Hey guys......

Not sure if this is ever been mentioned or brought up before (I tried to do a search and didn't come up with anything - so please forgive me if this is redundant)............but has the idea of a BLBC Calendar ever come up? Maybe something like the pics from each months contest could be used in a Calendar? OR there could even be a separate thread and voting process for pics to include in the Calendar? Hard copy calendars could even be sold and the proceeds could be used for USARK or even split and some could go to Larry and BT for site maintenance.....??

(MODS - feel free to move this is, if this is in an inappropriate section) Thanks -

I think if we did a calendar, we should have people submit photos to a committee (I'll volunteer to be on committee) and that committee can decide which photos to include, to make sure that not only are they good quality photos, but also a good variety of animals.

At this point, we're trying to get a game plan going before we present it to the bosses. Looking into printers, etc.

We'd LIKE to set it up like the t-shirts, where we post a link and members can go and order them directly from the site. That way we don't have to deal with the hassle of ordering in bulk, one person has to send them to each member, deal with the financial side of it, and all that stuff.

We're looking into cafepress.com and lulu.com.

Any ideas, suggestions, whatever... Feel free to post it! Let's get this ball rolling!

I used cafe press for T-shirts a while back for a themed birthday party and was really happy with the quality and service... was decently affordable.. I wasn't trying to re-sell them though...

But overall I liked the stuff.

gals...
i don't think anyone ever expected we'd have a horde of statuesque female homo sapiens modelling anything reptilian.
this is after all, a budget operation we've got cookin' here...
not like we could get the budweiser girls in matching red white and blue thongs to hold a 20' 'tic on the beach in islamorada for a ten dollar calendar selling 123 copies anyway.
though i'd be okay with that if we could...

I don't know if this is still being bandied about but on another forum I am a member of they do an annual calendar. The way they do it is come up with 12 catagories and the cover, everyone may submit 3 photos per catagory and then we all vote on our favorites.

Just thought I'd throw that in there....

Yeah, I saw it on their forums. Cafepress does really nice work. I just wonder if many people will be willing to pay that much for a calendar? Thoughts?

$25.00 isn't too bad, I'd probably pay it if the photo's were good quality. One other thing I noticed, it said they were raising money for the forum. Which means the base cost of the calendar is lower and they added on a few bucks for some profit. I don't know if you guys are looking at this as just something cool to do for the club/community without any profit or as something to help pay for forum costs or maybe donate to USARK, but if you aren't looking to get any money out of it they'll probably be cheaper.

For anyone who's never messed with Cafepress, the way it works is each item you put in your storefront has a base cost (what Cafepress gets for printing it) and then you have the option of adding on however much you want for the retail price (which goes to you).

Just logged into my account to check quick -- the base price on the largest calendar (17" x 11") is $18.99.

Chris, thanks for the info! Do you know how much the base price for the standard size is?

m00kfu
09-02-2010, 11:58 PM
Here's the base prices for the different sized calendars... measurements are width x height

11 x 8.5 - $14.99
17 x 11 - $18.99
11 x 17 - 16.99

I believe all three of those let you use an image for each month like the chondro one posted above. They also have a cheap one for $3.99 that only uses one image, looks like it might be one of the tear off style calendars wear you just tear a sheet off each month.

Okay so it seems like there is some interest overall, before I take it to anyone with a higher rank then me the question would be are their enough volunteers that would be able to tell people that their pictures aren't good enough to make the cut?

Seriously you would want the best of the best shots, tack sharp plus they would have to be larger file sized I'm assuming then the cropped resized ones we see on the boards...sure it could be done on a monthly basis in a poll of some kind unless we wanted to rush it in the next month to get it ready for this coming year...

Not that I don't think there are some funny shots but we are a reptile board with a ton of different species that could seriously be made into a really nice herp related calendar and we have some seriously good photographers here so it could be a really high quality item...

Price can be talked about and discussed with the group in charge, donate it to server costs, to charity, beer money, etc....as long as a price that is reasonable can be found...

Just other things to consider....send me a pm if you are willing to volunteer your time and we can go from there....

You're going to want the original image right off the camera for something like this, the cropped/resized images that get posted are gonna end up blurry when printed out for something like this. Also, if you go with the larger sized calendar the images are going to have to be that much sharper to be able to be printed without coming out blurry...

So far, we have 3 volunteers (including myself) to help out with this project. If we don't get more, we're not going to be able to make it happen! Anybody that's willing to be a part of the committee (if approved by the powers that be) please PM Jeff Chandler sometime this weekend so that we can present our idea to Larry and BT next week!

I really think it's an awesome idea and I'm hoping we can make it work!

Hey Ck
I'll provide Oscar, our 16' retic and you and I can be the "wranglers". You know just to make sure he is placed just right.:wamma::wamma:

Seriously, calendars are really cool but they seem to be a difficult sell. At least through the store anyway. I have purchased reptile calendars in the past for resale but I couldn't compete with the "kios's" (sp) at the mall that offer them for 25 to 50% off. If we could get a commitment from the members before printing and then add a certain % to the total order then we (BLBC) would stand a better chance of not losing money. Just something to think about.

I dont have time to volunteer, just tell me where you want pics!

I think a sign up would be good.

I will however ask my mom, who does sports photography and has access to alot of different cool things, if she knows of a good place to get calendars :) I shot some pics of a family friend's car and we did a calendar, i'll find out details and get back to yah :)

The printers that we're looking at using work kind of like the site we're getting t-shirts from. We'd post a link here to the calendar store and members can go in and order their calendars. Then the company makes it. We're trying to avoid having all the calendars sent to one person and giving that person the responsibility of handling the money and shipping them all out, etc. Also, that way we don't end up with a bunch of unsold calendars.

At this point, there's not much to do until we get the Okay from Larry and BT. But we can't get that if we don't have people committed to the cause.

Once we get their approval, we'll need help deciding on how to select the photos for the calendar, actual photo selection, format, etc. Also, any ideas that you think would make the calendar better.

m00kfu
09-07-2010, 09:58 PM
For the photo's, resolution is going to be key. You want them to be at least 200 dpi. The photos that my camera takes are 17.25 x 11.5 inches at 200 dpi, so for the most part you're going to want the original image with little to no cropping. And of course they need to be as sharp as possible... I'd say for selection, have an open submission and then weed out any that aren't clean enough or too low of a resolution. Then maybe have a poll? Either let everyone pick 12 images from one poll, or do 12 seperate polls. Start with a poll for January. The winning image obviously gets to be January, then put up a new poll for February which would be all the remaining pictures and continue like that until all 12 have been chosen.
