Just a curiosity quetion...............Have easterns and westerns been crossed successfully? Or are we too pure for that? And I don't mean that sarcasticly.

View Full Version : A Question For All You Hoggie People Quig 08-11-2010, 10:22 AM Just a curiosity quetion...............Have easterns and westerns been crossed successfully? Or are we too pure for that? And I don't mean that sarcasticly. FloridaHogs 08-11-2010, 10:28 AM Not to my knowledge, but it seems like a pointless crossing. StudentoftheReptile 08-11-2010, 02:19 PM On the same topic, has there ever been any western/mexican intergrades? or perhaps southern x eastern intergrades? (naturally and/or in captivity?) Quig 08-11-2010, 02:40 PM but it seems like a pointless crossing. :D True enough. Was just curious :wamma: Gregg M 08-11-2010, 07:54 PM On the same topic, has there ever been any western/mexican intergrades? Mexicans and westerns have been crossed in captivity before... or perhaps southern x eastern intergrades? (naturally and/or in captivity?) Most likely not naturally and I have never heard of it in captivity... If anything a Southern X Western would be a more compatable cross as these two species are much more closely related to eachother... In my opinion hognose crosses are pointless unless you want to make muddy looking hybrids... I see no advantage or gain in the production of these hybrids... StudentoftheReptile 08-11-2010, 10:43 PM Yeah, unless they're naturally occuring intergrades (which I've never heard of any), I don't really go for hybrids/crosses myself. Most likely not naturally and I have never heard of it in captivity... If anything a Southern X Western would be a more compatable cross as these two species are much more closely related to eachother... Really? I haven't done any DNA sequencing or anything, but I figured based on their general shape and physiology, a southern looks more akin to an eastern than it would a western (not to mention easterns and southerns' range overlap a lot). I'm just going by head shape, not as heavily keeled as the wests/mexis, patterning is similar, etc. Adam_S 08-11-2010, 11:09 PM Just a curiosity quetion...............Have easterns and westerns been crossed successfully? Or are we too pure for that? And I don't mean that sarcasticly. :nono: too pure for that ... one practical concern is that crossing Westerns with other sub-species might cause Westerns, which can sometimes be reluctant to accept unscented frozen thawed rodents to resemble the specialized amphibian feeding behaviors of their Eastern Hognose snake counterparts. Not trying to muddy the issue, but imagine if all Irian Jaya Carpet pythons were mouse eaters; wouldn't creating IJ/jungle crosses then become even less appealing? Quig 08-11-2010, 11:11 PM I don't do crossbreeds either, was just a question. About that compatability, I would think eastern and southern would be more compatable than the southern and western. Between the three of them it seems the western is the odd ball out as far as similarity in appearance. I don't dabble in DNA but it just seems the more appropriate pairing. Quig 08-11-2010, 11:14 PM :nono: too pure for that ... one practical concern is that crossing Westerns with other sub-species might cause Westerns, which can sometimes be reluctant to accept unscented frozen thawed rodents to resemble the specialized amphibian feeding behaviors of their Eastern Hognose snake counterparts. Not trying to muddy the issue, but imagine if all Irian Jaya Carpet pythons were mouse eaters; wouldn't creating IJ/jungle crosses then become even less appealing? Hadn't even considered that :lmao:. Snake would get a complex wouldn't it? Gregg M 08-21-2010, 12:33 PM Molecular testing shows that the Southern and Westers are more closely related... I did read a report and if I come across it again, I will post it... And by looking at the physical structure of both the Southern and Western, they look very similar in my opinion... Their rostral scales are almost identical as well... Just my observation... FloridaHogs 08-23-2010, 07:14 PM Mine as well Gregg. |
