Does everybody who breeds hogs on here burmate?
I'm assuming yes, but do you burmate all of them or just what you are planning to breed in the spring.
Oh and one more question, what's the warmest you can get away with, because I'm not sure if I'll have somewhere at my place that I can keep cool enough.
Thanks, Sean
We go down into the low to mid 50's. We do not brumate the first winter on babies, those we keep em warm and eating. I don't know what the warmest you can get away with is, hopefully someone else can answer that for ya.

I brumate only what I plan to breed. I like the high 50's to low 60's as it's a little safer.
Last year I could only get my stuff in the high 60's to low 70's and everything still produced.
I plan to make what I'm calling a brumabator out of an old commercial refrigerator. That way I can keep the animals at a lower temperature easier.

That's good to hear, because I don't know how cold I will be able to get them yet. But I too was thinking of making something out of a fridge.
Thanks, Sean

What i been told is you haft to get below 60F for the digestivesystem of the snake to shut down. I brumated hogs down to 45F.

Firstly, 45 degrees is a bit too cool in my opinion... There is no need to drop them that low... Mid 50's is low enough...
You are correct, their digestive systems will not function properly below 60... Their digestive systems will not function properly below 70... but their digestive system is not important when brumating... You want their metabolism to shut down... If they are not eating but still metabolizing, this will cause huge weight loss during their 2 to 3 month brumation period... It is important to stop feeding 2 to 3 weeks prior to putting them in brumation to be sure their systems are empty...
Now, even though they are cooled and slowed during the brumation period, they will still be active... They will move around often... It is important to offer a water dish in order to keep them hydrated during this time... They will actively seek water...
Brumation is key when breeding hogs... Not only does the warming up after brumation trigger females to ovulate but the cool time also allows males to produce strong viale sperm... Brumation greatly increases your chances of getting good production from your hogs...
