Back in the old days, army rank was metal and had 2 metal pins on the back to pin it to the collar of the uniform. When you were promoted the commander would pin the rank on your collar and leave the grommets off the backs so the pins were showing. Then your entire squad would walk by, shake your hand and then hit both collars with their fist. This would drive the rank into your flesh, hence the name "blood stripes"...... :rockon:
