View Full Version : Gettin me some FRILLIES tonight!
KordeksKritters 12-10-2008, 08:58 AM I'm super excited. Looks like Matt and I are getting into something new...frillies (frilled dragons)!! The tank is all set up, we go pick up the little guys tonight. Such an exciting project for us to get into, as we have been wanting to get into something new, just not sure what.
We went over to pick up feeders the other night, and I finally asked about the pair they had. I've been eyeing them up for awhile now, but didn't quite have the space or the knowledge I thought I needed, and actually was wrong on a lot of things. So Joan (the owner who I LOVE) let me HOLD one (I didn't think they were handlable, but these guys are!), and that was it. Even Matt fell in love, which is odd since he is such a beardie guy. But we walked out going "if only..."
Well last night I went over again (gotta love having a good reptile store 3 blocks from the house!), started talking again about how we wanted to unload these 6 beardies we have had for awhile, and Vern (the other owner/husband of Joan) told us to go get them and he might make us a deal. So we talked more, and he said he would do a payment plan with us for the whole setup and the frillies, and do a partial trade for the dragons! And he is letting us bring them home NOW (it's not like he doesn't see us or know us well, he vends/sponsors our show). So last night we got the tank all set up purty, and tonight we go pick them up!! I can't wait!
Yes, you will get pics, lots of them. But I wanted to share the excitement about it now.
Anybody else into these guys? Any tips/tricks/advice that I can't find on caresheets?
All I know about frilleds is from shows about Australia and Jurrasic Park LOL. They look cool as heck and if they are handlable all the better eh. Don't forget pics :)

tokaysunlimited 12-10-2008, 10:11 AM We have a trio and they rock!!!
As long as you keep them humid, warm and in a nice sized aboreal enclosure then you are good to go.
Just watch them when there shedding. They tend to get stuck shed in there frills.
And if you want them to fill up for pictures dangle a rubber snake in front of them.

Seriously dude, is there ANYTHING you DON'T own? LOL
Thanks for the tip about shedding. I've seen nothing about that on the caresheets yet. I am a total freak when my animals are shedding, especially the beardies, and have this tendancy to try to pick shed off LOL. My one dragon, Rames, HATES me now because of it.
Oh great, a way to get them to frill out. Just what Matt needs to know. LOL

Itsalso a good place for parasites to hide to.

Parasites? Yuck. What should I be looking out for (besides the obvious)? Do they get pissy if you start trying to get in the frills to check things out? The pair we are getting are very docile, but I have a feeling that if they got mad enough, it would hurt like hell if I got bit...

Ticks etc.the usuall.Just make sure you have a hold of you neck and check every nook and cranny behind the frill. How long havethey had them in the country?
Also do you have the bearded dragon manual?I think it was by bob malioux (cant remember off hand).
Anyways there is a decent section in the back of the book on Frillies.
KordeksKritters 12-10-2008, 11:53 AM I know they have had them in the store for about 4 months now, and I have watched them grow nicely since they opened (again, gotta love having a good reptile store 3 blocks from home LOL). They are both active and look good, and I know Vern and Joan are always on top of things with their animals. But I will check them out, just in case.
I do have the manual, but never honestly looked at the frilled section before. I guess I'll have to go dig it out from the "box o' reptile stuff" I keep in the closet.
I am using one of the ZooMed Reptifogger deals in the cage (the ones with the long expandable tube and the big water bottle)...seems to keep the humidity at about 55-60% so far after having it on all night. Should I keep that on at night as well? For right now, they are in a glass tank (40B) until we get their custom tank built after Christmas. They are both still young (about 6-8 months old) and should be fine in this tank for now, but I have not read anything about humidity drops at night. Temp drops are not a problem. I also have the nozzle/tube thing pointing to the opposite side of the tank as the water bowl, so they can drink any droplets off the plants on that side if they choose.
Thanks for the tips! Keep them coming. By tonight I plan on being a frillie expert. LOL
FloridaHogs 12-10-2008, 12:56 PM Frilleds are awesome looking lizards! Congrats!!
OwnedByRetics 12-10-2008, 04:55 PM That's really cool! Looking forward to pictures.
JOHNS6068 12-10-2008, 05:36 PM Sounds pretty cool and can't wait to see the pictures of them!!!
Varanus99 12-10-2008, 06:43 PM Just to answer the question no I dont think there is a species of lizard that Tokay doesnt own now, has owned in the past or is getting in the near future. The man has undescribed species. Ya hear that? Undescribed! Nobody knows what they are yet he has them. Dont you just love this nutjob to pieces?
Congrats on the frillies. Ive never had them myself...weird for me Ive had a lot of stuff LOL...but Ive always admired them. A buddy of mine had them for a while. He did exactly what Tokay mentioned. Arboreal, warm and humid. And its true about that frill. Gotta keep a clean frill!
Good luck with the new additions. Very, very cool.
Oh and I love the rubber snake thing. Holey Moley thats funny!
KordeksKritters 12-10-2008, 10:09 PM Well, you asked for them...presenting THE FRILLIES (and their setup)

Ain't they just cute??? I am so in love. They are really interesting to watch run around and check out the cage. The bigger girl is loving the water dish, and the little one has already eaten 2 supers. God, I can see these guys becoming an obsession QUICK! Can't wait to build their big cage. We have decided to build one 36x18x36. How many do you think we can get in there? LOL
Tosha 12-10-2008, 10:13 PM awww - they are cuties aren't they :rockon::rockon::rockon:
Congratulations on the new additions.
Congrats on getting them home and all set up.
beclende 12-10-2008, 10:48 PM Very cool! Congrats and wonderful looking set up. I really like the fogger in there.
KordeksKritters 12-11-2008, 08:29 AM Yeah the fogger is great! It's a ZooMed Reptifogger. Big unit, holds lots of water (on low setting, after running all night and being filled back up at 9pm or so, it is still 3/4 of the way full), and I like the expandable/moveable tube.
This morning they are both warming up since lights came on 30 mins ago, but I can't wait to feed them in a little bit.
Matt is just upset because these are "his" animals, and I have basically already "stolen" them from him lol. But I feel I have a bit of a right to claim SOMETHING on them since I am the one who does all the feeding, cleaning, etc that goes on with the herps in the house LOL
