View Full Version : Worst Bite.....from a reptile preferably
beclende 12-13-2008, 12:25 PM Alright guys, there was a similar thread over on the bloodpython boards I believe and it was pretty entertaining. Since a lot of you are new to me I thought that I would start it up over here with all of the Bush leaguers!
I will go first. Too many to list from a number of grumpy babies of all the species that I keep, but by far the worst came from my male red blood. He left a couple of teeth in me on more than one occasion before we worked out our differences:darth: Nothing too serious, but man when those teeth start to get bigger those little things take a good while to heal up! Needless to say he is now a lot of talk and that's about it, but it took some time and patience on my part to get him there. On a side note inspecting his mouth after giving me some teeth was not an easy task. My male coastal would probably do more damage as all the morelia species have some nice long chompers, but fortunately he is a doll.......................unless you are holding a rat!
Hope you all think this is fun

OwnedByRetics 12-13-2008, 12:49 PM Biggest snake I've ever been bitten by was an 11ft burm but it was bite and release so it was just a bunch of small holes. Most painful bite was probably from a Savannah Monitor, although it didn't really break the skin too much. Also got bit by a Tokay Gecko and although it wasn't all that painful I was very surprised that such a small lizard could bite so hard! All in all I've been bitten hundreds of times by various herps but the only permanent marks I've got on me is from being stupid with sharp things and a dog bite.

Nice Post!
norsmis 12-13-2008, 01:24 PM Black pine snake for sure..... Got me on the inside of my thigh. I had on jeans but she bit so hard she left a blood blister....
ReptileMan27 12-13-2008, 01:30 PM Probly have to say a bite from a red eared slider I had years ago lol. The beast took a chunk off my finger..
FloridaHogs 12-13-2008, 01:38 PM I don't get bite often and only had one draw blood. My fault completely. Had been feeding some, went to change a water bowl, and placed my hand right in front of the hide. Quick bite and release from my sweet little BP. Once I wiped the blood off there was nothing to see.

Passion4Pythons 12-13-2008, 01:52 PM Brazilian Rainbow Boa, same day she got to my house from Cali... lower left arm... still little scar spots from it... :)

and after its cleaned up...

she was around 8 foot
JOHNS6068 12-13-2008, 01:57 PM Nice Pictures!!!! I was just looking down this thread at the start and was thinking boy this is all going to be stories with no pictures. Cause it makes sense I have been biten serval times and once the blood is gonna it's hard to see anything and to I didn't to grab the camera either because it all happened so quick. The worst for me was my Suriname Male got me by surprise quick bite and release but it sure did bring the blood quick. It's amazing even with the BP'S how much blood they can bring with a quick bite as well.
Passion4Pythons 12-13-2008, 02:47 PM yeah, when the BRB got me it was a full mouth tag, bite, and let go.
she was around my wrist/hand so it didnt pull away - which would have made it worse....
ReptileMan27 12-13-2008, 02:56 PM Jeesh unlucky you lol.. My BRBs are the sweetest snakes I own :).. You literally have to try to get them to bite and they still wouldnt lol.. Not that I try lol..
Passion4Pythons 12-13-2008, 03:15 PM it was the day she got shipped in...
so she was stressed out...
Probly have to say a bite from a red eared slider I had years ago lol. The beast took a chunk off my finger..
I'd have to agree. I lost a chunk of meat to a painted turtle when I was a boy. As far as a snake bite, the worse was probably worrying whether or not a bite from a Massasauga Rattler was dry or not. That's a story in itself :wamma:
Oh, I did have a wolf/husky mix try to eat my hand once. 100% my fault
WinstonHS 12-13-2008, 03:47 PM Morelia bredli for sure. It was on the hand, I had the snake fo many years and one day I reached in carlessly to pull her out and next thing you know my hand was in absolute pain!
ChristianC 12-13-2008, 07:49 PM Large 7'+ Colombian boa. didn't hurt too bad but with over 90 pin holes in my arm it bled like crazy and bruised up pretty nicely.

WinstonHS 12-13-2008, 08:01 PM All I can say is..........NICE!
bassett524 12-13-2008, 08:01 PM I've yet to have a bad bite. I've had a few tokays clamp on hard but I always grab them before they can twist enough to rip the skin. Worst was probably my yellow anaconda, she was cozy wrapped around my arm and when I tried to remove her she got spooked and bit, but she was so small it just left a few tiny spots of blood. Now that she's big enough to do damage she's too calm to bite unless I do something really stupid.
Varanus99 12-13-2008, 08:03 PM 12 foot retic. Got me in the shoulder, was going for my face. Hit like a sledgehammer. No permanent damage but a LOT of blood. Dont trust them to this day.
Lizards it was a nile. Pretty good size around 4' and chunky. Bulldogged forearm. Still have ths scars.
A monkey tail skink took off a chunk of my thumb. Still have a noticeable scar. Had to see a doc. The chunk of flesh was literally dangling and he put it back together. They are mellow creatures but they pack a punch.
Got manhandled by more tokay geckos than I care to count.
I could go on but those are the first ones that come to memory.

If THIS was a contest, I think you'd be da winner

Nice Bro!!!!! Gotta love those battle wounds!!!
beclende 12-13-2008, 09:34 PM Nice Posts everyone!!!!! I never think to get my camera, but then again none of mine really compare to some of those pics (thankfully!) I got hit by my buddies BRB once and man those things are fast. Just got me on the finger so nothing to look at really.
This thread reminds me of the scene in Jaws where everyone is around the table below deck sharing their scars. Thankfully no broken heart posts, that's too cheesy.
FloridaHogs 12-13-2008, 09:36 PM See, tha is just funny! The first thing I think to do is grab my camera!
chrisr9240 12-13-2008, 10:07 PM my worst bite was a snapping turtle wheni was a kid catching frogs reached into a hole i saw a frog jumpinto and came out with a 6 or 7 inch snapper attached to my right pinkie other than that a few tokay bites and a few from our nics

Snappers are just mean and scary as all get out! I don't even attempt to touch those things, I like my digits attached!
JChandler 12-13-2008, 10:17 PM Wait you guys get bit by your reptiles???

That's how I got that rattlesnake bite. Chased a six foot plus blue racer down a hole. Reached in, grabbed somethin' by the head and it bit me. I pulled out two and a half foot of Massasagua rattlesnake. Boy, was that hair raisin'!!

I bet it was!! So was it a dry bite?
Jenea, yes it was. I didn't really panic. I was 17 at the time and knew it wouldn't kill me even if it was hot. That long ago it was standard procedure to cut the bite holes and suck out whatever poison might be there. It was a 45 minute walk home and nothing happened by the time I got there so I figured I survived it.
The whole story is in here somewhere :D
FloridaHogs 12-13-2008, 11:19 PM I take it you survived then! Did you get anti venom or just get really sick? Post a link so I can find the whole story...
In the 45 minutes it took me to get home nothing happened. It was a dry bite.
I don't know how to link to the post but here's a link to the thread. I'm near the bottom of the page

Varanus99 12-14-2008, 03:51 AM If THIS was a contest, I think you'd be da winner
Ha! This would be one contest I wouldnt want to win, LOL!
When I was a young buck I worked in the pet trade for 7 years. During that time period I worked at 2 different pet shops and also worked some nights and weekends for wholesalers, a couple of speciality reptile shops and helped out some people with large collections not for money but just for the thrill of being there. So I was exposed to a LOT of animals. And at the time the vast majority were wild caught. So they werent happy campers. They tore me to ribbons.
But back then we considered the scars badges of honor :D
bassett524 12-14-2008, 01:17 PM I'm waiting for tokays to post his bite stories. I'm sure with that collection he's got some good ones. if I remeber right I heard a nice one about a V. salvadori chomping down.
I also forgot, not reptile, but still fits in with the hobby. I got bitten by one of my tarantulas and it pretty much tightened up the muscles on the left side of my body for about a week. my hand could not really be moved and I couldn't extend my arm without extreme pain. my left shoulder and about the top 1/4 of my chest killed every time I took a big breath or yawned.
Ga_herps 12-14-2008, 06:24 PM As for lingering pain I would say a copperhead bite I received back when I was 18. I did not seek medical attention and medicated myself up on benedryl. The swelling and oozing was terrible, but I managed. I am left with very little scarring, but fortunately no severe tissue loss. Plain bull headness played a big part back then on why I did not head to the hospital. If I could do it all over I would def. make the hospital trip.
AaronP 12-15-2008, 01:28 AM I got bit in the neck by a carpet python I used to own:

Halfdawg 12-15-2008, 02:13 AM I had a 5 foot female Colombian boa back in 1990. I was holding it and my oldest son, 4 years old came into the room and walked up to me real quick and she bite him twice right in the forehead before both of us knew what happened. I had to quite him down real quick and hurry him to the ice cream shop before mom found out. He had 4 nice u marks on his forehead.

LMAO, that's funny, and then the ice cream bribery!
luciddream 12-17-2008, 11:45 AM The worst one was from a retic feeding accident that got my hand instead of the rat. It was a bite and release, so it didn't hurt too bad, but it left quite a lot of blood, a bruise and teeth marks for a month.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z233/luciddr3am/animals/DSC_0049.jpg
The one that hurt the worst was a spider BP that nailed my thumb instead of the rat and wrapped my wrist. I didn't want to pry him off, and I was gonna let him just stay there till he let go, but he kept tightening everytime he felt my pulse, so after 4 or 5 minutes I had to douse him with water from the sink. He let go pretty quickly after that. My wife wanted to try out the alcohol trick to see how well it really works, but I didn't want to try anything that noxious with the little guy, since it was my fault for dangling the rat without the hemostats. I still have the little pinprick scars under my thumb from the litttle bastard. No pic of that one :(

When we go on the reptile road trip I'll ask Tokay to let you play with one of the racers. Then it wont be unknown any more.

snakebite 01-04-2009, 01:26 PM biggest snake i got bit by was a 12ft burm it got away from a guy that worked at this herp shop with me and i had to catch it and i picked her up as she was pissing everywhere and she turned and grabed my right knee luck it was a bite and relese but still was lots of blood , and the best monitor bite was a great story i was working the san jose show for a friend of mine and there was a couple that was looking at the yellow monitor we had , he was only about 2ft long and really pritty so i pulled him out and leting him walk through my hands as i talked to the couple about the species and then bam he grabs my middle finger and starts head shaking haha and so instink kicks in and i let him go and he is hanging from my finger and still shaking so i pick him back up and call my friend helping my run the booth over to help me get this thing off me cuz it wouldnt let go haha needless to say theres blood everywhere and i got the monitor back in its cage and i looked up and that couple was freaking gone in a flash haha so i just grabed the nearest snake bag wraped up my finger in it and kept working lol finanly about a half hour later i went and washed up after to many people where asking what happened to my hand
Still new to these boards, and surfing through old posts and found this thread. I don't have any pictures, but have had my finger turned into hamburger by a nile, gotten nailed good by one of my adult male beardeds, and at one point or another by about every kind of lizard that we carry. From tokays to anoles they have been hanging off a finger or a hand. Even a pixie frog on more then one occassion! (He's now no longer for sale, he's MINE!) But without a doubt the worst pain, literally drop to my knees with tears rolling down my face was from a hermit crab! Caught me in the palm of my hand and took about 5 minutes to finally let go under water. Worst. Pain. Ever.
panhead 09-27-2009, 12:42 PM This is Sara, not Bruce, had to get onto his computer cuz he has a pic I wanted. Peter, one of our guys at work, was one of the employees that laughed like crazy at me for whining abouot the hermit crab pinch. This is a photo of one of his bites from awhile ago. Recently he also got a hermit crab stuck to his hand, and then changed his tune, was no longer funny and he agreed, worst pain ever. Man, did I let him have it!:lmao:

beclende 09-28-2009, 01:19 PM Nice ones Jeremy! It looks like you have a bunch of them that like to show you they care, lol.
Sarah......that looks like a bite I don't ever want to have happen...been bitten by adult bloods a few times...but they have never held on like that one, ouch!
BrucenBruce 09-28-2009, 06:08 PM My worst bite from a reptile was about a seven foot boa who tagged the back of my neck and the inside of my right ear while I was moving her from one cage to another.
The bite that left scars was from a fish. Let's just say it's not a great idea to wash tarpon slime off your arms in a shark tank, shall we?
~Bruce
Melanie 09-28-2009, 06:45 PM I've had a few tag-n-release hits from snakes but they barely stung, just a few droplets of blood... The worse pain was actually from my juvie beardie... I was hand feeding and he missed. He didn't realize it at first so he gave my palm a few good tugs before letting go! Honestly, didn't hurt much. But it was the worst... lol
Jeremy, good shots! The flying gecko looks fresh in, eh? The sliced finger... do you have tegus? That's kinda what mine seem to do, others leave heart shape or oval bite marks, tegus slice. Unless they get a good grip, then more of a crunch than a slice, haha!
And, Bruce is going to have to look, we have tons of shop bite pics, but am thinking that they may have been on the old computer that blew the hard drive. Shop policy when one gets bit is 1st get a picture, 2nd wait for it to decide you are not food, 3rd check it's mouth to make sure it's okay, 4th get laughed at by all the other employees! Then you may go wash and get the duct tape. Jeremy, you are sure you've never worked for bruce, right?? lol!

Tegus???May be a few around!
Had my fair share of bites.
Still get em and i wouldnt trade everything thats mean for anything else.
Worst hit i had was by my female croc monitor!!
Maybe 8 years ago???
7 staples,8 stitches on the muscle and popped a few arteries.
No pics, kinda went into shock with a 4 inch gap in the forarm.
Its weird laying in a hospital bed moving your fingers and watching the inside of your arm (muscles etc.) move and blood pours out when you do it!!
And your laughing because its all for the herps.:devil:
Did i get rid of her after that???Hellllllll no!
panhead 09-28-2009, 10:29 PM Just a bit of a story here. This does not involve a reptile bite but does involve a reptile. Some years ago I had a construction accident at the shop. I ended up breaking both wrists and my middle and ring finger on my right hand at the knuckle, totally blowing out of the sockets. Anyway after two weeks I went back to the shop. My large water monitor ( 6' +) decided to break out of his cage the day before I got back. Generally his temperment is pretty good but he was in a foul mood with wandering around the back room filled with various items. There was only myself and one of the girls I had working for me there. Anyway I figured I had to catch him and get him back in the cage. No one else was going to do it! So here I am with a hard cast & sling on my left arm, a soft cast on my right and both fingers splinted and taped trying to get this guy. After chasing him around, trying to get a towel over his head so I can pick him up and missing a few tail swipes as well as getting hit with a few I finally get close enough to try and cover his head. Just as i'm trying to get the towel over his head he whips that long hard tail & catches me SQUARELY across the knuckles of my broken fingers. I have had worse injuries but I have never been in more intense immediate pain. I just dropped to my knees, grabbed my hand and looked at it. There was nothing I could do for the pain. I couldn't scream, cry, yell or nothing. I was just in immediate pain & shock. I never, ever want to experience that again.

But better you then me.
The croc monitor one... OUCH!!!!! That is the ONE animal that had me telling Bruce nope, sorry babe! He was thinking about getting one in and I didn't actually tell him no, I just told him that they are my 'fraidy cat critter, I'll claim the "I'm just a little girl and can't do it" and for sure can't let any of our employees deal with it. Therefore he'd be the only one to clean, feed, and maintain it. And he does not have time for that. So... no croc monitor. I can freely take any crap at all about being scared of those, I'll admit it! (Obviously!) I just don't trust them, and they are sooo fast!
I have a tendency to adore the ones that bite me too, hence the pixie, lol! Most of my home pets aren't too bad, I do have one female crested that will not hesitate to bite, and had one big male leachie that was hell on wheels, but he got sold when I decided I had to cut down at least a couple of cages on glass poopers. My male blue tree monitor likes to act like he's going to, but has yet to follow thru, otherwise they both just shred your arms. That's something I should get a good pic of, man those claws dig in good!

My male blue tree monitor likes to act like he's going to, but has yet to follow thru, otherwise they both just shred your arms. That's something I should get a good pic of, man those claws dig in good!
Varanids dont have claws!!!The have talons!!:cheers:
Sorry about the claws...lol!:) I also use the word 'hairs' for the "flicky things that make you itch" from the tarantulas that do that. Actually got corrected by a customer once, I just let him know that the simple fact that I actually got it out so that they could see it was amazing in itself, let alone trying to stay cool and calm enough to remember to use the proper terminology! Not amongst my faves there...

bob-978 09-29-2009, 09:55 PM little woma bite...he thinks everything is food lol
Howard Redding 10-01-2009, 11:34 AM got tagged by a 9ft burm it didnt hurt as much as i thought it would.
got simply railed by a 8ft diamondxjungle carpet on the fleshy part of the thumb we just played the waiting game...and bled alot that was a nice bruise
but hands down most painfull was a 5ft northern racer to the upper lip
Howard... 9 ft burm? As well as the others, that sounds painful! I am a "lizard" person. I don't even like getting bit by a baby corn snake, lol! I got bit by one of my little niles today, first time for this batch. I had the cute little mouth shaped blood spots but I'll take that over ANY snake bite!
Howard Redding 10-02-2009, 06:58 AM many, many moons ago. the first day i got my nile he was on the back of my hand he
tilted his head, bit the knuckle skin, planted his talons and proceeded to shake.
yeah a few more bites and tail whips later and i had enough of that monkey-business
SNSnakes 10-02-2009, 10:47 AM Howard... 9 ft burm? As well as the others, that sounds painful! I am a "lizard" person. I don't even like getting bit by a baby corn snake, lol! No, I think I'd rather get bit by a snake than a lizard, especially any type of monitor! Lizards usually have MUCH stronger jaw muscles than snakes (of the same size) and when they clamp down, IT HURTS! I've had my female yellow ackie clamp down on a finger after she had a soak and I was trying to peel some stuck shed off her toes...that hurt! She didn't let go until I let her go first...lol. Most painful snake bite was from a female Bolivian boa about 5' long. She missed the rat I was dangling and hit my thumb/first finger knuckles, wrapped around my hand/forearm, and held on! That one bruised and bled for a while.
We've actually had this discussion at the shop more than once! "The Debate: What is worse to get bit by, a snake or a lizard?" I am about the only one there that goes with lizard, including monitors. However, the rest of them all favor the snakes as pets too, so I really think that it's a simple fact of preferring to get bit by an animal that you like more than one that you could take or leave. That's just my opinion though, anyone else can give their input!:)
SNSnakes 10-03-2009, 01:27 AM I think that the main difference is that a snake strikes, and either pulls back leaving you with a bunch of bleeding pinholes in your skin, or hangs on and clamps down, leaving you with the aforementioned bleeding pinholes, but now you have to pry it off. A lizard, especially a monitor (well, MY monitor) will bite, clamp down, start thrashing about, and will do it's damndest to tear off a piece of you...lol. All that thrashing about while needle sharp teeth are embedded in my flesh tends to sway my opinion over to lizard bites being worse.
Just a bit of a story here.
Bruce not to laugh at your pain but... BAAAAAAHAAHAA:lmao::lmao::lmao:
HulihZack 03-07-2010, 02:10 AM Bruce mentioned during the show tonight something about someone seeing a cage open with a three foot tegu in it and reaching in unknowingly. Well it reminded me of a little incident I had with a 3 foot tegu at my work (a reptile store).
This thing has an insane feeding response. As soon as he sees the keys to his cage, he's snapping at the glass. Once he's out, he's a big puppy. I didn't know, however, that that moment he goes back INTO the cage, it's right back to FEED ME mode. So one day I had him out to clean his cage, no issues there. Put him back in and turned my head to slide the glass shut and lock the cage. Well it took him about 3 seconds to turn around and clamp down on my left hand. Thank the gods he didn't thrash it like a rat! He held on for over a minute, every 10 seconds or so he would squeeze down SO HARD! He bit at an angle that, rather than breaking bones (which he easily could have done) he just scrunched my hand together HARD. That bite pressure would have probably taken a finger off. He left some puncture wounds that bled for 3 days straight, and the area within the bite was numb for over a month. Worst pain of my life, by far.
And you bet your arses we took pictures! :p
The night of, cleaned up a bit.

Yeow, Zach! Great pics, though.
Great pics Zack!!! It is amazing how fast tegus are, and so funny how they don't have that appearance. They seem bulkier and pretty still, and then just EXPLODE! And, looks like you got yourself and awesome bruise, betcha that lasted a good while!!
MagickalMorphs 03-07-2010, 10:19 AM Ouch. Lots of good stories in here, and I love the pics. I haven't gotten bit by anything impressive yet, but have the camera standing by for when it finally does happen. Just a few ball python snaps so far, don't even bleed much when you squeeze them up to try to get some gory bite shots to brag about.
Parrots though. My hands and arms are covered in scars. Gimme a snake bite any day over one of those.

:master::master::master: Parrots scare the heck out of me as far as bites!! I know people with permanent nerve damage from bird bites!
MagickalMorphs 03-07-2010, 11:26 AM Yep, I've got some of that. I've got a mealy amazon who crunches me every chance she gets. Thankfully she's not been able to get a full on beakful, or I'd have some broken bones.

OUCH! Chase (Bruce's older son) has a macaw that scared the heck out of me. She loved him and nobody else, and if she got out of her cage she'd chase me around, wings spread out, looking all fierce. Had to lock myself into the bathroom one time! (And she would LAUGH at me about it!!! Damn bird)

Dave79 03-07-2010, 12:26 PM Worst reptile bite was from a 14 foot albino labyrinth burm. She was on the top level of a 3 high Neodesha 8 foot rack. She was never aggressive until that day. I slid open the glass front and was standing on a stool and she bit me right on the neck right at my jaw line. Thank God she let go pretty quick. Also got 32 staples in my bicep breaking up a dog fight. And over 50 stitches to reattach my right middle finger and index finger breaking up another dog fight.
P.S. 2 of my dogs HATE each other

I've had males fight before and that's nothin. They usually snap and growl to act tough. But, the girls. They'll fight to the death.
AudraD 03-30-2010, 02:32 AM Wow, you guys have had some impressive herp bites!
I have no exciting herp bite stories but I did get bit by a lion once! :) I used to work with young lions and got a nasty bite on my hand once by our cranky little girl... It actually wasn't too damaging (I mean compared to what it could have been!) but it was scary because she wouldnot let go for the longest time. Having said that, the most traumatizing bite I ever got was from a hamster (it's okay, you can laugh). He also wouldn't let go and it actually hurt more perhaps because that pain was more localized?? (Plus I think it brought back repressed lion bite memories!!)
I hope I never have an exciting herp bite to talk about but if I do I'll totally take a picture! The photos that were posted are really cool :)

marvel69 09-01-2010, 02:48 PM About 15 years ago i got nailed by a 8 and half foot burm. Feeding response. He bit and wrapped took 3 of use 15 minutes to get him off my hand. I had 76 teeth holes 14 broke off in my hand because he kept chewing sinking his teeth in deeper. I had nerve damage in my index figer couldn't move it for over 6 months. worths part was it wasn't even my snake. I was watching it for a freind of a freind. Found out later he hadn't fed it in two months.
Chad Gray 09-01-2010, 07:10 PM Unfortunatley I dont have pics, but my worst bite ever was in 2004.
Large 5ft plus emerald tree boa and a bite in the throat.
Needless to say it was not fun, Ecspecially since I had to pry her off.
Holbeird 09-06-2010, 02:52 PM I've never got any really nasty reptile bites. A few from some big female ball pythons but nothing terrible. Now I used to be a manager at a Doggie Daycare and Boarding facility and I got some nasty bites there, the owners wife was a Vet though and usually she'd fix ya up. Couple friends thought it was weird but I figure if you can stitch up a dog you can stitch up a person. Worst was breaking up a massive 7 dog fight, the two main being A HUGE boxer (more like the size of a mastiff!) and an aussie, surprisingly the aussie was tearing the boxer up even though the boxer started it. Got a nasty tear on my hand from that one. Usually though when I was the one out in the field I could spot most fights before the started and separate them or kick one or both of the dogs out. Can't be everywhere though and ya can't rely on other people to read the clues before a fight breaks out.
As far as a dog going after me but the bite not being that bad. I had a fricken Dachshund that chased me around and got 4 or 5 good bites in before I climbed up on this structure we had in the small dog field and used my cell to have one of the girls come out and get him. (he had an issue with males) It wasn't the worst bite, but it was the worst in terms of the dog just being downright aggressive.
Ben_renick 09-06-2010, 03:06 PM While I haven't had any really "bad" bites, I've been tagged by some big Retics before, but the guy that helps me took a nice one from a male Retic when he was separating it from a female. It really refreshed two lessons for him #1 be more on guard with breeder male Retics, #2 don't ever jerk or let the snake jerk back while it's still attached. This was just a cell phone pic while he was getting stitched up, but it was pretty bad all the way around.

This is Gideon, our male burm. At the time he was about 6 ft. This bite was entirely my fault. He had just finished his first rat, and was looking for a second, but didn't see it drop to the bottom of his tub. He was coming up out of the tub and I tried to keep him in, while holding the lid just above him. He either keyed in on the heat or smell on my hand and the rest is obvious.
Way to go on grabbing the camera!!! Nice bite!
Holy crap Ben that's a bite!

We have a newer gal working for us that got her very first bite today. And she didn't bother with some silly little nothing bite, she managed to get tagged by Tinley, our sulpher water monitor. Now, Tinley's not nearly full grown yet, but she's not a little one either. She is 99% of the time a sweetheart of a girl, but right now she's digging and dropping eggs, so really NOT in the mood to be messed with. Sita wasn't really fully aware of the crankiness of a gal at a time like that and when she was doing her water she shoved her back like she normally would. This time Tins got a taste of a finger. Could have been much worse. The pics don't do the deepness justice. We offered to run her down and see about a couple stitches, but she "wants a cool scar to show off". I love her, lol!!!
Oh, and she did bleed ALOT, but I wanted to get it cleaned up so I could see how bad it was before I thought of the camera.. Sorry!

She's slugging out, so one here, one there kind of thing. And she did at least just give her a warning nip, could have been a heck of a lot worse, so I think that means she loves the new gal already!
Nor Cal Exotics 12-30-2010, 10:45 PM Hi all, just joined and this is my first post. Well I really don't have a bad bite, only been bitten twice and they were your common finger snap, lost of blood as usual but that's a given. I will give it up to my mother when i was in 6 grade, my mother brought home my first snake and it was so cool because I had no idea i was even getting a snake. well as we were trying to come up with some sort of enclosure for it (who brings home a tree boa with absolutely no enclosure????) she was bitten 9 times twice in the face! I will take you up on that offer... I got bit by a baby corn a few days ago... they are talking amputation of my cuticle... I dont how I will get through this without you cleaning all the cages and ordering me pizza bro....
Soooo, your saying there's a chance:wamma:
:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:
And hey Sput, while you're taking care of everyone else, I get bit all the time, want to come take care of all our stuff and order pizza for me too?

Sputnik 01-01-2011, 10:45 PM Sorry guys, but as quick as Bill Nelson doing a back flip on supporting us, I have to also say I'm out....
Took this life threatening bite from a damn rat while feeding them today.... didn't wanna leak royal blood all over the cages so I wrapped it in bounty paper and secured it with sticky tape to get them done....
I may not make it - oh dear, the room is spinning.... the lights are flashing, is that you momma?
Not gunna ma..............................
LOL!!!!! Actually I really shouldn't laugh, but I have to at the write up. BUT, rat bites hurt! Betcha you're still bleeding if it got ya good!

There were some words exchanged with the rat that can't be mentioned here.... it's damn lucky it produces a lot of babies!
bamasmith 01-02-2011, 12:14 AM I haven't seen a rat that couldn't be replaced..
Bigtattoo 01-02-2011, 07:28 AM When I had my shop a young guy brings in a 9' female Columbian red tail in a large laundry bag. He couldn't keep it anymore would I take it, I did. Since I wasn't expecting her I didn't have a cage all furnished but had a big one empty. I put her in and as I'm adding water bowl etc. she nails me good on the hand. A twist and pull bite. After a few kind words to her I remove a couple teeth and go to wash it and try to stop the bleeding. Hurt pretty good, bled even better and I was only mad because I didn't have any ink to rub in the bites for my snake bite tattoo.
A similar situation with a Sav monitor. Still setting up the cage and she grabs my thumb, starts to head shake so I lift her out by my thumb and tuck her under my other arm. She's still thrashing on my thumb, Tried the cold water. yeah right. Tried holding her head under water, no go. I had only rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. I was afraid to use the RA as it could be toxic. I remembered a tip from a varanid herper that peroxide worked well in these situations. I managed to get her down in a tub and was able to one handed fill a syringe with HP. Squirted that in her mouth and it starts foaming. She let go immediately. Hurt like the dickens for weeks, bled pretty good too.
Both of these turned out to be pretty sweet animals once they settled in.
I had a female breeder corn snake and a female Tarahumara king that both love to just bite and gnaw on me. No matter how I tried to go about it everytime I had to move them for cage cleaning they would have to have their gnaw fest on my flesh. They both quickly learned to crawl up a snake hook and bite. These girls were determined. :lmao: Kind of cute actually they thought they were so tough.
This was all before digicams so no pics. Herp bites are sissy stuff and come with the territory. I'll take a bite from almost any herp over hookbills and rodents. With the notable exceptions of "hots" and crocdilians for obvious reasons.
I've raised and kept lots of hook bills. Pressure bites from big Macaws and Cockatoos do hurt. The worst are the little ones. Budgies and Tiels seem to always find the most tender places to bite and they twist and gnaw.
Rodents bite to the bone everytime, hurt like the dickens for a good while usually in some tender area of the fingers or hand. No I don't think rodents are cute at all. Good for nothing but feeding reptiles IMHO.
Well, that was entertaining even without the pictures :D
Tia got nailed by one of the tics today. Not the same one that got Becca, a different one. Dang kids...lol!
Blood pics, and then rinsed off teeth row pics.

thanx for postin',

Tia is a trooper for sure! Was that a tic in the back room?
Tia is a trooper for sure! Was that a tic in the back room?
Nope, one of the for sale ones on the floor. Honestly usually not too bad, but does have a wicked feed response. She had the hook in her other hand but it nailed her before she even got it into the cage, she was just opening it... Oops! All well, learning experience, right? She IS a trooper!
Jlassiter 02-25-2011, 09:19 PM I have been bitten thousands of times by grumpy colubrids and a couple of times by a burmese and ball python.........but nothing has hurt as much as the bite I recently got by an adult male Abronia graminea..........He bit down on my hand and tried to make his teeth touch each other.......very powerful jaws for such a small lizard......LOL

LOL John! I still rather get bit by a lizard then a snake. Bites are almost always worse, but they aren't nearly as startling. And that's the part that gets me, is the "where did that come from" part, I hate that!:lmao::cheers:

Still think you should keep some india ink around the shop. Then when the kids get bit you can rub it into the bites and they can they have their badge of honor snake bite tattoo.:yes:

HPH2009 02-26-2011, 10:35 PM Ok Guys and Gals, I'll add my little experience...LOL. Didn't take any pics, because I really didn't want there to be any evidence, but I still bear the scar, I think Scott and Liz have seen it. Anyway, about two years ago, went to pet a 16' lavender albino retic that I've had for quite a few years. Now understand, I'd taken this animal to schools, churches, and quite a few expo's as an exhibition animal, and never had him make a move that would even remotely be considered aggressive. The kids crawl all over him, they love him to death.
So his cage is on the top of a stack of 4, 6' Visions, and he's coiled up right behind the door. So I slide the door open and go to stroke him on the back of his head, and all I remember was seeing his head flash, and thinking to myself, "Oh this is going to be bad". Well he grabbed my left forearm about 5" down from the elbow, full mouth, released a little, then bit down again. All I'm thinking at this time is don't jerk away or your going to lose the whole mouthfull. So he holds on for about 8-10 seconds, then starts throwing a neck loop over my wrist, and I'm thinking great, he's going to drag me into the cage, or break my arm, one or the other. But, right about that time, he let go, must've figured out I wasn't food I guess. But you want to talk about bleeding! I have a 30 gal. trash can in my snakeroom, and even squeezing at the elbow joint to try and slow the blood flow, within 60 seconds, I covered the lid to the can and it was running off onto the floor. Interestingly enough though, after cleaning it up, it wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. No trip to the hospital(yeah try and explain that one)and no stitches. Swelled up really bad, hurt like hell for about 2 weeks, and it took almost a year to get the feeling back in my left thumb and index finger. All in all, I consider myself very lucky that this is the worst bite I've had in 15 years of keeping large constrictors. And like anyone else that's had/has large constrictors, I've had more than my fair share of chances.
Still have him though, and haven't had an incident with him since. But I do have a lot more respect for him now. Personally, I think it was a tap on the shoulder from God, saying you're getting too complacent with these animals.:nono:
But enough novel, hope you enjoyed!
So the dreaded happened to me today... the bite that got not one but two fingers!! It tagged me good, blood all over, lucky I didn't have to go to the emergency room. But, like the tough ol broad I am, I sucked it up and stayed at work. It was hard I tell ya, and still did end up leaving a little bit early. Needed a drink by the time I got home just to stop the tremors. I think I was going in to shock.... I was able to hold still long enough to let Bruce snap a pic.

Funny too, the things you think while all that's goin' on isn't it? I'd really hate to be pulled into a 6 foot vision with a 16 foot retic  :lmao:. I'm also assumin' you didn't have any back up :nono:

Jenna09 06-28-2011, 11:45 AM This was a bite I got from a Black & White Argentine Tegu...was told he like to be scratched under the chin and apparently he didn't.
This is the offender
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u182/pickelweazel/IMG_0030-1.jpg
Took about 30-45 seconds to get him off and I was scared I was going to loose a finger (he had my index, middle and ring fingers in his mouth)...he kept clenching down and was getting a deeper bite with each movement. I started to panic and lifted my hand up which was a mistake but they were able to smack him on the head better to get him off that way.
I ended up with 3 stitches and a massive infection...my hand got so swollen the stitches started ripping my skin and I had to have them removed. His tooth actually went into my index fingers knuckle...lets just say there was a lot of blood and a lot of pain involved.
After it was cleaned and stitched up...before the fun swelling and infection set in.

Matt Edgar 06-29-2011, 01:02 AM My worst was from an Emerald tree boa. It was a younger animal and I had fed it. Thought it had ahold of the mouse so I wasn't paying attention and it nailed my hand. Got me right on the knuckle...it was swollen and bleeding immediately.
Kuipsnakes 06-29-2011, 03:06 PM My worst bite came from a German Shepard that has successfully taking down full grown cows!!!! I couldn't walk for a week...got me right behind the knee. However a buddy of mine has a terrible story lol. He traps snapping turtles to both sell and eat. One time he was carrying two 25+ pounders by the tails...one in each hand. One of them managed to lock onto his calf (wearing shorts!) Literally ripping a huge chunk from his leg. In the midst of freaking out about that...the other one got ahold of his other calf!!! Can you believe that lol!! He has two huge scars on each calf. Funny story, but man that must've hurt.

He was feeding them to fatten em up a little more :lmao:
Sputnik 06-29-2011, 04:58 PM Old ones.....
I marked them out, the larger one (about 2 inches long) is from a small gator about 22 years ago.... maybe 2ft long. Which was like sticking your hand into the jam of a car door as someone slams it shut.... although, most car doors don't have sharp little teeth.
I held my hand still when it latched on.... so as to not rip all the skin off, but didn't really matter, it decided to thrash anyway..... had some nice teeth hole punctures on the underside of my thumb where the meat is on the hand....
The small one is from a 5ft lace monitor 26 years ago. Got the skin of my fingers pinched in the side of it's mouth.... the 3 last fingers have scars, just didn't quite have a right hold on it at the time.... it wanted those fingers, but I wasn't about to give them up....lol
Old ones, so no blood, although there was some at the time....
CPTKirk 06-30-2011, 10:49 PM I have had so many bites...kinda prone to getting nailed. My worst bite was a 12 foot male retic that grabbed me in the ankle and wrapped my leg.I only have one picture of a decent bad bite happened in the same cage as jenna09s tegu bite. this time though it was my 4 foot female argus on my pinkie just a love bitemaybe held for 6 seconds.... I did not go get stiches but it took almost 3 weeks just to close...proably would have been a good idea but it has been almost 6 months after the fact and i still have nerve damage and if it touches or hits, bumps anything it is very very soar. and some what a little disfigured.

take care
kirk
Kirk, that mofo looks like it hurt
That looks like it might have smarted a little! LOL! Had to laugh at getting sliced by the water climbing up ya, that's how I base nail trims, I know they need one when just holding on brings blood!
CPTKirk 07-01-2011, 08:47 AM lol to be honest when it happened it was more of just a !@#$ then i almost think my body went into a sort of shock. i had a whole 1.5 hours of work left and finished it with paper towel wrapped around it.
I wish i had taken better pics becuase it really looks like a little bite but it was very very deep.
Sara i have never and never will trim nails on reptiles...that stuff is for mammals :P

Sara i have never and never will trim nails on reptiles...that stuff is for mammals :P
I always trim when needed. Probably comes from starting with bearded dragons, some of them will grow and curl to the point they lose the end of the toe if they are not maintained. And with the big monitors it just makes it easier on everybody, if you aren't flinching away from being stabbed and ripped by talons, it's easier for them to hold on and feel secure. With them it's real easy, just a quick dremel hit to take off the sharp tips.
Tokay geckos- check.
Boas(BCI) from neonates to 7ft/30+lbs-check
Leopard gecko- check
Bearded dragon- check
6ft albino burmese- check
woma python- check
adult male green iguana- check
red ackie- check
Snake wise it was a tie between the burm and the woma. Burm bit and instinctively I grabbed the head. That's when it coiled the other arm. Surprisingly (not to anyone who knows me personally) I was the calmest person in the pet store. Everyone else was freaking out over the blood or "what do I do, what do I do?"
The woma bit and coiled my thumb when moving it to a clean out cage. For a little noggin they have some long teeth in there. I could feel it on the bone! That was the hardest snake to get off. Did it again when I went to put it back not 10 minutes later!
Nile got me when I took her out of the tub for soaking. Oddly a smaller one did this to me recently. Something about removing a nile from the water tells them to bite first, figure it out by taste later. Happens every time. The big one bit me in between my thumb and pointer in that soft meat.
Worst one was my old 5ft iguana. Jumped off the shelf onto my face. Ripped the left nostril open. The bite was over 10 years ago and the scar is still there. Hands down I have to say a male iguana can shred some flesh like Dave Mustaine shreds a guitar. They'll bite and twist like a tokay and if they get a bite that doesn't have bone in the middle they can cut the skin clean off. The claws and tail never bothered me. After that the iguana would climb up your leg to bite the face if you didn't heed the threat displays. I didn't give in. Kept that iguana until it died 4 years later of a kidney infection.
quality serpents 07-02-2011, 12:13 AM Wow, this thread has been going on awhile. Very interesting one.
Sorry no pics. I had some on my Iphone, but I lost them in an update.
Non-venemous: 15 years ago 6 foot D'alberts python. Popped a tooth out while sitting in organic chemistry class 2 months later.
Venemous: 18 years ago copperhead bite to the middle finger of right hand. Only got me with one fang. Not too bad really. Just swelling
Spent 6 days in icu last october from western massasauga bite on the thumb of my right hand. This one was bad. I didn't get too excited until I lost my swallowing reflex and I heard the nurse say his blood pressure is 60 over 20. I got a little nauseous. Not a single lasting effect as far as I can tell, other than the hospital bill.
Shane
Wow Shane, I bet that was one humongous hospital bill! 6 days! ouch...from a cute little snake....(gotta watch out for the cute ones!)
quality serpents 07-02-2011, 10:01 AM Originally posted by kare: Wow Shane, I bet that was one humongous hospital bill!
That was really the only part that hurt. Nearly exactly $100,000. I had 3 doctors and 8 nurses and not 1 of them had ever treated a snakebite. They wouldn't listen to me. Ended up getting 18 units of crofab. Nearly killed me with the antivenin. If I find the appropriate forum, I'll post the whole story sometime.
Modean02 07-03-2011, 08:21 AM Worst ive had so far was a pop to the forehead from a 1000 gram female ball. But a few friends of mine used to have burms. One actually got pulled into the tub after the 9ft female norm missed the rat and pulled her down. The other reached in for cleaning day and actually got bit in the face from just under his left eye to the right side of his mouth. Twelve foot female albino and she left a tooth in his left cheek.

That guy has been a trapper/hunter/fisherman since he was in diapers lol. He's handled more snapping turtles than you can imagine. I'm not sure why he didn't "off" them right away...but I'm assuming he must have been wanting to keep them alive until he had time to take care of them? I dunno but each of his calves display scars just a bit smaller than tennis balls lol! Oh and the german shepard... No it is no longer alive......:machinegun:

Hubby got bit by our 5-foot 11lbs boa, "Pixie." She's a pretty new addition, & "hubby's snake." He definitely made a noob mistake when handling her, & he totally deserved it.
It wasn't as bad as I thought a boa bite would be. Was no worse then the bite from my corn. Was very surprised, actually. ~

ddodge 07-23-2011, 10:59 AM That was a friend's thumb, same day as the python bite I posted. He was complaining about swelling and an itchy feeling the next day.
Dan W 07-24-2011, 07:17 AM Ouch!.

OK, this is BY FAR not my worse bite, but it is my most current :D. Was playin' with the AFT's face and he got a grip on my finger. :lmao:
