s simple really. Just include your name with your correspondence. It’s just considerate to the person you are emailing. Plus think of the sanity of the recipient of your email. You need to consider the frail line they walk and they try to maintain some semblance of sanity.

Thank you,

Jeff Ronne Sr.

I have a thought. You wont like it, but its a thought.

I would bet that people buy boas or whatever from Joe Schmoe who hasnt a clue and probably didnt produce the animal himself. Then they have questions or problems so they turn to a a top boa guy. You are well known in the industry and have a strong internet presence. Not to blow smoke up your skirt, but you're a top boa guy. They want the goody goody information. So they email you after they bought a tube with a head thats barely alive from Joe Schmoe for a few dollars.

Im not saying its RIGHT but that would be my guess.

I tend to agree with you. I think its bad form to write long, lenghtly emails inquiring about animals purchased from someone else. I have never bought an animal from you. I wouldnt bother you with my problems. If I had a problem I would go to the dealer I purchased the animal from. Makes perfect sense to me.

I can understand a question like "Jeff, are **fill in the blank** boas mean?". Thats just a random newbie question. Perhaps a bit tiring but no harm no foul. But I think long, complicated questions about animals bought somewhere else is impolite.

And the whole email thing yeah I agree with you on that, LOL! I am small time. I dont sell many animals. And even I get "Male or female"? Male or female what?? Or "How many do you have?" to which I might respond "I have 11" and I get "Oh, well I would like one". HUH? Its all just part of the game. But like I said Im small potatoes. Bush-League if you will. I can only guess what a large breeder goes through.

I dont think its gonna change. You'll have your good emails and your bad. All I can say is hang in there and get a good hat.

Sincerely,

Mortimer Snerd

Personally i think people should do there homework before buying something.
To contact someone with basic care needs is a little bit rediculous when there are TONS of caresheets on the web and on paper.

Jeff,
Yes, people have forgotten the basic concept of communication in general. This doesn't just apply to the modern form of letter writing, it applies to phone calls when people don't identify themselves in anyway. I am not referring to people you have talked to a few times but the ones you have never spoken with before.
You have a wonderful day.
Jeff Chandler

Thanks everyone and especially Mort, but the main point, though I did mention a couple of the other email issues, the main one and the only one putting my fragile sanity is jeopardy is the signature. I know I am a Boa big mouth and am humbled that people sometimes seek my opinion, but... one of the first things I always look at when I get an email is, who is writing. That's all.

Thanks Mort, can I call you Mort?

Jeff Ronne Sr. 100% most of the time.

By the way, this writing, like most everything I write, is written with my tongue firmly planted in my right cheek.

I confess, I do not always sign my full name, but do normally put my website under it. Being a women, I was taught to be very careful giving out my full name, and I guess I unconsciencously do that. Not to mention, I have a made up first name that you are not likely to run across anywhere else. About the only time I do not sign is when it is a re: correspondance that has all the previous emails attached. Normally take my cue from the other person, when they quit signing their name, I do to.

Sure you can. Mort, Morty, The Great Mortdini. Whatever strikes your fancy.

And yes I agree it would be nice if people signed their emails. I like to know who Im talking to. I have no solution to the problem Im afraid.

On my voicemail I have had to leave the following message:

"Hello you have reached (Me) please leave your NAME, PHONE NUMBER and the nature of your call. If you do not leave your phone number I will be unable to call you back. Thank you"

And a bunch of them still dont leave it. *Shrug*

My opinion?? The schools do NOT teach basic English anymore (reading, writing, etc)...so the kids graduate with NO knowledge of proper letter writing. That, and a general decline in common courtesy.

-Grins.- I wrote an Op/Ed piece about this for one of my college classes a while ago. I eventually want to earn my English Education Degree so that I can properly educate the masses. That, and I really, really want to eradicate ebonics from the world. O_o I know. It'll never happen.

It drives me absolutely insane when people do this too. Forum messages are my only exception, simply because most of the people on forums I know.

Dear Jeff,

You are so amazing. Thank you for all of your help and for putting up with the random mooks of the herp world.

Yours truly,

Melanie Seals. ^_^

I think most people have the best of intentions, and like was said, why not get the best possible advice on a problem boa constrictor right from one of the best? It may be irritating but who's to say that this person won't appreciate the advice so much that they'll come back and do business with you. Everyone is a potential customer, and not everyone realize common courtesy like leaving a name with other contact info.

In fact, I've forgotten to leave my name with a phone number before, this is why I know have my name and contact information saved so it is placed in every email.

read your rant. really sympathize with your dribble.
i had a similar rant way back on here.
comes down to this: people don't care.
i care, you care, some others care, but generally people don't care.
which really sucks for them, though they don't know it. i've got old socks that could formulate a thought, decide how it should be presented, and deliver it in an understandable way, better than some of the homonids we share our blue ball with. it really is a drag to read their dribble. it's too much work in some cases, and it really does expose the fact that while they are typing, they're clearly sitting on their brains too hard, and the O2 ain't gettin' in there.
but despite all the gloom and doom infused profusely throughout your droll monologue, i did find some joy in the reading of the the two sentences that i graciously highlighted in quotes above for your perusal.
seems like we could all benefit a little "speel" check, myself included !
hang in there bro, we'll eventually get 'em to care, after all, it's only 'cause you care that you even bring it up, i for one, appreciate that.

just noticed that even though i "care"... i apparently don't care enough to use caps when working on the forum.
unless i type God, or Jesus.
