Well our beloved Reticulated python has got a new name now. Python reticulatus is no longer in existence. Broghammerus reticulatus is the new specie name. Closely related to the Timor python.

Thought that it was a interesting bit of info....well me and Jason thought it was!!!!!

Its hard to keep up with the names sometimes.... it seems every few years they get on a name changing kick.... Is there a reason for that?

I really don't wanna change my name to broghammerus.princess. It doesn't have quite the same ring to it...

Yeah, definitely interesting. Those guys that do classifications just needed something to do apparently!

So since they're not technically a Python specie anymore...maybe the ban on Pythons, Eunectes, and Boas won't affect them.... wishful thinking!

Long live Broghammerus!!!

I've never owned any Timors (although I badly want to) but I've always thought they looked kind of similar looking at pictures. Is it just Timors and Retics in the Broghammerus genus right now? Broghammerus is funner to say than Python

There will also be more reclassifications

p. sebae, p. natalensis, p. bivittatus, p. molurus will all be in the same genus now.

Interesting stuff here people. Once I get linkys I will post!

What was their reasoning for the change?

I'd to see some links as well. That's some interesting info...

What was their reasoning for the change?

DNA evidence that they are more closely related to timors then other pythons. That the timors and retics broke off on their own evolutionary path from the rest of the autralasian species. Personally, I think it's ridiculous with all the renaming, and the fact that they have been named broghammerus, since it's the oldest name proposed that was published. Whatever, mine will stay labeled P. reticulatus until there is more evidence or the renaming is done, as I doubt this is the final word on the matter. There's been something mentioned about iris color, and how there aren't other pythons that have orange iris, but apparently noone ever examined P. curtus, then. Whatever. retics will be P. reticulatus and GTPs will be Chondropythons in my book.

I just read the scientific paper suggesting the name change a couple weeks ago. Feel free to PM me if anybody's interesting in reading it, I'll e-mail a pdf of the paper. It's a rather interesting read.

time to do some timor retic hybrids and see what pops out...

I found the paper online last night. Very very cool for a science nerd like myself.... if anyone wants a link they can PM me...lots of scientific jargon thrown around so be prepared, I'm not gonna translate it for you!
