Thats the gift that keeps on giving.
Hey, do me a favor, will ya? Tell Varanette I would like a trio of red ackies. Just kinda mention it off handed. Like "Nice weather we're having ya know ol V might like some red ackies". You know what to do, just bust out the charm.

Their feeding response is legendary. Most of the big boys eat hearty. But Id say these guys are in their own class. I mean niles have a strong feeding response but sometimes they are just trying to kill you. The argus is after the food first, you second.

Will do sorry I had a crazy couple days. I got like 200 calls. Sometimes Im bad with the phone.
FloridaHogs 12-11-2008, 08:06 PM I don't like the phone either. I prefer emails, that way everything is documented!

You document normal conversation?
FloridaHogs 12-11-2008, 08:21 PM Yup, ANYTHING involving the animals! And sometimes, depending on the conversation I do too. Keeps me from having to remember so much and junk my brain up with unecessary information!
m00kfu 12-11-2008, 08:23 PM That was just flat out awesome. Times like this REALLY make me wish I lived somewhere warm so I could have nice outdoor enclosure like that for a big lizard of some sort. ;)

I couldnt agree more!!!!!!
JChandler 12-11-2008, 11:49 PM That is an awesome video...some of his other videos are cool too!
How big do they get V? That one looks huge. Cool video.
Varanus99 12-12-2008, 07:11 AM How big do they get V? That one looks huge. Cool video.
Decent size but not gigantic.
Females tend to be 3 to 3 1/2' while males can grow to 4'-5'. Although 4' is more common.
They tend to stay on the leaner sider and dont bulk up quite as much as say a blackthroat might. But still a good sized lizard.
THAT was incredible. I hope he's using some kind of digestable string, like hemp maybe :D
constrictorkeeper 12-12-2008, 11:53 AM i used to do the same thing when i was a kid.
i would take a needle and thread, and thread through a chunk of chicken or beef, then i'd make it dance for my tiger salamander !
that thing could eat !
and for a kid in the 1970's, it was the only species of "monitor" i was ever gonna have !
...admittedly the ten gallon tank was not as cool as your bud's outdoor enclosure !
thanx for sharin',
ck
jknudson 12-12-2008, 06:33 PM His videos are awesome, and that one is hilarious to watch. Very obviously healthy lizards, and awesome outdoor enclosures... I wish I lived in an area to do something like that.
Varanus99 12-12-2008, 06:48 PM THAT was incredible. I hope he's using some kind of digestable string, like hemp maybe :D
Im betting he ties them in a way that when the lizards grab them the string unwinds. Just a guess.
Although I dont think a bit of string would harm an argus. Especially those. I think you would need a machine gun to take them out.
Nay, I doubt it hemp. Too active.

Varanette 12-18-2008, 07:08 PM The first time that V showed me that I didn't know what to think. I was impressed at the same time a lil nervous. Argus'll twist ya five ways to Sunday.
I dunno about a proper death roll but they might spin a little to try to rip off a chunk.

I didnt see the dog, too busy staring at the leezard :D
But in truth even a full grown argus would have his hands full with a medium sized-large dog. They arent really designed to take down prey like that. It would be more of a defensive fight I think. And the argus would most likely am-scra if he got the chance.
But a tiny dog? Maybe.
JOHNS6068 12-18-2008, 07:27 PM How did I miss this one I'm slacking....I love the video though boy are they quick!!! and the music ROCKS one of my favorite groups.

Varanus99 12-19-2008, 08:17 PM Yeah! I remember when that CD came out. Gosh, I feel old. lol Can Argus become handleable?
They can to a point.
They are naturally high strung, aggressive lizards. Its pretty rare that you'll find an argus that will just flop on your lap like an overfed sav. But not all of them are out and out mean.
They have the strongest feeding response of just about any monitor I can think of. You show them food they go nuts. Which is what you're seeing in the video.

Um....always have been! Remember me tellign you this and you saying 'nooooo you nice and sweet'....I have rough tear 'em to shreds moments.....Would love to have a back yard enclosure with a couple Balck throats and a couple argu's....that would be something....especially feeding time! :D

I dont even know how to respond to that.

I am sure if you can make a 6 ft.tunnel and enclose the pen in the winter with glass or something that penetrates the light and creates more heat,
well then its feasable.

I dunno man. Im sitting under 16" of snow right now. Its pretty damn cold out there.
I think it would be one hell of an undertaking to try to make something outdoors for varanids. I know the late, great Bert Langerwerf did it with tegus. I believe in one of his articles he mentions he preferred tegus over varanids since they handled the cold better.
Id be a nervous wreck keeping varanids outside here in New England.

Couldnt agree more with you there.I have kept them out dorrs in the summer months (all of 2 lol.).
Would be alot of work, but its definatly do-able.
Its just the night time temps when they are inactive would be a clencher.

Oh sure it could be done. Lotta work, lotta money, lotta nervous nights.
Hell, you could put a jacuzzi on your roof if you really, really wanted to :D
I do have a crawlspace under the back of my house. Its about 2' high. If I were to do something I would insulate that and figure out a way to heat an area of it. That would be their nighttime retreat. And, on really bad days, I could just keep them in there. Its a large area easily 10-15'. Its just low. But its a dirt floor so they could dig. And they couldnt dig out since its got block way below grade. They would have to dig pretty deep.
But all that noise is way down the road if ever. I still have to paint the bedroom before V-nette throws us all out!

Really i dont think it would be all that expensive to do.
Alot of work (hell yes).
But it will be done at some point!
