What does everyone think about the black morter tub people are using for rats as a adult ball python tub?

Same concept as any other tub, except it would totally block out any light, so would probably really mess up the daylight cycle. If you could figure a way around that, then why not.

I use them for rats in screen top racks, never heard anyone using them for ball pythons.

They look great for rats. Id prefer a clear tub for snakes.

Freedom breeder style open air system?

Thought about it along time ago. They all thought I was off. But some of those big tubs could fit some large snakes.

I remember a post somewhere that someone used these and put little plexi windows in the front....wish I could remember where.

I believe Henry Piorun up here in Canada uses them for his adult balls. And if I remember correctly it is in a melamine style closed rack system, with no clear window in the front.

I might be completely off my rocker on this, but if you are trying to figure out how to simulate a day/night cycle in one of those types of tubs, you could try doing something with clear Christmas lights maybe? I have no idea HOW to make it work, but it might be something to fool with. And after the holiday season, you can get huge strings of those things for like a buck. Just have to figure out how to get the lights in the tubs and not have to worry about escapes and pulling the lights out when pulling out the tubs...

I think they will be fine with this open air system. I almost have a rack built and I won't be able to switch my females over to it until the spring after they lay eggs but by then I will have another rack built which will consist of 30 tubs with each level breaking down with open air system like freedom breeder. I am going to get a couple racks built so I can get a cheaper price on powder coating so they will all be done in the spring.

My problem right now is finding a hatchling - subadult tub

I remember we had thought about using the concrete tubs because they are nice and large. Like the freedom breeder (or is it ARS?) put the little plexi window in front so you can see what the little boogers are up to.

I'd say try it out, see what you come up with!

i think if you were dealing with wcs the black morter tubs would work awsome cuz they cant see whats goin on outide the tub which they will be less stressed and maybe feed sooner and do better.

Looks like I'm a little late to the party on this thread, but figured I'd throw my thoughts out there anyway. I really don't see these tubs being a problem with an open air system -- I know ARS offers opaque tubs for their racks and I think FB does also. It's really more of a keeper's choice than anything else. Give them more security, or get to see them before they try to take your face off as you open the tub.

The same thing I am thinking Kyle. Henry said the same thing his animals started feeding like crazy and breed better than ever in the tubs because it's solitude and stays dark. They can't see people walking by etc. etc. Also with the open air system it which allows them to smell the other girls better and food better when scenting the room (adam, larry talked about on the show) I think it's a huge win win situation.

I don't think so either I have racks being built for this and I will post pictures after they get out of the powder coating shop and they are finished.

you could put vision pannels in them

like little perspex windows

people here use plasteres baths whic are 4x2x1 for boa racks

they also use preformed pond liners and they just cut a hole out the front of the tub and cut a bit of perspex to fit and hey presto
