View Full Version : What to do..what to do..help me out
Varanus99 12-09-2008, 06:38 PM Hey folks. Howyoudoin'?
I have a couple of ideas for future posts and was lookin' for some feedback. Before I open the gateway to hell that I call a mouth I wanted too see if there was any interest in these topics. Ive gotten a couple questions via email and always like to answer them here since I think, perhaps, others might be interested as well.
Basking spots: What they are, why they are essential and why some folks mess this up.
Breeding: From getting a compatible pair all the way to baby's first day
DIY light fixtures which will throw 150 degrees for under $4. With a little work on the keepers part.
Ackies A-Z: They are my pride and joy. I talked about this with Bry. Sorta like a caresheet but with more nuts and bolts, real world info.
Best and worst choices for a beginner varanid keeper. Im gonna use the word "nile" a lot LOL!
Stop bothering us with your desperate pleas for approval and your monitor gobble-dee-gook. Im a big boy I can take it. Dont make me cry, though!
Any interest in this jazz? Lemme know. At your service :yessir:
I want to hear Ackies A-Z, DIY light fixtures and breeding tips.
Post it all, you have the knowledge and that way it's here for people to find if they need it. If you are willing to take the time I'm willing to read your posts.
Sputnik 12-09-2008, 06:46 PM I like to hear the gateway to hell to throw up this topic at least!
DIY light fixtures which will throw 150 degrees for under $4. With a little work on the keepers part.
I'd like to see it all, especially the Ackies A-Z!

Ok two votes on that one. That ones a keeper. Will work on that one next :yessir:
That one will probably wind up in the cages/enclosures forum.
tokaysunlimited 12-09-2008, 06:49 PM Well it was something i was going to call you about.....
Here is a idea!
How to tame the abrasive.
So you have your hatchling juvi Nile etc.It hits that 2 ft. mark and BAM its a phsyco.
Complete with pictures and handling tecniques.
You type it and ill take the pics!
But on the other hand, since ackies seem to be the best 1rst varanid and most forgiving to human error (in a sense).
That sounds like a good idea.
You've already got a monitor 'how to' thread goin' . I'm certainly interested. Anything else you add to it will only be that much more accurate info future monitor geeks can use. I say go for it.:letsparty:

Actually that was another idea I had. Taming and my thoughts about it. Nice of you to throw yourself on the chopping block for the good of the BLBC. Although Im not sure if our ideas mesh. I bet they will we seem to agree on everything. LOL!
Alright thats another topic: Taming the good, the bad and the ugly.
Ill say right now...and tell me honestly Tokay if you agree...I think some individuals will NEVER be lap lizards no matter what you do. But I think just anout any psycho can be improved with some dedication. Yay or nay?
FloridaHogs 12-09-2008, 06:58 PM I say do them all. While I will probably never have any, I do still love to learn about them.
tokaysunlimited 12-09-2008, 07:04 PM Are you kidding me???There are alot of the beasts that cannot be tamed.
Ill be damned if i ever even use the word.lol.
But like with retics for example.Seems cool to get it because of the size it attains.OK great!!!!
Wellll its cool to watch it eat.OK GREAT!!!
Gets big to fast and is no longer handleble.HMMMMM
Even at that (and i am sure you can agree)VARANIDS HAVE THERE DAYS!
Sure there are alot of tricks to CALM DOWN Varanids.
But what do you do when they are being arseholes?
How do you handle them?
The tail whips and gaping with all intent to bite you and (what seems like forever)not let go.
And you know as well as me that even the calmest of dwarfs do that.
Told you man i cant type for the life of me.But on the phone ill talk for hours.:machinegun:

I dunno about the DVD. Little techy for me. I was thinking of writing a small book about basic monitor care as I dont think one exists. Just a simple, basic book with solid information which easy to read and geared towards the new keeper. Just a thought. Dont know who would read it who the hell am I? Nobody!

luciddream 12-09-2008, 07:46 PM I'd like to see them all. Basking spots would be a good 1st topic, the ackie one, the best and worsst 1st monitor. Do all of em, and some other ones too!!

JChandler 12-09-2008, 08:22 PM Do it all, get the book in print and I'll buy it, as long as it isn't $5 gazillion dollars....lol
Varanus99 12-09-2008, 08:33 PM Do it all, get the book in print and I'll buy it, as long as it isn't $5 gazillion dollars....lol
I already have one set aside for you at the low low discount price of $3 gazillion. Its signed though so its totally worth it.
If anything I would like the book to be $10 or less. I would like everyone to be able to afford it without a problem. No flashy cover, no pictures of monitors in their natural habitat. Thats real pretty but it doesnt help the kid with a sav he just got at a show 20 minutes ago. I wanna try to cram as much info as I can into a small, inexpesnive book with no fluff whatsoever. Sorta like the Philippe De Vosjoli books of old.
I know zero about publishing a book nor do I think I am that great of a writer. But who knows, maybe Ill just do it Bush-League style. Printer paper and some scotch tape.

A wordy book is what I'm talking about, to many times I get a book and get disappointed within the first few pages
Varanus99 12-09-2008, 08:38 PM A wordy book is what I'm talking about, to many times I get a book and get disappointed within the first few pages
I can do wordy :yessir:
JChandler 12-09-2008, 08:43 PM I have a gecko book here by Philippe De Vosjoli, I think it is the one he did with Tremper, but good all around book...
Sputnik 12-09-2008, 08:45 PM I can do wordy :yessir:
No kidding, but it's always a good wordy post you put out there!
FloridaHogs 12-09-2008, 09:00 PM If you go to publish, go with Eco over bowtie simply because Bowtie has some staffing issues at the moment and have shelved new projects. Also, photos will make a book (according to the publisher). Consider your target audience. Is it someone with herp experience getting a monitor for the first time, or the kid who chose a monitor for his first pet. You can be wordy with one, but not the other. My hognose book is geared for the later. I tried to be as basic as possible, while still trying to get good information out there. Sorry Jeff, I know it probably did not keep your attention and was very repetative. Hopefully the rewrite will be more in the middle of the two afore mentioned audiences.
m00kfu 12-09-2008, 09:29 PM Consider me interested. It's going to be a couple years before I'll be in the market to get a big lizard, but I'm always looking and cataloging good info.

Jenea I have no issues with yours it was a good read, I do think you should put out an advanced keeper one that gets more into them....but I think that about everything. I mean I have read the complete chondro book at least 5 times and own one.....
V write the book like you write your posts and you'll captivate any audience.

I am seriously considering it. I do enjoy writing. I do not think I am Mark Twain but I have fun with it. I need to polish up a bit. But Im really thinking about putting something together and sending it out to a publisher. Worst they can say is "You stink". Fine. Ill just post the whole thing here, LOL!

Worst they will say is be more specific and get rid of the humor. And I'd tell them -- nope....:machinegun:

Once again I have no clue how to do that. I would have to research that. Not a bad idea though. I cant send myself a rejection letter.

I've researched it myself but lost the links when my other PC died. When I find it all again I'll shoot the links over to ya.
Just an idea to toss out there too....What about a grant? There are places that would fund you writing a book. Can't hurt to look into it more.

BTW if anyone out there would like to pay me to sit around and write about lizards I am your private dancer! Dancer for money!
FloridaHogs 12-10-2008, 11:39 AM Self publishing cost out the ying yang and you do not get the benifit of distribution. The problem with self publishing is that you have to buy a huge amount of books to get the cost down so that you can sell it with out loosing money on each book. And buying 1000+ books at (if you are lucky) 7 to 10 dollars a pop is a lot of cashola to come up with up front. Put it simply, if I go through a publisher, I can buy my own book for wholesale cheaper than I can self publish, I get distribution I would not otherwise have, and I am not sitting on a bunch of merchandise that I am hoping sales for at least cost so I can get my money back out of it. The secret is to find a publisher that is not going to make you sign aways the rights to your book.

i'll see your "ackies a-z" and i'll raise 'ya two "betcha can't stay on topics".
do love your work V, and i'm not just talkin' the between the sheets stuff i've heard about on the streets of bridgeport, ( i said that in case jessica ever reads this...who's got your back now bro ?! ) and of course, your wanderings help keep it fun. while some may drop the old "write what you like" on 'ya in some post-traumatic patronization fashion, i believe you should write what i like. 'nuff said.
